USA looked pale four days ago when they played their one and only exhibition game and lost 2-5 to Switzerland. In their opening game against Latvia, USA  won deservedly 4-2. "We made some mistakes and they capitalized on them," said Latvia's Karlis Skrastins.  "They’ve just been together for a few days, but they had more speed and power."
Latvia beat USA in the 1998 IHWC in Switzerland and continued their good run with a tie in the 2000 IHWC and a 2-0 victory in the 2001 IHWC. Since then, USA have remained unbeaten in six consecutive games. The results between the two nations have  always been close, and despite USA dominated the game, the result tonight was no exception. USA and Latvia have played 11 times since 1938 and notwithstanding USA's 4-0 win in Halifax last year, no team has ever won with a margin of more  than two goals.

Austria's dreams of a glorious return to the World Championship were quickly killed when Linus Omark set up three helpers to give Sweden 3-0 lead after 13 minutes. A sleepy second period was momentarily awakened with Oraze's booming slapshot goal in the 32. minute. Austria sensed the morning air but didn't managed to get closer. In the third period, Tre Kronor turned on the heat. Weinhandl scored twice, Mårtensson assisted on three, and Linus Omark turned up his score to 5 assist and within 10 minutes, Sweden were up 7-1. Sweden remain unbeaten against Austria for 50 years now. However, Austria's 2-1 win in the 1949 Stockholm IHWC is a loss that Sweden will never forget.

After the tight game the teams played in the IHWC last year many expected Norway to give Finland a run for their money. However Finland was on their A game right from the start of the game scoring three powerplay goals in the first period (100 % conversion) and hitting the post twice. The second period started with Norway facing almost two minutes of two man deficit but this time Finland's power play didn't have the needed vigour. After the penalty kill Norway got slightly better into the game but Pekka Rinne in the Finnish goal took the needed saves and after a clear shift error by the Norwegians Mika Pyörälä scored the only even strength goal of the game making it 4-0. In the beginning of the third period Finland added another powerplay goal and the only thing left unsure was if Pekka Rinne could get a shutout in his first NT game on any level. It turned out that he could though it took a bit of luck and some great saves since Norway got some nice scoring chances after the Finns slightly relaxed towards the end of the game.

Denmark played well 5-on-5, but suffered the same faith as Norway as the Czech Republic scored four powerplay goals in a 5-0 win. The game remained tight until halfway in the game. In the last 10 minutes of the 2nd period, Denmark received three penalties and in that timespan, Czech Republic were perfect on the powerplay mimicking Finland's performance vs. Norway in the 1st period in the afternoon game in group D. Jagr and Cajanek each combined for 1 goal and 2 assists while  Hemsky made 1 goal and an assist. "We played well five-on-five," Danish forward Mikkel Boedker said, "but when they have those skilled players  like Hemsky and Jagr, they can set up the power play really well."
Like Pekka Rinne, Jakub Stepanek got a shutout in his IHWC debut.  This was only the second game between the two nations in history. In the 2008 IHWC, Czech Republic won 5-2.
