    Icebox 2011

I thought this deserves its own thread.

On June 2nd the first-ever ice hockey player boxing tournament will take place in Arena Riga.

    The so-far announced participants:

Participants: (there will be a total of 8 participants)

    Brandon Sugden (Vityaz Chekhov, KHL)
    Kip Brennan (Chicago Wolves, AHL)
Evgeny Artyukhin (SKA St. Petersburg, KHL)
Ronald Petrovicky (09/10 for Springfield Falcons, AHL, played part of 08/09 for Dinamo Riga)

    Jury members:

Raitis Ivanans (injured since October, otherwise would probably take part)
Kaspars Kambala (well-known Latvian basketball player, who turned to professional boxing, while he had a 2 year DSQ from basketball due to doping)
Andrei Nazarov (head coach of Vityaz, first Russian enforcer in the NHL)
    Fedor Emelanenko (MMA fighter)

Well, this is an statement announcing the first four participants:

    http://sportacentrs.com/hokejs/jaunu...x_2011_dalibni

They don't have a homepage. Also, the tickets are for sale for at least a month already.

I doubt it is going to be a sellout - I suspect that many people don't even know that such an event is going to take place, as advertising so far has been rather quiet.

However, it seems that the organizers behind the event want to promote it and make it bigger and bigger - in one of the press announcements it was said that the idea has caused an interest from several countries and that already next year the final could take place already outside Latvia. (Also meaning that they plan to have semifinal etc. rounds) We'll see, how it develops. It would be nice if Viasat broadcasted whole event.

Really wonder who the other four are going to be, would be pretty cool if Geroges Laraque was part of tournament. I suspect them to atleast start to really put up adverts near the end of May, non of my buddies even knew this was going on till I told them.

Anybody going to attend, GX, itry, Oz?

I really, really hate this idea and hope it fails miserably. Though it would be nice to see someone knocking out Artukhin.

If it would be broadcasted on TV, I would at least turn it on and see how it is going, as, I suspect, it might be interesting, but no, I'm not attending. Moreover, I have an exam on June 3rd. :)

Yup, bad time for me as well. Even if I would have the money and will to attend such an event I probably have exams somewhere on those dates and have to work on my final paper. But if it will be on TV I'll definitely tune in.

Thou I can't understand why would anyone want them to fail. I can understand not liking such a thing but wishing them to fail is just low. I'd speculate they will get their 5 to 7 thousand people there as I understand they will advertise it more when the time comes. It targets not only hockey but also fighting/boxing fans and people that want to see a nice show so I guess it won't flop. With a nice TV deal, sponsors, bets and so on this might turn out to be rather interesting product for icebox crew. The idea isn't new but they are the first ones to try it.

What's the point of watching "unprofessional" fighters having a go at each other? Want to see a fight, go to a real boxing event instead. Useless hockey players like Ivanans and Sugden, and headcases like Artukhin finally will have their 15 minutes of fame.

I have to agree! I don't like the idea. Fighting in hockey, to me anyway is just a way to sell the game to 'beer league' American teams! I got no problem with enforcers and fighting, though this has its comical aspect for a one off event I wouldn't like to see these types of events every year!

    Just my views

The fifth fighter will be Aleksejs Širokovs. Kinda odd choice if you ask me.

So 3 more unknowns to go.

Wow, Širokovs career is going down faster than a five-dollar hooker. Oh well, I never really liked him.

Weird choices. I suspect that both Petrovicky and Sirokovs are added to attract more spectators. I doubt that they will attract any, except their own friends.

So the last two guys announced
    they are going to be

Mairis Briedis - some kind of Latvian boxer
Kaspars Astašenko - former NHL and Latvian national team player

meh, kinda leaves me emotionless. This thing is going for a flop.

Probably these are really not the guys the organisers were hoping for and things haven't really gone their way.

This event went from something I was really looking forward to seeing how it turned out to now this. I will probably still go check it out but no longer excited.
