A lot of people, every year, come on to these forums and denigrate the AHL, because they know nothing about it.

They see it as a "farm league" - which it is - and think "low level," which it is not.

It is equal or better in level than the Top-7 European leagues (except for the KHL, which it is a bit behind). Style wise, it is North American - very physical, fast paced, and not as technical as European hockey. Compared to Europe, it is most similar in combined level & style of play to SM-Liiga, DEL and perhaps NLA.

While many Europeans from Top-7 European leagues do not want to play in the AHL, there are plenty who do not mind doing so, as they adjust their game to the North American style in an effort to make the NHL down the road.

Recently, Detroit Red Wings prospect Gustav Nyquist, from Sweden, had this to say about the AHL -

"It’s a tough league. They’re all strong and big up here and a lot of players are skilled and it’s tough to get to the net – they box out hard and the goalies are good. It’s a tough league to play in, but it’s been a fun experience so far.”

Here are some highlights which show the AHL's high speed and skill level - this is a random game from this season (Connecticut Whale vs. Adirondack Phantoms):

Clips from the Hershey Bears vs. Norfolk Admirals....this was Hershey's home opener this season. Watch the skill plays and look at the crowd support that Hershey enjoys....they draw more than 10,000 per game. The oldest (since 1923) and best supported AHL team.
Norfolk won this particular game 6-5 in OT.

Hopefully the videos I am posting give you a feel for AHL hockey.

    In residence?

Sorry guys if this is the wrong tread but I didn’t know where else to ask the question.
Well the question is about the AHL Clear Day Roster and the concept “in residence”. The case is Oliver Lauridsen playing for Adirondack Phantoms. He was announced “in residence” on the AHL Clear Day list. With my limited knowledge of NA hockey I would think that the designation “in residence” would be an indication of a player that is not among the core players and at the margin of the roster. Am I completely wrong? It should be mentioned that Oliver Lauridsen probably in no way is about to earn a spot in the Flyers team.

You are correct. 'In residence' means that he did not make the Clear Day roster, but was not completely cut from it either. It means that he can only be re-added to the roster and play for the remainder of this season and the playoffs in case of an injury to one of the players who made the Clear Day roster.

The Norfolk Admirals have set the all time winning streak record in the AHL's 76 year history, having won their 18th straight game.

Norfolk, currently the top farm team of the Tampa Bay Lightning, has not lost since February 6th.

I will post regular season final standings and playoff results, with video clips as I can find them, after the IIHF Worlds, so that our forums still give you reading/viewing material, and something to discuss if you wish, into the late spring.

If anyone else would like to step up and cover this before then, I would welcome the help.

This game (and series) features two highly prized European goaltending prospects going head to head, with Jakob Markstrom opposing Eddie Lack. The first game wasn't exactly a fine display of goaltending, though....

The Norfolk Admirals finished the regular season on an absolutely incredible 28 game winning streak.

Their series opening 3-2 victory over Manchester was their 29th consecutive win..........unbelievable!

Of course, now that the AHL is basically two different leagues over the past couple of seasons (since the Eastern and Western conference teams never face each other anymore, except for the Calder Cup finals), perhaps a Western team will be able to stop them assuming they do in fact make the finals. We will have to wait and see.

In the meantime, their incredible streak continues.

I am looking for them.....they are a fascinating story this year.

EDIT: Oops, just saw you asked for the Milwaukee Admirals, as opposed to the Norfolk Admirals.

I'll see what I can do.

Norfolk's incredible, record breaking (& record setting) winning streak, stretching from the regular season into the playoffs, ended at 29 tonight, as they lost 5-2 to the Manchester Monarchs. Their best of five series is now tied at one game each.

Just a quick note - first round series are best of five; later rounds are best of seven.

Some great highlights from Connecticut-Bridgeport Game 3....some sweet passing plays, and a whiffed penalty shot:

Also some good highlights of San Antonio-Chicago Wolves Game 2, though they do show the Rampage goals several times each:

20 year old Slovakian rookie forward Marek Hrivak stepped out of junior hockey and into the Connecticut Whale lineup at the end of the regular season, posting 1 point (a goal) in 8 games.

However, he was critical for the Whale in its opening round playoff sweep of arch-rival Bridgeport, scoring 4 goals in the 3 games.

He now has interest from the Rangers and other NHL clubs.....
