*) The first Amsterdam - Geleen game of this round was cancelled due to bad weather. If The Netherlands are covered in one and a half inches of snow, the country grinds to a halt. It was impossible for Geleen to travel to Amsterdam, all of the roads were filled with traffic jams.
Since no date could be found to replay this game, the second game counted double in the standings.

Netherlands Is this the year? Finally?

    Thx Marc, much appreciated.

We, the Geleen Smoke Eaters, are the eternal #2 of Dutch Hockey. Some call us the Chicago Cubs of Dutch Hockey, but the Cubs actually DID win two titles. Others call of the Maple Leafs of Dutch Hockey, but I take offense to that: The Leafs haven't won the cup since 1967. The Smoke Eaters weren't established until 1968, so our championship drought isn't as long as Toronto's ;-)

    The sad facts:

Before play-offs were introduced in Dutch Hockey, we were runner-ups in 1972, 1974 and 1986.
    We lost the Championship Finals in 1987, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995.
So the number of Championships won: zero.

So pretty much everyone outside of The Hague wants us to win it. FINALLY win it.

"Oh, but you did win the Dutch Cup, didn't you?"
Yes, we won that baby twice, in 1993 and 2010, but the Dutch Championship is much more important that the Dutch Cup. And even in the Dutch Cup, the losses outweigh the wins:
We were runner-up to the Dutch Cup in 1986 and 1987 and lost the Dutch Cup Final in 1992, 1994, 1995, 2001 and 2007.

So they are basically the equivalent of the post-1940 NY Rangers (sans 1994).

They need two big wins in a row now to avoid a tenth second place finish and remain a bridesmaid.

    Hope they can do it.

    Best-of-Five series tied 2-2

Many in Geleen thought we didn't have a chance: our Top scorer Ian McDonald was sidelined due to concussion-like symptoms. Kay Gielen was still suspended, and captain Dennis Ten Bokkel is still in the hospital (first reports indicate a succesfull surgery). Erik Tummers has been out for weeks already.
HYS The Hague was only missing Marcel Bruinsma (for almost two months already, due to a concussion). But during warm-up it became apparent that their top goalie Imrich Petrik was injured, he hardly took part in any warm-up drills and never went down on his knees. Fabian Schotel got the start, and the first shot on goal was the 1-0. It seemed like he never really recovered from that and his defencemen became increasingly nervous.

For Game 5, Gielen is back in the line-up, and McDonald is expected to return as well. I don't know about Petrik's condition, though.

The party still hasn't stopped ;-)

After the game in The Hague we all drove back to the home rink, where approx. 1000 people were waiting for the arrival of the team bus, which arrived at 2:45 AM. The team was brought onto the ice where they showed the cup to the fans in the stands. After that, the team bar was open until six. Ish. ;-)

I got home at about 6:30 in the morning, due for another round of chemotherapy at twelve. That combination wasn't exactly the best, so I needed a few days to recover. Hey, it's not a party if you haven't hugged the porcelain god, eh?

    Amen.

Glad you were able to enjoy the celebrations though Ro, a championship doesn't come along every year (or even every 40 years, it seems). In those cases a little prostration in front of the porcelain god is definitely called for :)
