It could seem a little early to open a thread for a summer tournament but as the preliminary schedule is out and there are some news I thought it was time. The perceptive readers might have already noticed that there are two new teams entering the circuit this year: HV71 from Sweden and Jokerit from Finland. The president of Nordic Trophy, Christer Mård comments: "We’re happy to see that Nordic Trophy continues to develop. At this time it’s natural to expand the tournament with one new team from each of the participating countries, Sweden and Finland."

The format will be the same as last year. The round robin is a single round so it is 9 games for each team. This year the final weekend will be played in Linköping at Cloetta Center.

The prestige of the Nordic Trophy is definitely on the rise as the newcomers are both powerhouses in their domestic leagues.

Yes i really like this tournament. It could be fun if a Danish and a Norwegian team could join sometime, eventhough the outcome would be clear.

It has been usual practice by especially the Swedish teams to play some or all of their Nordic Trophy games away from home in some smaller towns. Now Frölunda and Djurgården will take this even further as they are leaving their own country to play their NT home game! On August 29th Djurgården will face Färjestad in Oslo, Norway and Frölunda will play the Swedish champion HV71 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This will be especially cool for Frölunda's Danish players Phillip Larsen and Lars Eller as well as Färjestad's Norwegian players Jonas Holøs and Marius Holtet.

Now we only need HIFK and Jokerit to play a game in Tallinn!

Go to St. Petersburg and play a couple of games against SKA...it would be interesting IMHO

But it wouldn't exactly be natural since this is the Nordic Trophy tournament, would it? :c032:

Maybe Vestra Frölunda will also give some playing time to danish juniors Mark Mieritz and Sebastian Svendsen since they are playing in Copenhagen and most likely in Rødovre, where they along with Eller are from.

Could be nice :c256:

While they would likely lose all of their games, I don't think Herning (Danish champions) or Storhamar (Norwegian champions) would be blown out every night. They'd likely be at least semi-competitive. The Danish and Norwegian champs should each participate.

I like the tournament, it's interesting seeing foreign teams for once. But quite annoying having to travel to other localities and cities to see the games.

Could happen. Previous years they have used youngsters extensively during the pre-season. Bødker, Eller, Larsen(?), all play their first games with the senior squad during the pre-season.

For marketing purpose it's a good idea.

I don't think the danish and norwegian champions would loose all their games against these teams - especially not if they (likely) use their best team while the swedish and finnish clubs (likely) experiment more and try out youth players etc.

Let's not forget that Rødovre actually beat Hamburg (DEL), Plzen (CZE) and Fribourg (NLA) last preseason.

No they would probably not. I think at least Herning could fare okay in a tournament like this. What i meant was that there is no chance they could win...but hey, it would still be a nice thing.

Of course you can argue that St Petersburg of course is more Eastern, but also located quite at north! Actually is northern than Copenaghen and also most of Swedish hockey cities!

The odds are that Herning and Storhamar wouldn't win much if the Elitserien and SM-Liiga teams gave 100% against them.

But again, I do believe Herning and Storhamar wouldn't be getting killed, either. At least not that often.

Could they each steal a win or two? Sure.

The schedule has now been finalized. This year the teams have taken their games to smaller cities more than ever before. No team plays all their games in their home arena. Even Kärpät has placed one game in Rovaniemi despite the fact that they could expect a crowd of 3,000-4,000 in Oulu. Unfortunately the planned game in Copenhagen has been relocated to Sweden. Oslo will however see one NT game as planned. Altogether Nordic Trophy is still expanding its geographic cover. This year we will see the most Eastern, Northern and Western games ever in NT (Joensuu, Rovaniemi, Oslo).

I think the champions from Denmark and Norway should be in - then they could even call it The official Nordic Club Championship :c032:

Edit : LOL, just realised I have already posted almost the same a while ago - damn memory.

No idea. I just noticed that Copenhagen had been changed to Mölndal on the NT website.

Not sure but at most two weeks before that, most likely a week less. But I believe that the teams have mainly used junior/try-out squads, the senior and core players have got more freedom. Of the five Finnish teams only Jokerit and Kärpät have played a game this season. Jokerit played some minigames in Pitsiturnaus and Kärpät faced a Mestis team. In both occasions nearly all core players were absent.

This is Frölunda's first game and they will rest Ronnie Sundin, Andreas Holmqvist, Niklas Andersson, Andreas Karlsson, Fredrik Pettersson, and Johan Holmqvist against TPS. Juniors Jens Hellgren, Henrik Tömmernes, Casper Carning, Sebastian Blomsterwall, and Dennis Pegenius will play instead. Joakim Andersson and Erik Karlsson are not available since they are playing for the national junior team.

HV71 will use the road-trip to Finland as a typical upstart of the season icing as lot of players. "It's clear we want to win games", coach Kenta Johansson says, "but its more important that as many players as possible get ice time".
HV71 has been on ice 5 times so far, and Kenta Johansson says that the team already looks pretty sharp.

In contrast to HV71, Djurgården will only play with 3 lines on its road-trip to Finland. "It's going to be exciting, coach Mikael Johansson says". "We haven't been on ice for ages. That's far from optimal but its a way of get the preps for the next season going".

Färjestad at least played today with a nearly full squad. Only Ari Vallin, Lee Goren and Jesper Mattson were missing. Kärpät missed their two top centers Jari Viuhkola and Tommi Paakkolanvaara. More than 6,000 viewers came to see Kärpät win 2-0. Today there was no entrance fee.

I will add the box scores later.

Ask the Minnesota Wild, they use the same jersey with different logos. It looks sharp though.

Ask the Minnesota Wild, they use the same jersey with different logos. It looks sharp though.

I know, Frölunda has copied the Wild since 2004, not something they try to hide. They had articles when they first made the change explaining why they did it and such. But if they are using the one from the Nordic Trophy they are going retro, Frölunda used a green jersey with Frölunda diagonally across the chest during the 60's.

A very exciting final round coming up. Even though HIFK won against Kärpät today, the game between HIFK and Jokerit will decide which Finnish team goes into the top 4. If HIFK gets even one point, they'll advance but if they lose the game, their goal difference will be worse than Kärpät's and Kärpät will go to the semifinals. The tail end of the table is also very exciting with Tappara, Jokerit and HV71 fighting over the last top 8 spot.

BTW. the first NT game in Norway was a success, at least by looking at the attendance.

Linköping looking sharp, 1-0 after the first, good speed in the game.

Really entertaining game, too bad it had to end with a LHC player falling like an Italian soccer player.

I'll just post this here since I don't want to open the thread for NT 2009 just yet.

Two new teams have been confirmed to join the Nordic Trophy: Lukko Rauma and Malmö Redhawks. It remains to be seen if the single preliminary round system will change. With 12 teams in the tournament that would already mean a total of 11 games for each team not counting the final weekend.

In related news Tappara Tampere has announced that they won't participate in the 2009 Tampere Cup, a long standing pre-season tournament they have co-organized with Ilves since early 90s. This is due to the heavy schedule of the NT.
