USA scored three times in less than four minutes in the middle of the second period. That and solid goaltending was enough to win the quarterfinal against Finland.

Finland completely dominated the first period in the quarter-final against USA, firing an impressive 20 shots on excellent Robert Esche in the US goal. The US defense looked sluggish, and the speedy Finnish forwards was able skate circles around the US defensive zone. The closest Finland came to a goal in the first period however was a shot to the bar.
The second period opened with a Finnish power play that Niko Kapanen capitalized on, after catching a rebound of Esche's pads. The following five minutes was dominated by Finland and a second Finnish goal seemed almost certain. A string of Finnish penalties turned the tide when USA got the opportunity to play for a minute and a half with a two man advantage. The equalizer came after a beautiful play that left US team captain Dustin Brown with an empty net and he had no trouble putting the puck behind Finnish goaltender Pekka Rinne.
This gave the US players a much needed injection of self-confidence and when Finland twice lost the puck on the blue line USA scored two goals that Rinne could do little to prevent. USA kept up it's energetic play and when another Finnish penalty was called they were only inches away from scoring a fourth goal to seal the game. Instead, Hannes Hyvönen came from the penalty box and scored on a rebound.
The third period was one long uphill battle for Finland who did not manage to get back to the quality of play from the start of the game. USA concentrated on keeping a tight defense and the third period ended scoreless, giving USA a ticket to the semi-final against Russia. |
