Eisbären Berlin has terminated the contract of Björn Svensson because they would rather groom their youngsters as well as Sven Felski is coming back sooner then they thought.

Wolfsburg has extended the contract of Armin Wurm (D) for another 2-years.

EHC München is trying to schedule their 30.December match-up with Augsburg to play in Olympiahalle that seats 12,000 for ice hockey. München usually plays in Olympia Eishalle which seats just a little over 6200.

I wouldnt say there is really clear favourite but a couple front runners, atleast from pre-season looks. Berlin in my mind will once again be a threat, DEG looks like they can repeat their performance from last season and Köln under Krupp seems to be looking pretty good after their 2 tournament wins so far.
Hamburg is having a great pre-season but I dont really trust them since most of their wins have come against the Danish AL Bank-Ligaen and Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan.

Wolfsburg looks weaker this year and Krefeld right now is destroyed by injuries. I would say the rest of the clubs are all pretty much in the mix just like last season.

Though the season kicks off today, there is uncertain with DEG moving past this season. This will be the last year that Metro AG (the main sponsor of DEG Metro Stars) will sponsor the club, as DEG searches for a new main sponsor, the future dosnt look all that great but GM Lance Nethery does remain optimistic.

If Düsseldorf has to leave the DEL its not a big deal for us in Germany. They have an attendance of around 3.000 in a city with half a million inhabitants... thats ridiculous. Almost any team of the 2. Bundesliga could do better than them !

My team (Cologne) had quite a good preseason and I hope Uwe Krupp helps the team to improve a lot. During the last 3 seasons we almost didn't make the playoffs so I would be really happy to finish between the top 6 after the regular season. One good thing about the DEL is that almost every team can win the championship ! In the last 11 years we had 7 different champions !

Would it not be pity for all Köln fans if your long time Rhein derby archrival DEG disappeared from DEL?

The games against the DEG Metro Stars attract like 2.000 ppl more (12.000 instead of 10.000) but there are only 2 home games against them every year while on the other hand Düsseldorf really benefits from Cologne (they get a crowd of 8.000 instead of 3.000 against us).

Cologne has a lot of other rivalries in the league (especially with Adler Mannheim because for a long time they were also competing for the title or with Iserlohn (mainly because of their fans)) but also minor rivalries Krefeld (2nd Rhine derby), Berlin. Also Wolfsburg is not really liked.

If DEG can't find a sponsor for the team to stay in the DEL they will mostly likely be play in the 2nd Bundesliga next year is this correct?

Maybe. Maybe they will just have their amateur teams (just like Frankfurt, Kassel & Duisburg).

Having got to watch some of Köln pre-season matches, it would not surprise me at all if they finish in the Top 6. They all seemed to work so well today and added the fact that all their lines helped in on the scoring, as well as getting goals from the defence. Unless you guys start getting injury bitten or the support lines scoring dries up, I bet you clear the Top 6 easy.

Just a reminder, for the first time this season and match one of eight if I remember correctly, the DEL and Eurosport partnership bring you Köln v. Augsburg at 18.45.

    Should be a 1:2/OT (0:1, 0:0, 1:0, 0:1) !

It was a very close game. Cologne started quite weak but then they wasted so many chances... 2 mins before the OT Cologne had 2 big chances to get the full 3 points and then in the OT a 4 on 3 PP didn't help.

Quick question to our Cologne followers: how is Andre Lakos doing so far, are you satisfied with his performance?

Andre Lakos is doing a really good job until now ! He is one of the guys you don't see that often on the puck but he is one of the players who really help the team with their style of playing and give the others room.

PS: He is +3 after 3 games and has already 2 points.

The Discipline Committee has suspended both André Reiß from Hannover and Rick Girard from Ingolstadt for 2 matches. Reiß received a match penalty for checking from behind and Girard for checking to the head, on top of being suspended, both will pay 600 Euro fine.

This should come to the surprise of nobody, Thomas Sabo fires head coach Andreas Brockmann after their 2:8 beating they took on Friday. Nürnberg to start the season is the only club left still looking for points, going 0-3 in 3 matches, assistant coach Derek Mayer will take over the duties for the moment.

Last night Berlin v. Mannheim match was played on the small ice because they couldnt change over to the IIHF standard after the NHL match. After the match former player and head coach Hans Zach made the plea for the DEL to change all of its rinks to the NHL sizes, saying it would be more attractive and have more shots thrown towards the nets (last night was a total of 91).
In the poll on article, 76% of fans would want the change, 17% want it to stay the same and 7% want to see a larger sample size.

I personally dont like the NHL size rinks but if the DEL was going to change, they really need a larger sample size. Berlin and Mannheim are two of the best clubs who throw a ton of shots on net even on the big ice, it would be better to test it out next pre-season and if it works out well change it for the 2013/2014 season.

According to an article in the Hamburger Abendblatt, the AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group) is about to reconsider its involvement with Hamburg Freezers and expand their commitment with the club. At the beginning of the season it was rumoured that Red Bull was going to take over but problems with that naming of the club (Red Bull usually names their clubs Red Bull "Enter city name") come about and the story ends there. As it stands right now, AEG will drop Hamburg after the end of the current season.
