CHINESE ICE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP 2009
Despite the support from various NHL franchises, Chinese ice hockey is in a sorry state of affairs. There are essentially only two competitive teams, namely Qiqihar and Harbin. This reflects upon the slightly complicated format for the Chinese national championship that took place in March-April this year: There two groups with each three teams. The best three teams, Qiqihar, harbin and Jiamusi, are placed in Group A. The winner and runner-up of this group will qualify for teh final of the championship, while #3 will play for the bronze against the winner of group B. Group B includes Qiqihar and Harbin's B-teams and Qianwei Sports Association.
Qiqihar defended its title by beating Harbin 6-4 in the final. Qiqihar also won the U20 championship by beating Harbin 3-2. This was indeed the only U20 game this season. Qiqihar completed its hattrick by also winning the U18 championship where four teams contested.
