Finally a new season is about to start. This year there are three new teams in HockeyAllsvenskan:

Djurgården was relegated from Elitserien last year, Rögle taking the step up in the league hierarchy. They are a mainstay of Swedish hockey since time immemorial and are looking for a quick return. Will they take the step? They have a good chance, especially if they are reinforced with locked out NHL players with a Djurgården background.

Karlskrona was promoted from Division 1 last year, with Sundsvall being forced to step down. This is a very young club, formed only 11 years ago, but has rocketed through the divisions and averaged almost 3,000 spectators last year in division 1.

Asplöven won promotion as Borås was relegated on financial grounds. Based in Haparanda, right on the Finnish border, they have a staggering 915 km to their nearest opponent. Widely regarded as underdogs, they had a late start in signing players and their arena only takes 600 spectators. An uphill battle indeed.

Regarding locked-out NHL players, I know Elitserien won't allow short-term or temporary contracts to locked out players, but media here was reporting that those rules also apply to lower divisions in Sweden. Is that false then, and can Allsvenskan teams sign NHLers temporarily?

During the season startup press meet a week ago it was announced that HockeyAllsvenskan would follow Elitserien in not allowing short-term contracts for locked-out NHL players. The decision was definitely not unanimous and hotly contested by some clubs.

Yesterday a new statement was issued, reversing that decision and opening up for NHL players to play even if the lock-out is not for the full season. This decision too is highly controversial with Malmö's coach likening it to "peeing in the pants", i.e. nice and warm in the short term, not so in the long run. (Aftonbladet (http://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/hockey/sverige/allsvenskan/malmo/article15423726.ab)).

Some teams have already been in contact with players:

Mora has contacted Anze Kopitar, as his brother Gaspar is already in the team.
Djurgården is talking to Erik Karlsson from Ottawa.
Tingsryd is in contact with Oliver Ekman-Larsson from Phoenix, rumours says taht he has stated that he will play for free.

There seems to be a general consensus on the top teams this year. Almost all predictions have Leksand, Djurgården, Örebro and Södertälje in the top four places. The exception is Hockeysverige.se who has Södertälje down in 7th and Oskarshamn in 4th.

There is an equal consensus for the bottom three teams, all predictions but one has Almtuna, Tingsryd and Asplöven at the bottom. The exception here is DN.se with Almtuna in 9th and Karlskrona in 12th.

Personally I expect Djurgården to be in the top spot, they have managed to build a strong team despite being relegated. Leksand is a close second, with most of the team the same as last season with only three additions. Behind them I would group Örebro, Södertälje, Västerås and BIK Karlskoga as the main contenders for the 3rd place and the first playoff positions.

Malmö, Troja/Ljungby, Oskarshamn and Mora will probably fight for the last playoff spot, perhaps with an edge for Malmö if they can pull the team together after the financial catastrophe they just endured.

Karlskrona, Tingsryd, Almtuna and Asplöven will probably have to fight off the relegation ghost...

It seems there are more former Elitserien teams in Allsvenskan than I can ever remember before.

Don't know what this means, if anything, but something I certainly noticed.

This is obviously a very good league, and arguably one of the ten best in Europe. So my question is what kind of TV, radio & newspaper coverage it gets in Sweden compared to Elitserien and overall in terms of Swedish sporting culture.

Too bad... I realize that Jesenice is gone, but I still would have liked to see him in a Slovenian club (namely Olimpija). Still, the brothers together should be mighty interesting

The interest for HockeyAllsvenskan has increased tremendously since they went from two geographical divisions (North/South) to one nation-wide league back in 2005/06. The last couple of seasons it has also seen good TV coverage with 27 of the 48 games played this September either broadcast or streamed.

Viasat has the TV rights and will broadcast 125 games this season, most on their Viasat Hockey channel. S24 does webcasts and starting this season hockeyallsvenskan.se will also broadcast some of the games.

