    RIP Valeri Vasiliev

I was so sad to hear the news that former great Soviet defenceman, Valerie Vasiliev passed away at the too young age of 62. I remember first seeing him on TV during the Canada-Soviet summit series in 1972. He was a tower of strength on the Soviet blue line, and was arguably the most consistent defenceman balancing offensive and defensive skills. Not many like him since.

He was one of the youngest players on either side participating in that historic eight
game series, having turned 23 that August in 1972.
I was only 15 at the time so he wasn't that much older than me.
Hard to believe he is gone...only 62..wow.
That hits a little too close to home.
