Hopes still alive

Polis Akademisi easily beat Herzliya and kept their hopes alive advancing to the next stage in the Continental Cup

The host Polis Akademisi and Israeli champion Herzliya opened the second day of the Continental Cup in Ankara. Polis wanted to avenge yesterday's disappointing loss to Slavia, while Herzliya, which were hammered by Barcelona, went on the ice to do better and prove that the players weren't on vacation.

While the young Israeli squad were quickly outpowered by the older and more physical Turkish players who prevailed in nearly all checks, Herzliya played a better tactical game than yesterday. In the first 15 minutes of the game, Herzliya sustained the Turkish pressure and managed to make some sticky counterattacks by the fast forward, Treibochan. Polis' goaltender, Levent Ozbayduğan, however, remained on his guard.

After some scruffling behind the Israeli cage, Erdogan Coskun finally found the net at 15:07. Polis capitalized on the momentum by adding another two quick goals within two minutes. Polis' second goal was scored by Tasdemir Gokturk on a one time and the third goal by the Ukrainian forward Dmitri Rudenko on a individual effort.

In the second period, Polis took a 4-0 lead (another goal by Rudenko) after 6 minutes. The Turkish team then slowed down for 10 minutes before adding two more goals by Can Karabey and captain Ozan Guven before the end of the period. In the second period, Herzliya didn't manage a single shot on the Turkish goal.

Both teams changed goalies before the third period. After Cargi Karabult had extended Polis' lead to 7-0 at 43:21, the Turkish team slowed down and allowed Herzliya into the game. At 53:46, Herzliya finally entered the scoreboard when Artiom Korotkin found the net on an assist from Dima Rozenman. Dima Rozenman, one of the few senior players on the Israeli team, added another one only 24 seconds later. At 57:20 Dmitri Rudenko sealed his notable performance by completing his hattrick.

Final score: 8-2, and the Turks' hopes for advancing to the next stage are still alive.

Internationalhockey MVP are: Dmitri Rudenko and Artem Korotkin