The TV deal is not as lucrative as for Elitserien, Djurgården who was demoted this year reportedly lost 20-25 MSEK on that.

Football (soccer) is the biggest sport media wise in Sweden, but once the football season is over (in October), Hockeyallsvenskan is a clear second to Elitserien, ahead of other winter sports like handball, basket or skiing.

Douglas Murray (http://eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=2616) and Patric Hörnqvist (http://eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=3683) are both reportedly close to signing with Djurgården.

Both will play for no salary, with Djurgården paying for insurance only.

The same deal is made with Patrik Berglund (http://eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=3637) in Västerås.

After five rounds Troja/Ljungby is leading the series and they have certainly started the season in stellar fashion. Not generally believed to be a top team they have played entertaining hockey and it will be interesting to see if they can keep the form going.

If not many believed Troja/Ljungby would be at the top of the table after five rounds, even fewer expected to find just relegated Djurgården in 10th place. Not the start the erstwhile Elitserien team expected, but I expect they will find their pace soon enough.

If anyone gets a chance to see British international Robert Dowd, I'd be very curious to hear what your impressions of how he played are. I see statistically he's doing well through the first 7 or 8 games of the season.

8 games in he has 2 goals and 3 assists so 5 points in 8. Not the worst start. His Elite League and EPL records and very good indeed! Hopefully he can be successful in Sweden

Really happy that Rob has got his career over in Sweden off to a good start. If he can have a good year at such a high level of hockey that is played in the Allsvenskan it could be a great thing for British Hockey and it might encourage other Brits to try their hand in leagues abroad.

The top of the league table after four rounds is really tight with 4 teams at 21 points. The biggest positive surprises so far are Oskarshamn and Troja/Ljungby who both have played speedy and fun-to-watch ice hockey.

The negative surprises are Djurgården and Södertälje. Both teams were expected to be found in the top 4-5 places at least.

Interesting start to the season. I'm pleased to see that Asploven look like they will be competitive at least.

I was looking on the Swehockey website at the schedule and it said that Mora were playing Leksands at the Ericsson Globe on 5th January. Is that correct? Is their a special reason why the game is being played there?

I see the Brynas are playing Timra in an outdoor game in December. I know that Timra/Sundsvall isnt that far from Gavle but I didnt think it was a particularly big rivalry? I guess with Leksand and Djurgardens in Allsvenskan they think that Timra is the best option? Are Brynas doing the same thing that Leksands did for their outdoor game with Mora and building a temporary arena from scratch? I hope that the game is a success a draws a big crowd. It did make me think that a Brynas-Leksands outdoor game would be able to attract a very large attendence (much bigger than Brynas-Timra?) and would be a great event to go to.

Final question, is anything happening with a new arena in Uppsala for Almtuna to play in? The last time I was in Uppsala (c.3 years ago) I heard plans about this but nothing seems to have happened as far as I know.

No special reason except as a publicity stunt. There are a lot of people from both Leksand and Mora living in Stockholm, and they expect to sell out the Globe Arena with 13,850 seats.

Timrå is 220km from Gävle (Brynäs), where Leksand is 160km away. Brynäs is celebrating 100 years this year and the outdoor game will be part of this celebration. They are building a temporary arena from scratch, very much like the one built in Leksand (in fact I would not be surprised if it is the same).

The decision in Uppsala to go ahead and build the Uppsala Arena in a private-public partnership was appealed on the grounds that it would constitute unlawful state aid to private enterprises. As of now the EU commission has still not made a decision, pushing the plans even further into the future. Current plans are to have the arena completed in early 2015, but even that date is now in question.

Thanks for the information. I knew that Leksand had a lot of fans in the Stockholm area but didnt know that Mora were as popular. I guess its a good way to promote both clubs and the league but I think I would be a bit annoyed if I lived in Dalarna and had to travel down to Stockholm to go the game. Has the derby being selling out in recent seasons? Djurgardens-Leksand games are still being played at Hovet though right? I would have thought those would get moved to the Globe instead.

