Canada's offense is lethal. Its defense and goaltending are, by its standards, very weak, but probably good enough at this level to still compete for a medal.
It depends on which Mike Smith shows up.

Oh, c'mon. Team USA may not have the strongest possible squad they could, but on paper it's still very much on level with both Finland and Slovakia. Russia may be too much, though. But they aren't unbeatable either, for any of those three.

    1. Russia: Undefeated since 2011 -- any other questions?
    2. Canada: To Europeans, our Ruff style will be highly offensive
    3. Sweden: Unlike Justin Bieber's tour bus, we won't stink in Stockholm
    4. Czech Rep.: What, no love for the defending bronze medal champions?
    5. Slovakia: Šatan and Stümpel aren't old, they're experienced
    6. United States: Time to prove everyone wrong, Joe
    7. Finland: Seriously, dude, we play for Finland! Now let us in!
    8. Norway: If Thor Heyerdahl rafted across the Pacific, we can make the top eight
    9. Switzerland: Whatever, Norway
    10. Germany: Our "Hoff" skates better than the one on Baywatch
    11. Denmark: It's our 10-year anniversary...but it still feels like the first time
    12. Latvia: Sochi, baby! Bang that drum!
    13. France: Philippe Bozon, thank you for procreating
    14. Belarus: Can't get relegated. Best.Format.Ever.
    15. Austria: Sochi, baby! Eat that Sacher Torte!
    16. Slovenia: Sochi, baby! Um...this is silly, we have a tournament to play here

Using Sochi, baby! three times is lame. Much like the puns in our draft today.

Potentially if Belarus finish last in the Stockholm group...and whoever finish second last in Stockholm group has more points than two teams in the Helsinki group, those two teams will relegate. But it is very unlikely I guess.

I think Ben Bishop is far and away a better goalie than Mike Smith, but that's just my 2 cents.

I'd put SIMON MOSER over LUCA CUNTI.

SIMPSON is not using THIBAUT MONNET (tOP scorer ZSC) and DARIO BURGLER (Top scorer DAVOS).
Probably for two reasons: we have no injuries thanks God and DIAZ and BRUNNER COULD enter
rosters as last 2 licences if lights out for Wings and Habs.

Not that these rankings matter one iota but how is it the US is ranked ahead of Canada?
Canada officially has a loss but technically didn't lose a game...just a shootout.

Well this sucks but Girgensons is suspended for the match against Germany because he butt-ended Mezei after he was boarded.

On a light fun side, Latvia team practice...

The US is adding TJ Oshie and Alex Galchenyuk. Hopefully they can provide some secondary scoring to relieve the Moss-Stastny-Smith line.

Secondary? They should be on the top line, with the possible exception of Smith over Galchenyuk.

I actually am a bit worried about adding them, no matter how good they both are.....the American team has good chemistry right now and maybe you don't mess with that if you are Joe Sacco.

If you're worried about chemistry then why would you suggest breaking up what's been the best line on the team? I'd like to see them form another worthwhile offensive line based around the additions.

Am I the only one who thinks these airlifts cheapen the event? It makes the most random sporting competition in the world even more random.

It's not ideal but the whole tournament is adversely effected by player availablity to begin with. The IIHF wants people buying tickets so allowing the best players available to come whenever they can helps towards that cause.

This happens (though less frequently because of much shorter timetables) in lower-division events as well, where a player might only be able to show up for the last 3 games out of 5 of a team's round-robin tournament.

I'm not a fan of it either though in normal circumstances, I'd rather see rosters be set in full before the tournament and teams win or lose with the team they have.

I think it`s not entirely bad. The reality is that SC is played, IIHF and coaches still want to have the strongest possiblle teams. And if it`s only a couple of players... Np i think. This year is little bit different, because NHL lockout. Otherwise only few players from SC second round (only 4 teams, not 8 like this year).

Cagney, it's the age-old debate.........leave a team that's playing well and has obvious chemistry alone, or improve it by adding players who are clearly more talented than what you currently have (aside from Stastny and maybe Smith)?
