Latvia Latvia - News and Discussions 2014/2015

Meeting was held this afternoon and much like last season, the league has some hope of growing and maybe, just maybe, for the first time will have more than 10 clubs in the league. Clubs for this season who have interest to join the league are...

    *HS Rīga/Prizma
    *HK Kurbads
    *HK Zemgale/LLU
    *HK Ozolnieki/MONARCH
    *HK Dinamo/Juniors
    *HK Daugavpils
    *SK Rīga '97
    *HK Liepāja
    *HK Tukums
    *Ogre/Juniors
    *Jūrmalas HASC
    *Mogo.lv (former SMScredit)

Now just becomes the question of which clubs are really serious about joining because last year I was very opitimisic and felt a little left down after we ended up with 6 (though the season made me feel better.) In turn though, it is great to see that the Tukums club wasnt just a one off thing, so perhaps this season they finally join, having Liepāja back, in whatever form is always great to see. At the end, I really, really, really hope all 12 are there in the end but we shall see.

League is suppose to kick off on 6.September and will run until the end of March, the LHF will draw up the calendar and format of the league later when they know all clubs who will be taking part.

League Champions Rīga/Prizma will represent Latvia in the Continental Cup.

HK Kurbads is loading up on some nice talent this off-season, just picked up Macijevskis, D.Straupe and Melders from Prizma, two of their top 5 point scorers during the regular season and all three were in the top 10 during the play-offs (Melders was the low man.) Žabotinskis is coming over from Ozolnieki, Zeltiņš returns from the Netherlands on a rather productive season for a very bad club, Zembergs is back from Scotland and J.Straupe from Ukraine.
Add some experience and skill to an already talented club, should be another great season watching them.

They havent said which arena they would use, however, I really, really hope they do use MSL. Selfish reason would be super easy for me to attend every match but also because its unique and would be a great home ice advantage for them. However, I kind of have doubts the LHF would like it during the winter so would probably use inbox.

HK Kurbads has signed a contract with Rodrigo Laviņš.

Regardless of his age, its still pretty cool to see Kurbads go after him and get him. Now I just need Jūrmala to really join the league and sign Reķis, Saviels is still a free agent, might as well go after both Bukarts.

HK Liepāja has signed contracts with some of their former players, Toms Tiļļa returns from spending time with Prizma and Bayreuth in the Oberliga, we pretty much knew Bruno Zabis would be here and then Mārtiņš Gipters.

As well, Lauris Bajaruns has joined the club in training camp.

They are building up a pretty nice club but we kind of knew they would if they could bring back some of the former players.

HK Liepāja played another test match, this time against Toros Neftekamsk losing 2:5 with Gipters and Ljubobratets scoring. Not a bad result for them, respectable.

As well, Reinis Repšs and Reinis Petkus will be their goalkeepers.

HK Zemgale had their meeting today, not giving away too much information. However, we do know that Jevgeņijs Linkevičs will be returning as the clubs head coach and the club has lost some of its key players, mainly those to return home to Liepāja. Ozollapa should the club is still looking for additional financial support but should remain about the same as last season.

Zemgale will begin things tomorrow so within a week or so we should begin to see who they are starting the season with. If the league really is starting with all 12 clubs, it will be fun to see the bidding between clubs to get certain players.

Tickets usually cost €15/20 and upwards depending on the seats but Starkovs will know more.

The LHF have announced seven clubs have filed their application for the league, those seven being...

    *HS Rīga/Prizma
    *HK Kurbads
    *HK Zemgale/LLU
    *HK Liepāja
    *Jūrmalas HASC
    *Mogo.lv
    *Ogre/Sāga97

Of the clubs missing from last season is Dinamo Juniors, Ozolnieki/MONARCH and Daugavpils. So some slight disappointment, I never believed we would get the full 12 but no Ozolnieki is a little sad, hopefully they can change things around and do play this season. I really want to know the reason for no DJ, the LHF doesnt know the answer. Im a little surprised SK Rīga isnt here, if I remember correctly, the LHF banned its clubs from playing in foreign leagues besides Dinamo and HK Rīga, guess they will just play in the U-20 league, Tukums would of been nice as well.

On the plus side....JŪRMALA!!!! Haha Serious plus side is that the battle between Kurbads, Prizma and Liepāja should be fantastic, with question marks around Mogo and Zemgale, some surprised hopefully in Jūrmala and Ogre.

Sad that Dinamo Juniors won't be there, but I can understand it if they are playing a full MHL schedule.

Losing Ozolnieki is a terrible blow, and no Daugavpils is awful also. Strange that SK Riga isn't represented in at least some fashion, given the multitude of different clubs it ices.

Juniors doesnt compete in the MHL.

As well, this isnt the final list, some changes can still be made. I kind of get the feeling that the LHF wouldnt of mentioned that if somebody still wasnt looking to join but needed a little extra time...or it could go the other way, much rather believe they are waiting on an 8th club.

Didn't Dinamo Juniors compete in MHL-B as well as the Latvian league in the past?

No, DJ only competed in the Latvian League, HK Juniors use to do both of the leagues. Only Prizma last season was doing both before they withdrew from the MHL.

Today at the Directorate meeting, we learned there was no club changes to the league, still the same seven clubs. However, pending the calendar from the LHF, the league will play at 30 match regular season with it starting on 6.September and running until 31.March.

We also learned there will be a 1.Līga this year which will have U-18, U-20 and a few older players who dont compete in the higher league. This league will consist of six or seven clubs, those clubs being
    *Prizma/Pārdaugava
    *HK Valmiera
    *HK Tukums
    *HK Liepāja
    *HS Rīga '98
    *HK Daugavpils
    *Jelgavas LSS (uncertain)

If the league is played with just the six clubs, then it will have a 24 match calendar, if Jelgava does join, then the league will be played at a 30 match calendar. Either way, the top 4 clubs in the league will make the play-offs in which the series will be a Best of 3 to declare the Champion.
It is currently planned that the league will be played on Sundays and will begin on 14.September.

    19.8

    HK Liepāja - Beybarys Atyrau (KAZ) 3:4 (1:1, 1:2, 1:1)
    Liepājā: Razmuss, Freijs, Gipters
    Atyrau: Vilkoits, Kachulin, Kralj, Tauriņš

    Petkuss (Repšs), Aniņš-Brūders Gipters-Liepiņš Ozols-Leščovs Freimanis-Ļubobratecs Pujāts-Tiļļa-Jasjonis Bajaruns-Zabis-Žučkovs Hodzko-Planics-Freijs Daņilovs-Rasmuss-Propošins

Without fulling knowing what roster Beybarys has brought, though given who scored for them and who assisted, they did bring basically their full line-up, its impressive Liepāja has kept up with them. My hopes and excitement for this season keeps growing.

There is something....likeable about Liepāja now, just dont know what exactly. :P

Three tough losses against KHL, VHL and Kazakh league competition......all pro teams. Is Liepaja technically an amateur team, or is it a semipro club?

They lost four times, twice to Beybarys and they played Atlanty, its the MHL club. Like other clubs here, Liepāja budget is small so we can only assume that the top players within the club are the ones who get any kind of money.

Ah, OK. Still, that's pretty tough competition. The VHL and Kazakh clubs are full time pros, and the MHL is one of the world's top junior circuits.

That's what I figured. I was searching around for their games vs. Beibarys, Toros and Atlanty.
