The Henrich brothers aren't playing with Coventry? Why not? Adam was one of the very top EIHL players and Michael was a point per game player.

Not sure if anyone was aware of this, but the Hull Stingrays played a pair of games against EPL side Peterborough Phantoms on August 30th and September 3rd.

Hull was crushed 6-3 by their EPL opponents in the first game, but rallied to win the second game 4-0 in convincing fashion.

I've never been aware of EIHL clubs playing against EPL clubs before.

I didn't know about that one! Interesting that they are evenly matched. Shows the kind of Budget Hull are working with.

Coventry haven't said anything, so everything is speculation. But, the most common opinion is that they have priced themselves out of the market. Particularly given the strength of the pound against the dollar just now, that would certainly make sense. This season in the EIHL is going to be about depth, not superstars.

To be fair to Hull, they were already short benched as some of their imports hadn't arrived by the time of the game, and one had only arrived in the country that morning. Turcotte was thrown out half way through the game, their coach was given a 10-minute misconduct and Chartrain had to leave the game early with a cut to his head. By the end of the game, Hull were playing with just five forwards...

It's still a good result for Peterborough, but there is a story behind it.

This is proving to be a very controversial game.

Edinburgh's Emmerson was given a boarding penalty in the first minute of the game. Although he was only given a two-minute minor on the play, the victim, Kevin Phillips, didn't return to the game and was reported to be suffering from a concussion. As a result of the injury, the play is automatically reviewed by the league's disciplinary committee.

League rules state that all teams must supply a video of the whole game to support these reviews. In this case, the video from Edinburgh is missing the start of the game and so this hit couldn't be reviewed. The response from the league is to ban Emmerson for 10 games and fine his club £1000. They have made it clear that the size of the punishment is because a minor penalty was assessed on the play and Emmerson was therefore guilty and because Edinburgh could not supply the video.

To put that ban into context, Sheffield's Mark Thomas was given a one-game ban for a very similar hit to Fife's Danny Stewart (VIDEO).

Not surprisingly, Capitals have made it clear that they will appeal.

...maybe they can bring the video to the appeal.

Lets be honest if this was a young fringe player just out of SNL doing this would the ban be the same I doubt it. I appreciate there is a lot of social media chatter, marketing and ticket sales about big physical players that have just joined the league and so they have a reputation but surely the officials need to treat each player in the same manner in terms of penalties. In terms of the camera stuff okay maybe the club should be penalised but I would like to know where that £1000 goes to. They have set a big precedent now so if a hit happens and the camera doesn't catch it even if it is still filming elsewhere on the ice then a 10 game ban is automatic even if the official on the night has made a call. Unless they start asking teams to get at least 3 or 4 cameras so everything on ice can be captured then I don't see how this will work if they intend to be fair and consistent. Not saying there can't be any ban but the ref seen the incident and called it and while a punishment for having no functioning cameras at that time might be reasonable a ten game ban is just playing up to the players reputation rather than evidence and facts.

The cost of the appeal is £2,000 even if successful, the corruption is unreal.

Careful, that is not what this punishment is about. The EIHL accept that cameras don't see everything. But, the rules state that a video must be supplied that covers the whole game. In this case, Capitals were not able to supply a video from any angle that covered the opening minutes of the game. It is for that reason alone that they are being punished by the £1000 fine and why Emmerson's ban has been set so severe.

It's not clear whether the EIHL use the IIHF or the EIHA rules here. However, what is clear is that Emmerson's punishment has to be upgraded according to the rules. Since he received a two-minute minor on the play, the referee has already confirmed that an offence took place. Since Phillips was injured as a result of that offence, then Emmerson must be given either a 5+Game (IIHF rules) or a Match (EIHA In-House rules).

I fully understand that the league want to set a higher level of punishment on Emmerson. After all, you could argue that a team sees the video evidence, realises that it is very damming and so decides to "lose" the video in the hope that his punishment isn't as severe. Not to say that is what Edinburgh have done here, but the concept of maximum ban through refusal to submit evidence is not without precedent. For example, a refusal to submit to an anti-doping agency test is an automatic non-negative result and two-year ban (for a first offence).

