How professional. It seems like another "I played in the NHL once so I am god" situations. They should get over themselves! He's getting paid to play hockey all over the world - oh such an hard life he lives :(...

Beybarys Atyrau has somewhat responded to the comments made from Dalton by posting a picture of a note he wrote. Assistant coach Anatoly Khorozov also posted a message from Dalton for the reason he wanted to be let go.

He was also asked that it seems you have been paid your full contract and he has acknowledge the club has paid him everything they owned. So I dont exactly know what he is going on about the President taking 30%.

    Gareth, Starkovs -

I don't think that is his attitude. It seems to me that he (and/or his family) was simply unhappy in Kazakhstan, and/or didn't feel safe there for whatever the reasons might be. He also complained about an arbitrary taking of 30% of his salary. He also complained about the way the club treated him and other imports.

He asked to be released from his contract on mutual consent.

Having been an attorney for seventeen years, I believe that there were behind the scenes negotiations, whereby he dropped his claims over wrongfully withheld money in exchange for a release from his contract consented to by the club (i.e., "based on mutual consent"). The handwritten note seems to be crafted as a part of that. (As an aside, a note like that would not serve to be binding as a formal legal release in New York, for example, but I have no idea as to whether an informal note like that would be binding under Kazakh law).

Yeah I understand that culture shock and other suck things can kick in and make it a bad time for somebody and their family. I just get annoyed at the fact that. These people are extremely lucky to be traveling the world, playing hockey (or any athlete) for a living. Then they decide to go somewhere that is clearly going to be totally different from what they are used to - then they just bad mouth it because they don't like how something is run or how that system is kinda thing.

On another note, it might just be Google translate fault but some of the comments from the fans are so funny!

I don't disagree with what you are saying there. As with most things, I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

well, apparently a similar way to leave Kazakhstan was adopted also by Canadian Sylvain Dufresne. He left Ertis Pavlodar to join Nottingham Panthers. These the words of Ertis coach Julius Penzes about the affair: Dufresne received a salary and fled with the team, didn't said goodbye to anyone and said nothing to anyone, bought plane tickets and flew away, run away from problems, Kazakh hockey do not need such players.

Also Swedish defender Filip Bjork left Arystan, but apparently in a peaceful way..

One is an aberration, two is a coincidence, three is a forming trend... We'll see if anything else comes out of there, but usually when you have multiple people saying roughly the same thing, the saying goes: "where there's smoke, you'll probably find fire"

I'm sure that there is a simple explanation for this, but why doesn't ustinka have an mhl team? They certainly don't have the players to play both VHL and KZ hockey?

Even though its been known to everybody for the longest time now unless you were one of those people holding out for one of the most amazing comeback stories of all time, Torpedo can no longer make the play-offs. Torpedo new goal can be to atleast get on the board, they will have 13 matches to get something, anything, without finishing the season with 0 points. For everybody else though.....well, really for HK Astana, they still have a chance as they pull within of point of Almaty, who Astana can pass tomorrow.

Kokshetau and Pavlodar, they have clinched their spots, being the only two to do so, Temirtau is a few match days away from doing it.

Very cool find, WHawks! Thanks for sharing that.

Mike is.......a bit harsh in his assessment. How much is true and how much is his personal perception?

Can't speak too directly on Kazakhstan, haven't been there but I may be able to shed some possible light.

Soiled toilet paper was thrown into the garbage cans, not the toilet.
This is common in Asia. In many places, the plumbing isn't exactly up to western standards and would clog and backup if you put the TP in the crapper. Definately true for China, its even on wikitravel.
Every vehicle in Atyrau was a potential taxicab with hordes of drivers jostling with each other to give you a drive.
He won't want to play in Thailand with the 3-wheeled tuk tuk's doing the same thing. Again, its not an uncommon sight in Asia for unofficial taxis to wait at transportation hubs around any city. Sometimes, it might be your only choice in the evening when buses stop running.
The grocery store close to the apartments continuously tried to overcharge all of the imported players and expats living in the area. I caught them overcharging me and illustrated to them that the products in my bag did not add up to what was on the receipt.
On the Silk Way, it was normal to negotiate prices, as I understand, its still par for the course in Central Asia. Of course, if he didn't look for a different store with clearly listed prices or bar code scanners, he'd only have himself to blame.
Seriously, I think smiling was a crime in Kazakhstan. Nobody ever smiled there.
Perhaps linked to the Soviet times? I have close friends from Blagoveshchensk, Krasnoyarsk, and Moscow in Russia who have mentioned before that unless you have a special reason for being happy, its a bit odd to smile for no apparent reason; its something an escaped lunatic would do.
Oh, and all injuries and sicknesses were dealt with by administering the magic needle or IV drip.
Mike won't want to travel in China with diarrhea, vomitting, or the common cold because that's every 'western' hospital's solution. You don't even want to know what the traditional ones use.

I found his comments interesting but at the same time, I also find some of them to be simply him complaining, cultural differences or just a little silly. Some of the things he brings up I could understand happening and some not so clean behind the scenes things happening, the one that didnt make any sense at all to me was the passport story. Im trying to figure out who the players are, Atyrau has 3 Kazakhs on the roster, all three of them are Kazakh born, have played on the national club and have played there growing up. So, lets try the Russians on the rosters who could have fake passports, all of them have played in Atyrau besides Vishnyakov for multiple seasons, one of them even invited their brother to come and join him in the club. The only person I would know of who holds both passports who has recently left the club is Moshkarev but Danton wouldnt know him and he stayed in Kazakhstan, just with a different club.

My main problem with Danton story, regardless of what is true or not, is him painting the entire country with such a broad brush on something that has/hasnt happened to him on one certain club in one city. He has no knowledge of what its like to play for Astana in KHL, Karaganda in VHL or any of the other clubs in the league. Just looking at foreigners (besides Latvians) that I like to follow and catch up on, O'Connor in Kokshetau has never said anything negative during his two seasons there, he even signed a 3 year deal with the club. Yes, he loves to point out the cultural differences but he more or less embraces them, just something along the way. His team Belanger also appears to be having a great time along with his girlfriend/wife.

You could say if you wanted they are not brave enough to speak up or just Danton just had a bad time, foreigners will come and go, some will enjoy it, some will hate it, all part of life.

Yeah the conclusion I came to was that the contractual issues he had with the team, sort of added to the frustration with these little cultural things, that you could probably learn to deal with being in THEIR country if you weren't already pissed of with the way you were being treated professionally (or lack of prof.).
I think it all just became too much in the end.

I agree that his writing is pretty unfair, trying to paint all of Kazahk and their hockey for instance under the same circumstances. As Starkovs points out, O'Connor doesn't complain. I've seen him mention some of the differences, and that's all he has done, mention them! What do these people expect when they go chasing hockey money all around the world? If they want "Western world" standards they should stick to Germany etc where they won't be too shocked that, wait, not every country is the same :D

You can see the same problem in all these story's that surface - moaning about training time and money. I think they should get over it. I work 12 hours per night for a lot less money then $8,000 per month for example! Yet he is complaining he has to do 10 hour training sessions? Poor guy! Thought he plays hockey for the love of the game? Guess not.

By mutural agreement between the two clubs, Beybarys will transfer their home matches against Arlan Kokshetau on 3-4.February to Kokshetau due to Atyrau airport being temporally closed.
