    Italy Serie A 2013-2014

Hockey season seems to close very promising in Italy with 3rd title for Asiago in last 4 years and the request by the club to host Continental Cup superfinals.
Some days after the end of Serie A, all clubs agree to turn the page of italian hockey and try to build a strong professional-quality league (see here for more infos: http://eurohockey.com/article/2554-i...ome-elite.html ) At the same time Serie A2 most important clubs decided to migrate in more attractive Inter-national League with Austrian and Slovenian teams.

But while Italian fans were commemorating a new dawn for domestic hockey................

In few days some bad news: Fassa announced team won´t take part in new Elite League due to lack of money and a legal battle with city council about the maintenance costs of rink. Now another main team, Alleghe, declared the club won´t play next season due to lack of sponsorship after the leaving of main sponsor. Besides this, the situation of Bolzano and Milano is still unclear: Bolzano has financial problems, still hasn´t a coach after the firinbg of McCoutcheon and could allign a young roster (team lost defender Crisatiano Borgatello, signed by Val Pusteria and there are rumours about a transfer for captain Alexander Egger to Renon). Milano won´t play in KHL next season as previously planned because seems noone (apart Medvedev and President Ico Migliore) in the city is interesting. Now a big question is open about Milano budget, granted by KHL if team join the league. Team should loose goalie Andrey Raycroft and have a smaller budget.
Relegated Pontebba should be folded (no infos from the club), its name doesn´t appear in next Serie A partgecipants, neither in INL. Ev Bozen and Pergine, the two A2 clubs not partecipating in INL will probably have just junior activities. Vipiteno Broncos decided to join the new Serie A (the only good news so far...)

Bolzano Foxes want (again) to join EBEL http://eurohockey.com/article/2697-b...join-ebel.html while Valpellice made a statement considering to withdraw from league due to economic problems
Very bad moment for italian hockey

I have read some statements saying that the latest EBEL aspiration of HC Bozen is (like all the others before) more a tactical manoever to get some decisions concerning the Italian league in their way. This sounds very plausible to me, Bozen has signalled that they have a hard time financially despite being the historical top dog of Italian hockey and all of a sudden they can raise an EBEL level budget? Doesn't seem very convincing to me.
On the other side I think the league (EBEL) should be really careful concerning Bozen. In contrast to the current EBEL teams any Italian EBEL club despite the current problems of Serie A has a viable domestic alternative and so the committment to an EBEL participation might not be as strong as it should. Furthermore, the signal towards DAB would be disastrous as the Hungarians really wanted to join and were denied (on whatever ground) and now a shaky Italian team should get green light right away in a last minute attempt? Oh yes, Erste Bank is not doing business on the Italian market, no interest from this side either.

Put together, I don't see this happen and that's not even considering that the Italian federation wouldn't allow it anyway (of course, I think that the federation should not have a veto power).

If Bozen had a long term plan towards EBEL and if their request to join was handeled according to a transperent and consistent procedure they would be a good fit in the league though. But as it is the prerequisites for them to join are imho simply not met.

Grande plans seems to be just a plan. Fassa and Alleghe folds, Valpellice in verge too. Bolzano want to join EBEL without secured finances (I guess it will be rejected from EBEL) . Vipiteno want to join in Serie A. Serie A2 joins INL
with 4 teams? Top level hockey in Italy (tyrolian part) gets smaller. I might say it´s the common and normal issue in central/south east european hockey countries is spelled as minor sport and no fundings. Austria and Hungray might have a chance to take a step higher in the developent depending again of sponsor and if federation/clubs have a long term plan.

Laola1.at reports that rumours say that Bozen joining EBEL is most likely not going to happen for the next season due to the lack of time for the necessary preparations.

Not really surprising if it turned out that way. The article furthermore says that HCB shall be a main target of expansion for the 14/15 season.

Perhaps this is good - they will be able to build themselves up more and more organizing before they join (if they do one day). Plus, it helps the Italian league to have an ambitious memeber, I think?

At the Clubs meeting last saturday in Verona, Bolzano announced officially the club is working to join EBEL from next season and that FISG (ITA federation) is examining the request to give a green light. Other clubs said they will put a veto on Bolzano request. But Bolzano said "or EBEL or nothing: in last years we lost sponsors and a lot of fans competing in an unintertesting italian league. EBEL is much better for us"
Clubs also criticized Serie A2 clubs that joining INL "too quick and without a collegial discussion"
The only collective decision was to schedule a meeting "in next days" with FISG to discuss about "the future of hockey"

    Very bad mood

The good news was Valpellice seems to be solved economic problems and should be granted in next Serie A

News are that the "Elite A" (apparently the new name of Serie A) clubs consider sewing FISG and HC Bozen for (allowing) to leave the Italian league. I don't know on which ground the action is based but if there's nothing like a very clear contract the clubs had it must be shaky to ridiculous I'd say.

So Alleghe and Pontebba did end up folding?

How did Fassa manage to survive?

    Spartapraga? Davide? Anybody?

It feels great to be back ;)

Pontebba avoided folding but choose not to partecipate to INL nor Elite.A. Now Pontebba has an amateur team that play in the Austrian Kaertner Liga, along with Italian team Dobbiaco. The youth teams are confirmed.

Alleghe, after a summer struggle, did not manage to get a new main sponsor. The club decided to carry on all the youth teams and sacrificate the senior team.

Fassa survived thanks to an impressive popular movement created mostly on the internet and social networks. A great story, but the results of the team tell the whole story. The point now is: the city council and some other administrations helped the team, granting the funds needed to survive. Will they do the same next year? Or did they rescue the team just because of the Universiadi that are going to be held in Canazei in December? Hosting such an important event with the local team folded wouldn't have been such a good impression...

We somehow lost track of Elite A unfortunately. For those who didn't read it somewhere else, Ritten Sport has won their first championship defeating the eternal win nothing team from Bruneck (HC Pustertal) in the final. The black and yellow wolves from Pustertal simply can't get it done. Instead of coming short to Bozen or Asiago as often in the past this time it was Ritten.

In the meantime Milano Rossoblu has confirmed that neo-manager and ex-coach Adolf Insam will actively work on getting the only Italian metropolitan city hockey club on a bigger stage than the domestic Elite A league. It shall be either KHL or EBEL sometime in the future according to Insam in an interview with sportnews.bz (article in German).

To play pro hockey at all however, problems concerning using the arena have to be solved first by the club and the city of Milan. If not there won't be even Italian top flight hockey in Milan.

Final regular season standings and league scoring leaders can be found here: http://www.eurohockey.com/league/136-elite-a.html

The top two goalies in the league this year were the starting goalies for the two finalists - Chris Mason for SV Renon (Ritten Sport), and Jean-Sebastian Aubin for HC Pustertal (Bruneck/Brunico) Wolfe. Both have legitimate prior NHL experience.

Neither finalist had any of the top 12 point leaders on offense.

SV Renon (Ritten Sport) defeated HC Pustertal (Bruneck/Brunico) Wolfe 4 game to 2 in the finals.

Here is a 10 minute HD video showing highlights of the series clinching win and celebration with the championship trophy afterwards.