It's seems clear that, should the video have been supplied, Emmerson would have got a one match ban for this. I fully understand that the EIHL want to make that bigger to remove the temptation for teams to "lose" damming evidence. But, the level they upgrade to has to be proportionate to be justified. And that's why I have an issue with what they have done here.

What would Emmerson have had to do to get a 10-match ban for boarding? I'm pretty sure that it would have been so bad that there is no way that even the most incompetent of referees would only have seen it as a two-minute minor on the night. I'm also pretty sure that it would have been followed up a string of roughing penalties as the victim's team took retribution. If the EIHL had made this a three match ban, I'd have supported them. But, to go for a ten-match ban just makes them look ridiculous.

Again, due to the ongoing repairs at Motorpoint, Sheffields home match against Belfast will be moved over to Ice Sheffield. As a result of another match being moved over, Sheffields 4.March meeting with Braehead has been moved to Motorpoint.

I have never seen a club sell Arena season tickets before.

Strange, I've never seen that either. It will be because of them splitting games between the two venues anyway. I guess the season ticket buyers don't want their games covered in the lesser IceSheffield!

The 10 match ban for Edinburgh Capitals Riley Emmerson has now been reduced to 3 matches after the club has provided written statements regarding the missing video footage.

Since Emmerson has already served three of those matches, he is free to return to the line-up tonight as Edinburgh takes on Cardiff.

It is for that reason alone that they are being punished by the £1000 fine and why Emmerson's ban has been set so severe.

    Graham.

Scott Neil in an interview stated he had been assured the suspension was completely separate from the camera incident. While video footage would have completely exonerated Emmerson the league said that not catching the incident on camera had no influence on the ban. The club to be fair have accept the £1000 fine and unfortunately technical problems can happen just look at Sheffield's ice problems for an example of that. If the league had said the ban was extended because there was no footage I could understand it a bit more but the ref has made a call so by doing so he or his linesman seen the incident. Yes ideally they should be able to review incident later but 10 games was crazy. There is a £2000 additional fine for anyone that wants to appeal Caps had to pay this and despite a successful appeal the league have pocketed it and no real statement as to where or to who this money goes.

As I said if it had been a fringe player just up from SNL this would not happen this is just based on Riley' s reputation in US Minors. Whereas you have Jeff Hutchins at Dundee with cheap shots just about every game but he has played with about half the teams in the league and played with GB so seems to get away with it and reputation less publisised. Not trying to say foul play but more that if your new to the league you seem to not be given benefit of doubt and officials seem to not take not of serial offenders. I think they spend more time watching youtube footage from 3 or 4 years ago than what is going on in their own league. Just my opinion.

I think this is PR by the league to justify reducing the ban so drastically. But, their statement when they announced the ban was (emphasis added by me):

Edinburgh have been fined £1,000 for failure to supply the matchnight footage required and, as a result, Emmerson will be banned for 10 matches.

If the matchnight footage or any Elite League-approved information can be supplied, the Department of Player Safety will take this into consideration and further review this incident.
I personally don't see how this can in any way be taken as a conscious position of "you didn't provide the evidence, therefore we're assuming the worst".

In their statement announcing the reduction, they state:

Edinburgh provided the committee with written statements regarding the missing video footage and have shown it was because of technical issues.

The appeals committee came to the conclusion that the lack of footage was down to those technical issues, which Edinburgh has resolved to stop these occurring again.

The committee also took into account the new evidence regarding the severity of the injury sustained by Belfast Giants defenceman Kevin Phillips, after he played in games last weekend.
The majority of that press release is about the video evidence. In the third paragraph, the use of the word "also" (again, my emphasis in the quote) surely means that the lack of serious injury to Phillips was a factor in the reduction, but not the major one?

I agree that technical problems can happen, but I think your comparison with Sheffield is unfair. All teams are tenants of the building they play in and so have no control over those technical problems. They are in control of providing the video evidence.

    To be fair...

Head coach Gerad Adams said "we are delighted to be able to sign Ben. We appreciate him making himself available to us whilst we are shorthanded with the injuries that we presently have. I will be keeping hold of Ben for as long as I can but expect him to be moving back to Europe very shortly as he already has considerable interest from other sides over there.
It's clearly a stop-gap for the guy to allow him to play while he looks for a new team. It's not as if his exit from Kazakhstan was his choice or something that he will have seen coming and been able to prepare for.
