If Polis Akademisi were to proceed to the next stage of the Continental Cup, they needed to beat Barcelona with a seven goal margin. An insurmountable hurdle given they way the Catalans had played thus far.In the end they were defeated 13-1.
Polis was technically inferior team and tried to intimidate their opponents with a physical play. This tactics was selfdefeating as the Turks took too many penalties.
Barcelona didn't take any chances and closed the game quickly with three goals within the first 10 minutes. The first goal, scored by Mikael Boberg, followed an elementary line change mistake, while the second, scored by Didkovsky, was a lucky rebound goal. Didkovsky also scored the third goal at 11:50. In the rest of the period, Polis' goaltender, Levent Ozbaygudan played very well and made several spectacular saves, and he had little chance to make the save when Aleksandr Kosic put Barcelona four goals up with one second remaining of the period.
In the middle frame, Barcelona picked up where they had left off in the first period as the topline with Didkovsky-Munoz-Kosic scored the fifth goal (another powerplay goal) after 54 Seconds. From that on, the game turned ugly when Gurkan Cetinkaya punched down defenseman Miguel Arnau with the puck miles apart. Arnau remained down on the ice for several minutes and the Turk received a major. Five minutes later a major fight broke out and two players from each team were send to the penalty box. At 33:43, Didkovsky zealed his hattrick with a short-handed goal. When the players went to the dressing room after the second period, the Catalans provoked the Turks by pointing to the scoreboard. This led to another fight as Karakoc and Nieto transformed the ice rink to a boxing ring.
Though Polis got a goal with 5 minutes remaining of the game, in the third period, they seemed to be more anxious continuing their tough play. Definitely not a great show, but they were allowed to do so as the referees showed way too much tolerance. Meanwhile, Barcelona scored seven times for a 13-1 win that ended the Catalan's perfect campaign in Ankara.
For the first time in history, Barcelona advanced to the second round of the Continental Cup. The team will travel to Miercurea Ciuc, Romania and face stronger adversaries, namely SC Miercurea (ROM), Upjest Budapest (HUN) and HYS the Hague (NED).
