IHWC 2009 Preps: Germany get historic win over Denmark

Germany beat Denmark 7-2 in the two nations' last preparation game before the 2009 IIHF World Championship. The victory was historic as Germany have never beaten Denmark with a margin of five or more goals.

Germany beat Denmark 7-2 in the two nations' last preparation game before the 2009 IIHF World Championship. The victory was historic as Germany have never beaten Denmark with a margin of five or more goals. Despite being neighbouring countries, the two nations haven't played eachother very often - at least until recently. The first game took place 10 years ago on 12 April 1999 at the B-pool World Championships. Denmark sensationally won that game 6-1. It thus took Germany ten years to even that loss margin.

The game was quite close in the first period but became uneven when Michael Wolf gave Germany the lead after only 10 seconds. Germany then beseiged the Danish defense-zone and scored two goals within only 7 seconds midway in the period. Early in the third period, Denmark took another hit when Mikkel Bødker and Kasper Pedersen received penalties shortly after another. Michael Wolf converted on the powerplay only 10 seconds after the Danish box was reduced to three men. From then on, the game was effectively over. Danmark's defence ace, Philip Larsen was spared the most of the game and only received ice time on the powerplay. He assisted on both Denmark's goals. After the game, Germany's final IHWC roster was announced.
