Elitserien Season 2008-09 Review

Färjestad made a stellar performance in the last third of this season, winning both the regular season and the championship. But the season was long and there were several other championship candidates as well.

Brynäs, by most experts predicted in the bottom of the league table, started the season best and held the top position in the early part of the season with 8 wins in the first 10 rounds.

They were later passed by Linköping, who managed to hold on to the top position for the best part of season. A season that has to be one of the closest ever in Elitserien, with only 10 points separating Linköping in first place and Timrå in tenth after 30 rounds.

Towards the end of the regular season Färjestad was steaming on while Linköping was beginning to struggle. With three weeks left of the regular season Färjestad sailed into first place and ended up winning the regular season by a 7 point margin to runners-up Linköping.

The bottom four
For Modo and Djurgården the season ended in late February as they managed to avoid the relegation threat in Kvalserien but not secure a place in the playoffs. Rögle and last placed Södertälje had to fight for their place in Elitserien next season, and in the end they were both too strong for the hopeful teams from HockeyAllsvenskan.

Quarterfinals
Brynäs, Luleå, Timrå and Linköping lost their respective quarter finals. Early season top team Brynäs didn't scare Färjestad's defense, only managing two goals in four games. Regular season runners-up Linköping was somewhat surprisingly ousted by Skellefteå losing the seventh game in the third over time period. Timrå's and Luleå's departures was more expected, even if it took seven games for HV71 to defeat Timrå.

Semifinals
Skellefteå had even more trouble than Brynäs to penetrate the solid Färjestad defense, with Färjestad's goaltender Jonas Gustavsson managing three shut-outs in a row. In the fourth game Skellefteå finally broke Gustavsson's fantastic spell, but it was too late and Färjestad was through to the final. Frölunda and HV71 exchanged blows for a couple of games but Frölunda looked like they had the edge, and when they led the series 2-1 and faced two home games many thought that everything was settled. HV71 managed three straight wins however and earned their spot in the finals.

Finals
Färjestads' quick disposal of Brynäs and Skellefteå had expectations in Karlstad running high, but what could HV71 do. They had struggled in the quarter-finals and turned the series around in the semi-finals, did they have the snipers that could throw Färjestad's defense off their game? After the first game it sure looked like it with HV71 scoring 4 goals, as many as Färjestad had conceided in total in the playoffs so far. However that turned out to be only a glitch in Färjestad's finely tuned machinery, and they won the next four games. This was Färjestad's seventh final and third championship since 2000, a true power house in Swedish hockey. They went 12 wins to 1 loss in this playoff, and noone can deny that they are worthy champions.
