    Uzbekistan revives ice hockey

Still nowhere on here for Central Asian countries so I've posted in 'Middle East'.

    http://centralasiaonline.com/en_GB/a.../14/feature-01

Sounds hopeful for Uzbekistan and regional development.

Well spotted by ' National Teams of Ice Hockey'

That's great news to hear! Let's hope one day they are good enough to compete in the KHL! I know that's a long road for them atm mind

Nevermind the KHL, I'd just love to see them set up a league and compete in the world championships at some point.
Eventually, as a long-term goal, having a team or maybe two in the Kazakh league would be a reasonable goal. You have to think that there might eventually be a Kyrgyz team in the Kazakh league as well (what with the current strength of their program as it showed in the Asian Winter Games)

Good point. The Kazahk league would be a nice goal for them to reach once they are more organised. Plus with the Kyrgyz too, could become a nice new hockey region

Side note from the article: Turkmenistan has actually set up a league? Do we have any information on it at all?

An aspiration of their not very democratic leader. Doubt he has the patience for ground up development.

Ice hockey league created in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Ice hockey league – Uzbekistan Hockey League (UHL) – has been founded in Uzbekistan, the press service of the Ministry of Culture and Sport Affairs of Uzbekistan said.
The press service of the ministry said that the first matches of the new league kicked off yesterday and four teams are attending the event.

Head of new league and captain of team “Binokor” Alisher Azimov said that he visited Dubai and held meeting with hockey veterans of Canada. He said that he proposed them to visit Uzbekistan to hold master class and exhibition matches and they agreed. He noted that they can visit Uzbekistan in March 2013.

He said that UHL was crated and the first matches of new league were held on Monday. Currently, four teams are participating in the league – Binokor, Bars, Beliyi medvedi and Akuli. He said that the league matches will be played on Mondays and Tuesdays each week.

Alisher Azimov said that ice hockey is attracting more and more people, including diplomats, who played hockey in their childhood.

He said that the league is holding negotiations with possible sponsors on construction of new professional ice hockey stadium. He said new stadium will help to attract national teams of foreign countries.

Azimov stated that there are plans to create Asian Hockey League, and Uzbek team can play matches against Kuwait, Bahrain, South Korea, Thailand and Malaysia. He said that they are supporting UHL and ready to arrive in Tashkent to hold special event dedicated to this occasion.

What an odd mix of nations for this 'proposed' league.

Might be a professional franchise league with imported players, perhaps ? Hope it doesn't detract from local player development.

Thanks Davide. A quick search of the internet shows some wikipedia entries for Binokor Tashkent. Apparently a Soviet era team that stopped playing in 1988 !! Hopefully they've managed to recruit some younger players.
Could be more potential for regional competitions if Turkmenistan gets going as well. Never heard about hockey from Tajikistan but you never know. There's also Azerbaijan further to the West.

They seem to be serious about competing internationally. Hopefully they'll apply for IIHF membership at the Congress in May.

After only two months from relaunched in December 2013, Uzbekistan Federation closed and all ambitious plans to partecipate in international tournaments and to revive hockey in UZB crashed. Pity....

New article from Eurohockey.com on Uzbekistan hockey. A few things going on including the construction of a 12,500 seat arena.
