9 teams have already submitted every necessary papers for the next season of MOL Liga. These are:

http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Romania.gif Corona Brasov Wolves
http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Romania.gif Csíkszeredai Sportklub (Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc)
http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Hungary.gif Debreceni HK
http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Hungary.gif Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák
http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Hungary.gif DVTK Jegesmedvék
http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Hungary.gif Fehérvári Titánok (new name for Fehérvár AV19 farmteam)
http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Hungary.gif Ferencváros
http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Hungary.gif MAC Budapest
http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Hungary.gif UTE

http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Romania.gif Dunarea Galati also wants to join the league, transferred the registration fee and apparently submitted papers in a second round. However, their membership is subject of approval of the league and the Hungarian Federation.

http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Croatia.gif Medvescak Zagreb contacted the Hungarian Federation in the past some days saying that they wish to join the league with their second team (maybe the same what considered to play in Austrian-Italian-Slovenian AHL) and there is also interest from the Serbian Federation which wants to play with the core of the http://www.internationalhockey.net/flags/flags_ani/Serbia.gif Serbian NT (with some import reinforcement).

An interesting League meeting will take place on friday, where the members have to decide on Galati, Medvescak and the Serbian team.

knowing the situation in the Serbian hockey, i dont believe in this. Who will finance this team? There is no money for socks, not to mention several hundred thousand euros for this team.

Hopefully everything goes well for Medvescak (and for Partizan), entering MOL would make me more happy than when we enter KHL.

any news on medvescak ?

The communication is a bit harder with them. They received a list of questions what they have to answer and as far as I know they are considering what might be a feasible option for them. I think a common team from the three Zagreb clubs (the best young players and the homegrown core of the NT) with the help of the federation would be the best option for them - like for the serbs.

The question is: really how serious they are - MOL Liga can not be played on amateur basis, it's at least semi-pro like the new Alps League. You have to travel to large distances (Brasov, M.Ciuc, now also Galati), Romanian matches will be organised in tours (teams don't have to travel so many times, but they have to play more matches during the tour in Romania, so it takes several days), there are matches during the christmas holiday, etc. In exchange it's a full season series but the IIHF championships are taken into consideration so the whole will be finished before the world champs starts, there will be time for the national teams to prepare for their IHWC.

According to Crvena Zvezda Facebook-site Medvescak will participate in the slovenian league together with Zvezda. Medvescak will play with only domestic players.
The Serbian NT should play in MOL according to the same source.

So, even if HK Beograd wants to play in MOL, all depends on existing club members. Is there any possibilities of influence on clubs to vote for HK Beograd?

Roster is more or less unimportant, there are 32 players and 4 goalies?.. I think, with new coach from Russia they will have a try-out on the begining, where most of the players will be cut from preliminary roster.. so, 2g+6d+12f, players (rest of them will be send to mother clubs) and later on coach will make decision about imports 1+5..

How big are the approximate budgets of Hungarian teams in MOL?

How big are the approximate budgets of Hungarian teams in MOL?

~500k EUR in average - the costs of the home players have risen sharply in the past year, because the 3 new teams included in the past 3 years meant that there are no enough home players right now. (last season more than 25% of the home players were U20, more than half U22 (including U20), and there were teams who could not nominate a full roster for the matches). But it makes room for the youngsters to develop.

To compare - Fehérvár have a budget 4 or 5 times higher for EBEL. The difference in the level is not that big than the difference in the budget.

Romanian teams have higher budget - the cost of the home players is even higher for them.

But still - a good icehockey team in the MOL Liga is cheaper than a good basketball, handball or waterpolo team in the Hungarian championship.

I think HK Beograd can make it from a lower budget.

As I wrote, the budget depends on many things. One of the most important is that how much money do the home players cost? In Hungary, where we are short of home players right now, many of them earn as much money as the best imports or even more. Normally they should be cheaper. I think in Serbia the players will be keen on playing for less money.

I think travel and accomodation for the away matches will be around 30.000 EUR but not more than 50.000. So it is roughly 10% of the whole budget. Everything else are local costs (rent of the ice in Belgrade, other organisation costs, payment for the players and staff, rent of apartments for import players in Belgrade, and gears) and is up to the team itself. The team can of course also sell tickets for the matches, they will have at least 20 home matches, if they can have an average of 1.000 fans on the stands and the ticket costs let's say 3 EUR, than it's alone 60.000 EUR as an income, more than the cost of the away matches. It is also possible to make money from merchandizing, gastronomy, etc., I don't say that you can reach the break even without sponsors, but I really do not think that a 300...500 k EUR budget is a mission impossible. As far as I know, there are some very successful businessman (and woman) in the board of the Federation, i think they will know what to do.

MOL gives a certain sum for the League and it is up to the league how they use it. I don't know what is the recent policy, when I was the chairperson, we used a certain part of the sum for sponsoring the first 4 placed teams and the rest was divided equally between the teams. But this money is not enough to solve the financial problems of a team.

The league is not even start, but in Serbia there is now a big problem with the fans. Both sides, the fans of Zvezda and Partizan will probably boycot the games. They think that this is some kind of fusion of the two clubs and they are against that, especially hard core of fans. No way, that they will attend the games. So just regular fans, maybe it is the best for all. Really strange situation, the newspapers and media made a teriblle mistake when they put information on media that this is fusion of two clubs.