With the exception of Djurgården and to some degree Malmö, the teams at the top of the league table are the teams predicted to be there. Leksand and Karlskoga has pulled away somewhat while Oskarshamn and Örebro has lost a little ground in the last five games. Djurgården looked like they were going to climb to the top after being joined by NHL-lockout player Gabriel Landeskog. But after two close losses they have fallen back in the table again.

At the bottom of the table we find the two newcomers who have been struggling with the pace in HockeyAllsvenskan.

Leksand holds on to the lead with Karlskoga and Västerås trailing, just like 5 rounds ago. The gap between 3rd and 4th has widened but it is still rather tight, only 11 pts differ between first and eighth place. Södertälje continues to climb and has now pushed Oskarshamn out of the top 7.

A little more than one third into the regular season, Djurgården continues to struggle despite having three locked out NHL players on their roster. Speculations are starting on how long the former Djurgården star Charles Berglund (http://www.eliteprospects.com/staff.php?staff=157) will stay head coach.

At the very bottom, newcomers Asplöven has changed places with Almtuna and now has the same number of points as Tingsryd. Karlskrona is trailing more and more but the fight to avoid 13th place is tight.

Södertälje (http://www.sodertaljesk.se/default.asp) has signed Cam Fowler (http://www.eliteprospects.com/player=31261) from Anaheim and Nicklas Grossman (http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=2439) from Philadelphia.

Grossman will play four games. His future in the club after these games is uncertain. Södertälje can´t afford to pay his insurance. For the moment Grossman pays his insurance himeself and plays for free.

The signing of Fowler is a result of the fans commitment. They managed to gather some 375000 swedish kronor in two days (about 35000 euros) to help the club to sign the young defender.

Nothing much has changed in the top or the bottom of the standings in the last five games. Leksand, Karlskoga and Västerås still occupy the top three positions. Asplöven, Almtuna and Tingsryd still struggle to avoid joining Karlskrona in the bottom two positions that lead to the requalification series in spring.

In the middle however there have been some movement. Örebro has dropped from 4th to 7th and Troja/Ljungby from 6th to 10th. In the other direction the biggest mover is Malmö moving from 9th to 5th. Södertälje is now up in 4th place after a strong showing and has closed the gap to the top 3.

Djurgården has changed their head coach and saw some good wins in the first games after the switch, but they still haven't moved up much. To add insult to injury they will soon have to manage without their three NHL lockout players Douglas Murray, Gabriel Landeskog and Patric Hörnqvist.

Leksands IF today announced (http://www.leksandsif.se/p/news/20121212/leksand-hockey-inleder-rekonstruktion-for-att-skapa-en-stabil-ekonomi/8372) that they are entering a debt restructuring ("rekonstruktion") in order to try and build a better economy for the future. The creditors are asked to agree to a 75% reduction in the debts, amounting to a total of SEK 50mio.

Along with other cutbacks and increased revenue the result is expected to improve by SEK 15mio per year.

Last season both Malmö and Borås went through debt restructuring. Borås was later denied a new elite license for Hockeyallsvenskan on financial grounds.

The top four teams are the same as last time, with Södertälje trying to break into top three. Karlskoga has taken over the lead from Leksand, helped by a big 9-0 win against Troja/Ljungby.

Djurgården has finally managed to climb up into the playoff spots but it is a tight race with just five points separating Malmö in 5th place from Mora in 9th.

Troja/Ljungby is stick in a bit of no-mans land whhile Asplöven and Tingsryd are trying to pull away from Almtuna, currently holding that dreaded 13th place. Karlskrona in the very bottom continues to lose ground and is now 14 points away from solid ground (aka 12th place).

Södertälje has worked its way into the top three positions, passing Västerås and closing in on Leksand and Karlskoga at the top of the table.

