    Latvian League System

    How does Latvian hockey work?

I understand Premjerliga is the highest league, where top teams except Dinamo Riga is playing.

But below that, how is it? What is tier 2? Where can I find current standings?
Are there any promotion to Premjerliga?

    Latvian hockey hierarchy:

    1) Dinamo Riga
    2) Metalurgs Liepaja (Belarusian Extraleague, however there are rumours that they could lack money to play in Belarus also next year)
    3) Latvian league (currently incl. U20 teams)

No promotion/relegation exists - as teams attract literally no money from attendance/ads/etc., they change regularly. Before each season teams apply their willingness to participate to the federation and the federation decides.

There are two league that could be considered the second-tier tournament - Riga Open Championship and Vidzeme Championship, which are both half-amateur leagues.

    Thanks!

I managed to find 5 different local league system:
    Ogre League
    Riga League
    Vidzemes League
    United League
    Jelgava League

I realize that Riga, Ogre and Jelgava are cities, so the league is around those regions.

But which region is United League and Vidzeme League for?

You can check http://uhl.lv/ for united league.

Latvia consists of four different regions - Latgale, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Vidzeme. And Vidzeme region is the North-Eastern one that shares the border with Estonia. Last I heard, some Estonian clubs play there as well. You can easily check where the region is located geographically with google.

The UHL league has a nice image it looks very professional. Im assuming its just an amateur league though? No pay? Or maybe expenses for the really good guys?

Also in the UHL website on League C i think it was there is a team named 'Supermario' with the actual Super Mario logo? Surely that would be against copy right :P

Haha nice comment! I guess it's too easy to make up a nice slick looking logo!

That's tha sad part... Our amateur leagues have better homepages and generally image than Latvian league covered by the hockey federation...