Maybe a certain hope that Belgrade will have normal fans instead of these "hardcore". Both Serbian teams and the federation took a not very typical step in Balkan sports and that is to try to solve a problem in an as much as possible rational way. "Separately we can´t, together we can!"
Personally I will not miss them "fans". I am (or maybe even used to be) a Red Star- fan but I´m truly fed up with these so called "hardcore-fans" and with both Partizan and Zvezda in general. These fans together with rather suspiscous "buisnessmen" and "politicians" and "patriots" destroyed the football already and are on their way to destroy basket aswell. They are not needed in hockey - or any sport.
If these guys behind HK Belgrade are serious they would find other ways to attract sportslovers and families to the games. Maybe it could be a start to a new culture at the stands aswell as it could be for serbian hockey in general?

The intellegence of these "hardcorers" by the way is shown quite frequent if you read their comments where they usually only read the headline. Besides that they propably never been to a hockeygame and don´t know much about hockey at all. As for their concern it´s better to be champion in the serbian (beer) league than to develop the hockey in Serbia itself. Something that both Zvezdas and Partizans organisations only could gain from. And that´s more typical rather than rationality in serbian sport....:c032:

Looking at the roster posted on jkb.hu, besides a few players, the team is made up of Zvezda and Partizan players.

They need to market this as (1) better entertainment with a more talented team competing in a more competitive league and (2) a greater opportunity to develop the Serbian national hockey program.

There may be initial resentment by some, but if things go well early, these fans may reconsider.

for example with the direct matches of MOL Liga teams against EBEL-Fehérvár...?

And how would these results tell you what the appropriate difference in level in relation to the financial differences is?
The question is how should (in your view) the results of two pro teams be distributed when the one has a budget of 500k and the other a budget of say 3M. How often should the richer team win and how should the scores look like?
And concerning the EBEL-MOL statement do you have enough observations at all to substantiate your claim...especially observations under circumstances that are the same for both sides?

EBEL teams for instance regularily play NLA teams who tend to have bigger budgets (to say the least) and it's not always the Swiss teams that win. Does it make sense to say the financial differences of NLA and EBEL are higher than the level of play? It's not that easy ;-) The marginal impact of money spent on players certainly is decreasing, that I am pretty sure of . Other than that what you have said touches on a question that puzzles sports economists since a long time.

Yes, I have enough observations. I saw most of the matches (about 90% of them) between MOL teams and Fehérvár EBEL in the past 8 years. And I saw how the level of MOL teams came closer and closer with the years to the level of Fehérvár and I saw how Fehérvár lost two Hungarian cups in a row against MOL teams and how they were fighting for advancing to the cup finals in the third season. And I saw how much more did it mean for Fehérvár players to win the Cup this season than winning the cup or the championships some years ago, how different they celebrated their victory now than then. And I see that contrary to what was the case some years ago when Fehérvár easily won most of their matches, now they have to give most of what they have to win. And I saw that while some years ago we started the preparation for the World Championships with the home players of Fehérvár and some more, altogether not more than 30 players, this year we started the preparation with 78 players in the big preliminary roster most of them obviously coming from MOL Liga. And I saw that while some years ago playing in EBEL in Fehérvár was almost equal with a spot in the NT now it is not like that anymore. And I saw how MOL Liga players were giving a run for our EBEL and foreign players to reach their final spot in the roster, even getting a spot in the roster instead of an EBEL player.

This is not anything offense against Fehérvár but a credit for the other clubs who were working hard to improve in the shadow of our EBEL team.

I hope this answers your question.

RexKramer
07-07-2016, 13:46
No, this is not an aswer to my question as it is not an argument for your initial statement. You said that the financial differences between Fehervar and MOL Liga teams are not in line with the differences on the ice. My point is that I we can hardly say how the differences on the ice should relate to the differences in budgets because we don't really know how money spent translates into on ice playing strength.

That MOL liga got more and more competitive in the recent years and closed the gap to Fehervar I don't doubt. The point is that I have little faith that any MOL Liga team would be able to entirely close the gap without spending about the same money as Fehervar does.

And the fact the AV19 is not winning all intra-Hungarian games anymore doesn't imply the other teams are already on par as we compare how one team (Fehervar) fares against several other teams (whoever they happen to have to play in the domestic league/cup). Especially in the cup this is a biased comparison as the one team we focus on has to play (and will eventually also lose) against the better/best of the others.

Debrecen signed a MOL Liga winner goalie from DVTK/Miskolc, MAC Budapest signed the only four-time MOL Liga winner player, Somogyi Balázs from DVTK/Miskolc and the most talented young local player from Debrecen.

Great for DVTK Jegesmedvék. Rastislav Stana was a really great goalie and if his that good as goalie-coach then the club gained something good.

We had him in Södertälje for a while and he became really popular both as goalie and in private. Congrats to DVTK.

Good pickup by DVTK ...but have to give props to Janne Ohman in both Södertälje and now Djurgĺrdens!