In 5th place, Djurgården is in very good form and is inching its way closer to the top teams. The margin down to 8th place is now 7pts, and the way Djurgården is currently playing, it looks like they are moving up. Örebro and Oskarshamn are falling behind and are now outside the playoff spots.

Troja/Ljungby is still caught in no-mans land, while Tingsryd and Almtuna both have passed Asplöven. Those three teams fight to avoid Kvalserien. Karlskrona in 14th place can probably start to prepare for that series already.

Is this.........finally..........Leksands' year?

Bennison
08-01-2013, 09:58
Who knows. They have played well in the regular season before and then just not quite had the edge in Kvalserien. They have a strong team this year and having only added 2 players since last year they know each other well.

On the down side, there are a lot of distractions on the side, with Leksand going through financial reconstruction in the court system. But perhaps that can strengthen the team spirit?

I have thought that it was Leksand's year many times now, and I've been wrong each time. I'll try and remain cautiously optimistic, and when Kvalserien starts (if Leksand plays of course) I'll certainly do my part in cheering them on.

Bennison, it seems as Michael Raffl is doing pretty good right now for Leksands. How do you see his development in Allsvenskan?

Bennison
26-01-2013, 17:30
I think that Michael Raffl has improved his game tremendously over the course of this season and last. He is arguably the most valuable player in Leksand this season, as he is leading the team in goals scored and he is second in the plus/minus stats.

I hope plucky little Asploven can avoid Kvalserein.

Yeah, its good to see Asploven being so competitive in their first season in Allsvenskan. Does anyone know at what stage their arena reconstuction is at and what their planned final capacity is? I think there's definitely potential for the Haparanada/Tornio region to support a team at that level if they can build a modern arena. I heard that they moved a recent game to the COOP Arena in Lulea and got a crowd of 5000 (though I think they may have offered free entry and possibly free transport for fans). Still quite impressvie for a club who were averaging attendecnes of c.500 last season.

That said, I like all the teams currently struggling at the bottom this season. Karlskrona have built a great fan culture, TAIF have a classic and atmospheric old stadium with strong local support and the obvious potential for an Ice Hockey team in Uppsala is still great. Any further news on Almtuna getting a new arena? It would be shame if when they finally got permission for one if they were in the 3rd tier.

I think Allsvenskan has been more interesting to follow than Eliterserien this season. The lockout players have helped and events like the Daladerby at Globen last month provided a great showcase for the league and that particularly rivalry.

Kvalserien looks to be shaping up nicely. Hopefully Bjorkloven can get promoted back. Would be great to see them playing Asploven and potentially Timra in Allsvenskan next season to give the league more representation in the north.

Leksand, Karlskoga and Södertälje continue in the top three positions, but Djurgården has been playing very good lately and is closing in on that third place. 9 straight wins for Leksand has given them a healthy lead and they are already all but qualified for Kvalserien.

Malmö has lost 8 of the last 9 games and has now fallen to 9th place. They can still reach 7th place and a playoff-spot, but they really need to start winning now to make that happen.

At the bottom, Tingsryd and newcomers Asplöven has pulled away somewhat from Almtuna, but with 8 games to go, all three teams need to be on their toes.

Two rounds to of the regular season. Leksand secured the league win a couple of rounds ago and has relaxed their play in the last couple of games. Södertälje became the second team from Hockeyallsvenskan to secure their Kvalserien spot and Västerås is definitely in the drivers seat to secure third place.

Karlskoga, Djurgården, Örebro and Oskarshamn or Mora will play the pre-qualification series. Malmö still has a shot but is realistically out of the picture.

Further down Asplöven has all but secured their continued existence in Hockeyallsvenskan, but behind them Almtuna is looking hot while Tingsryd has been struggling. It's really open which team will follow Karlskrona to the other Kvalserien, the one for Hockeyallsvenskan.
