In the opening game of the IIHF Continental Cup's second day in Krakow, Poland, Kazakh club Sary Arka Karaganda skated to a 4-1 victory over eternal Lithuanian champion Energija Elektrenai. Sary Arka's level was well above that of the rebuilding Energija - Elektrenai, due to budget problems, is icing a team this season that is roughly 50% U-20 players, and the top veterans have all left the team. Given the opposition, Sary Arka played as if their minds were still on yesterday's loss to Cracovia, and they couldn't truly be satisfied with their win. Karaganda did, however, outshoot Elektrenai by a 50-16 margin for the game.
Energija's failure to even get a shot on goal during a four minute powerplay in the first period was representative of the minimal opposition they provided to Sary Arka. Sary Arka's goaltender Grigori Fedchenko had a relatively easy evening.
Sary Arka dominated Energija in the first period in terms of territorial advantage, carrying the play and outshooting the Lithuanians 17-5. Despite that edge, the score was only 1-0 for the Kazakhs at the intermission after a power play goal by Eldar Nazhmutdinov at 06:46. Energija goaltender Nerijus Dauksevicius played well. Energija did have a great chance at 13:50, when Rolandas Aliukonis hit the crossbar.
The second period saw similar Sary Arka dominance, and the lead was stretched to 3-0 heading onto the third period. The Kazakh goals came at 24:24 by Aleksei Zotkin finishing a Vladimir Ivantsov move, and at 37:45 by captain Ramil Sayfullin with a easy touch after a long Eldar Nazhmutdinov puck possession - and a post hit by Aleksandr Korobolin. The middle period also saw Energija player Vytautas Jagelavicius suffer a face injury and not return, although he supposedly will play tomorrow with a special mask. Energija did not threaten the Sary Arka cage in the second period.
In the third period, Sary Arka poured on the shots, but only produced two hit goalposts (by Filin and Kokorev) and a single goal by Rastam Yessikrenov at 52:15. Energija finally replied 20 seconds later, breaking Fedchenko's shutout bid with a goal by Anton Korneiciuk. Before the final siren was the best moment of the match: a spectacular Fedchenko dive to stop a threat by Energija's Aliukonis.
After the game the Sary Arka coach was satisfied: “We played very well and aggressively, pity we didn't show this character yesterday, but we still have chances.” Energija's coach stated that “This loss isn't dramatic; we are missing 3 strong players, and for our junior players this level is simply too high. We played against a stronger team, no doubt and I'm satisfied especially with our 3rd period. I think that the referees were too severe with us, but the game was a useful lesson for us.”

On the second day of the IIHF Continental Cup in Krakow, Poland, home side Cracovia Krakow needed 10 minutes and 49 seconds to blow open the match and slam the door against the Estonian league representative, and assure advancement to the next round of the tournament. Cracovia jumped to an early 4-1 first period lead over a willing but overmatched Kalev-Valk Tartu, and routed the guests by a final score of 9-3. The home team was once again supported by loud, passionate fans, who provided for a great atmosphere.
The Laszkiewicz family was decisive in sending Cracovia to the Continental Cup semifinals: yesterday, 2 goals from Leszek defeated Sary Arka, while tonight, older brother Daniel provided a hat trick against Tartu to stamp the match as his own.
The Estonian club was able to wash out Gregorz Pasiut's early opening goal for Cracovia with a power play shot by Vasili Titarenko at 4:50, but was unable to fight back from the Cracovia reaction: three goals in four minutes, with Daniel Laszkiewicz, Nikolaj Lopuski and Mariusz Duleba all scoring, despite the many brilliant saves made by Tartu goaltender Kristjan Eerme.
The Cracovia power play worked particularly well in the first period, scoring twice in three opportunities.
In the second period, the home side controlled the game and opened the scoring at 23:13 with a goal from Sebastian Biela. Vasili Titarenko again found the back of the net for Kalev-Valk only one minute later, but Cracovia's dominance continued at the 30 minute mark with two goals - at 30:01 by David Musial, and at 30:55 by Daniel Laszkiewicz. Kalev-Valk fought hard, but its style of play is (compared to Cracovia and Sary Arka) quite elementary, with only Vasili Titarenko and Ivan Loginov seeming to be players able to compete for the Estonians at this level. The score was 7-2 for the Poles heading into the final period.
The third period was simply a celebration, with Cracovia's fans in ecstasy and the team trying to show good hockey. The first Polish line was again lethal after only 38 seconds, with fan favorite Leszek Laszkiewicz scoring. Maksim Semjonov scored at 47:28 for Kalev-Valk before Daniel Laszkiewicz's third goal of the game at 51:03 provided the final margin for Cracovia.
In the post-game press conference, Kalev-Valk coach Ismo Lehkonen credited his team's opponents: “Cracovia is a skilled team, they put pressure on us for 60 minutes, and the result is correct. It was a great experience for me and the guys to play in this atmosphere; the Polish fans are great!” Krakow coach Rudolf Rohacek was obviously happy: “I'm pleased with the team; we started to play well from the first period and continued with a high standard until the end. Tomorrow night we'll celebrate with the fans, but now I want to concentrate on the last match."
