The qualification for HockeyAllsvenskan next season has started.

The qualification system looks like this:

Playoff 1 - The six Div 1 Spring series winners pair up against the third and fourth placed teams in the three AllEttan series. They play a best-of-three series of games. The pairs are:

    Åker/Strängnäs - Enköping
    Hudiksvall - Huddinge
    Kallinge-Ronneby - Tranås
    Olofström - Nybro

Playoff 2 - The six Playoff 1 winners are joined with two runners-ups from AllEttan, Asplöven and Karlskrona, and play a best-of-three series.

    The pairs are:

    Björklöven - Olofström
    Kallinge-Ronneby - Enköpings
    Asplöven - Huddinge
    Karlskrona HK - Östersund

Playoff 3 - The four PO2 winners team up against the three AllEttan winners and the best runner-up in a best-of-three series. The pairings will be:

    Nyköping - Kallinge-Ronneby
    Vita Hästen - Karlskrona
    Wings Arlanda - Olofström

Should be an interesting final series. Some nice local derbies between Karlskrona, Kallinge-Ronneby and Olofstroms. Is it just coincidence that 3 teams from the same region have made it through? Or is it more to do with youth development/levels of interest in those particular clubs? I know about Karlskrona and their project but not so much about the other two? Do either have the potential to succeed at a higher level?

Asploven always seem to get this far and then lose. I don’t know if it’s the extra travel they have to do for most away games? I would have thought that the Haparanda/Tornio area could support an Allsvenskan team but do Asploven have the infrastructure in place? Their arena is quite small isn’t it?

Anyway, I hope Karlskrona make it. They would certainly be a welcome addition to Allsvenskan and it would be nice to see one of the other teams from Div1 also promote also.

It is interesting to note that none of the teams that advanced directly to Playoff 3 managed to qualify for the Qualification series.

I think generally that hockey in the south of Sweden is strong at this level so that the majority of teams would be from the south is no big surprise. That it is three teams from Blekinge that made it through this particular year is probably just coincidence. Kallinge-Ronneby is a newcomer at Division 1, having promoted from Division 2 last season. I don't see them in the running for promotion. Karlskrona is probably the biggest threat to Borås and Sundsvall, with Olofström as an outsider.

Asplöven as you say always seem to choke at this level, they have a strong team but the tradition of losing in Kvalserien can be too big an obstacle to overcome. Should they promote they have to expand their arena or receive some sort of exception as they only seat 800 while the minimum is 2,000 capacity in HockeyAllsvenskan if I remember correctly.

Borås was given a proper hockey lesson in their first game to renew their Hockeyallsvenskan contract. Karlskrona outplayed them completely and sailed away to a big win. Asplöven struggled valiantly with Sundsvall, ultimately fell. Olofström and Kallinge-Ronneby shared their points. Olofström dominated the first half of the game, but Kallinge-Ronneby managed the equalizer with just over a minute to go.

Karlskrona has started this series really strong, defeating both teams from Hockeyallsvenskan. Borås bounced back from that loss to a strong win against Olofström this round. No team is without points after two rounds, this could turn out to be a really tight series.

They look very good. I expect them to promote.

Is their logo a stag beetle? That's kind of unique.

I tried to find information on their logo, but could not find anything mentioned... They are a relative new club, played their debut season in 2006.

A reaction for Karlskrona tonight. Not much worked tonight, and Olofström took a strong wind and ensured that they are not just along for the ride. Sundsvall scraped in a win against Kallinge-Ronneby and Borås needed Game Winning Shots to defeat Asplöven. The series continues to be tight, with only Kallinge-Ronneby trailing somewhat.

Last year Karlskrona lost the promotion spot in the last round. This year they are in the driver's seat, will they stand the distance this time? The win against Kallinge-Ronneby has put them in a good position, that's for sure.

Asplöven defeated Olofström and showed that they want to play, while Sundsvall just managed to steal the bonus point away from Borås. The series is still tight, and only Kallinge-Ronneby is out so far.

Asplöven in the lead half-way through the series, that is not a scenario many believed in a couple of weeks ago. But the northern team from Haparanda has tightened their defense and is difficult to defeat at home.

Sundsvall and Olofström will play their game on March 30, so neither team can be counted out just yet.

After some expected wins yesterday it now seems that there is a four-team race for the two promotion spots. Karlskrona and Borås are in the driver's seat for now, but Sundsvall has one less game played.

