The Belarus Cup started on Wednesday. In previous years, hockey clubs have asserted their dominance by winning the Cup every year the tournament has been played in the preseason.
The 8th edition of the Belarus Cup started 5 August. The Cup tournament which was launched in 2002 has traditionally taken place in the pre-season.Hockey clubs of Minsk have won the cup every year with the exception of 2003 and 2004 when the title went to Gomel.Curiously, 2003 and 2004 were the only years when the Cup was played in the post-season (April/May). Last year, Keramin won the Cup after a thrilling 6-5 victory over Yunost.

Over the last few years, the Cup tournament has been added extra spice as the fans have had an opportunity to watch their NHL stars, Mikhail Grabovsky and the Kostitsyn brothers who were preparing for the NHL season with their native clubs.This has become a thing of the past as the rules of the tournament now only allows players who have a valid contract with Belarussian clubs.
Format
The format of the Belarus Cup is simple: the teams are divided into two groups which play a round-robin. The winners of the two groups advance to the final.
