The second day of the 2009 Ivan Hlinka Memorial led to four expected victories. The OHL forward line with John McFarland, Tyler Toffoli and Tyler Seguin once again made the difference when Canada beat Switzerland 6-3 in Group A. The line that combined for 7 points in Canada's over Sweden today produced a combined six points. Canadian coach Bob Boughner lauded the trio for its offensive creativity, going so far as to suggest that the team's gold-medal chances hinge on how well the line performs the rest of the way.
In the other game in Group A, Sweden skated to a deserved 4-1 victory over the host, Czech Republic. Sweden dominated the game from the outset and took the lead after 12 minutes when Gabriel Landeskog found a gap in the upper left corner behind Mrazkov. Five minutes later, the Czechs got the equalizer when David Krejci scored on a shot from the blue line on a pass from Valenta. Midway into the second frame, Adam Larsson converted on the powerplay. In the rest of the period, the Swedes exploited the nervousness of the Czechs play by scoring another two powerplay goals that added assurance to the victory.
In Group B, Russia stunned Slovakia by scoring three goals within the first 7 minutes, and another goal after 17" min to take a healthy 4-0 lead after the 1st period. Slovakia played a more balanced game the rest of the game, but could prevent a well-balanced Russian team from winning 7-1. In the other game in Group B, USA beat Finland 3-2. The game was decided late in the third period when Charlie Coyle, while on the breakaway, was awarded a penalty shot after being slashed by Finland's Arousva. On the goal, Coyle made a move to his backhand that brought Finnish netminder Sami Aittokakkio out of the net before cutting across to his forehand and slipping the puck into the open net.
The results mean that Canada and Russia, leading their groups with maximum points, are in the pole position of reaching the final on Sunday. In the final round of the group stage, Canada faces Czech Republic while Russia meets Finland.