Asplöven will face the 5th and 6th team in their next two games and have a chance of moving up again. Hockeyallsvenskan rivals Borås and Sundsvall face off next, while league leader Karlskrona travels to last-placed Kallinge-Ronneby.

Borås won the important meeting against Hockeyallsvenskan rival Sundsvall. They and Karlskrona have now pulled away to a four point lead, although Sundsvall has one game less played.

Karlskrona also took an important victory tonight, not giving Kallinge-Ronneby a chance. With the win Karlskrona remains at the top of the table.

Olofström toook the chance to close the gap a bit to the teams above with their win against Asplöven. Asplöven has not been able to follow up their strong home games with a good road trip and is starting to lag behind.

Karlskrona has put themselves in a good position for promotion, but they will have to watch out from the teams behind them. Karlskrona will face Sundsvall and Borås in their last two games and will need at least 2 points from those two games to ensure their promotion. Olofstöm is out of the running after their loss tonight, even if it is still theoretically possible for them to reach 2nd place.

Sundsvall defeated Kallinge-Ronneby according to plan and is thereby still in the race.

With the loss against Borås, Asplöven has no chance for promotion. Borås climbed to the same number of points as Karlskrona, and the uphill looks steep for Sundsvall. But it is still not decided.

Great to see Karlskrona promoting. They'll be a good addition to Allsvenskan for next season. Will be interesting to see how they do. I think its a shame there arent more teams from Northern Sweden that will be in Allsvenskan next season but I cant pretend that Sundsvall being relegated is a great loss.

With one round to go it is time to congratulate Karlskrona on promotion and Borås on their good effort to stay in Hockeyallsvenskan. Karlskrona will make a nice addition to Hockeyallsvenskan, even if it is sad that there will no longer be any representation from the north of Sweden in the second highest league. Mora is now the most northern team.

Sundsvall had the chance before the game against Karlskrona to win at home and put some pressure on the other two teams. But Karlskrona was much too strong and won deservedly and I think that their flight home was one big party...

Borås lost against Olofström, but as Sundsvall did not take any points, they secured their spot as well. At least for now. Hockey blogs are now full with speculation on wether Borås will get their elite license. They were playing this season on probation, having had negative equity at the end of last season. This season has been shaky as well, and in december Borås went into "rekonstruktion" (cramdown according to my dictionary??) to restructure their economy and try to force creditors to accept a 30% return on their debts. How the elite license board with rule on this is unknown, and will possibly not be known until well into May.

Borås shaky economy means that the third place may become very important. Currently Olofström is in the driver's seat and we may well see three new teams in Hockeyallsvenskan come fall.

So, it seems Boras are going to be relegated from Allsvenskan after all due to their finances. Are Asploven going to replace them? Is Arena Polarica really going to be suitable for Allsvenskan? I cant imagine DIF or Leksands playing their. Or might they decide to move some games to a different arena in Lulea or Kiruna or elsewhere?

This is till very fresh news, Borås has three weeks to appeal the decision (but I don't see that they can win an appeal). Asplöven has according to blogger Jimmy Stålnacke (http://www.nsd.se/blogg/bloggare.aspx?blogg=4873812) been offered the place as they came in third in Kvalserien.

You are right that Arena Polarica does not meet the arena standards for HockeyAllsvenskan (they only have a capacity of 600, the requirement is for 3,000). They have however been granted an exemption from the rules for the first season if they change some basic requirements like camera positions etc.

Borås appealed the decision, but the decision was upheld. It is now official that Borås will play in Division 1 next season. Asplöven has reportedly been officially offered a position in HockeyAllsvenskan and accepted.

Some modifications of Arena Polarica will be done over the summer, but they will be allowed to play there even if it still does not fulfil all arena requirements.

I read on the HockeyAllsvenskan site that Asploven have accepted the place in Allsvenskan for next season.

I think this is potentially a very exciting opportunity for the Haparanda/Tornio region. When they have expanded their arena they should have the potential to attract a good fanbase.

I hope they can be competitive but it must be difficult for them having to start building their roster for a higher level later than all the other teams. Will they have much financial backing? The extra travelling they will have to do for all away matches must also be an issue.

But hopefully they will succeed. It will be good to have team from further north than Mora in Allsvenskan. Even if I had hoped it would be Bjorkloven…
