Nice video, great memories....
Weeks after the biggest humiliation in Greek Ice Hockey history and the president of the Hellenic Ice Sports Federation, Christos Chatziathanasiou, is continuing his old tricks, fixing games on paper to show the IIHF and the Greek Ministry of Sports that he actually has an active ice hockey program. Many have said about the millions that he has received from the Greek Ministry of Sports during the past years and the fact that he has used them for “other” purposes. Just a few days ago, an official document was uploaded in the blog named: “fight against corruption in ice sports” – http://diafthorapagodromies.blogspot.com that made everyone wonder.
The document is in Greek:
How is this person STILL the president and why isn’t this person in jail? This document was send to the Ministry of Sports in February 2007. It starts off by saying that the Greek Federation received 420.000 Euros in funding in 2005 but only got 280.000 Euros in 2006. Then he goes on to say that he needs 500.000 Euros in 2007 for the Olympic Training prior to the 2010 Olympics (note: The Hellenic Ice Sports Federation did not send ANYONE to the Olympics, even though it is a federation of 5 winter sports). Also he needs this money to send the Men’s National Team to the 2007 IIHF World Championships DivIII that will be held in Ireland!!!! As everyone knows, Greece did not participate in the 2007 WC. Nor was Greece eligible to participate. They only got accepted back in the IIHF family in September of 2008!
So the president Mr. Chatziathanasiou, basically requested funds by the Greek Ministry of Sports for a tournament that his Men’s National Team was not even participating!!!!!! Talk about corruption. Then people wonder why Greece is in such bad financial state!
I'm pretty tired of all these smaller and closed rinks all over the country,
Can we all agree that Greece has none full-size Olympic Rink (or close to the required dimensions :-)
Please any comments on that?, or is there more full-size Olympic Rinks that I don't know? :-) ??????? let us finally find that out :-)
Christos Chatziathanasiou, the President of the Greek ice Sports Federation passed away on october 15, 2011 at the age of 60:
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Greek Ice Hockey following the death of Mr. Chatziathanasiou.
Any new developments since the death of the president?
Following the sudden death of the president of the Hellenic Ice Sports Federation (HISF) and the resignations of important council members, it was imperative that elections needed to be held.
The new members of the Board of Directors are:
President: George Markouizos, Vice Presidents: Phaidon Kaloterakis and Dimitris Kalyvas, General Secretary: Michael Syrellis, Deputy Gen. Secr.: George Lianos, Treasurer: Elias Karidis and Deputy Treasurer: George Gkelntis.
Responsible for all matters of ice hockey in Greece is Dimitris Kalyvas.
And a very strong figure representing ice hockey in the winter sports federation. Hopefully this could lead to a "revival of the revival", and a continuation of all the progress that was made up until the falling out last year.
A new hockey club was created inside sport Club Panserraikos with the goal to partecipate in next Greek League (???) and Bulgarian BAHL
Here the interview with founder translated by google:
Is there a Greak championship in 2012? According to iihf last year Aris Saloniki has won?!
RIP Pavol Demitra, Karel Rachunek, Robert Dietrich and all the other Loko players and staff that died Sept. 7 2011 !
It's very quiet on the Greek ice hockey front. News is hard to come by. Can't find any mentions of a Greek Ice Hockey Championships anywhere. As for the national team, the only news is that they are asking for donations at www.icehockey.gr in order to be able to make the World Championships in Turkey, which start in 2 weeks.
Can somebody from Greece shed some light on the situation there?
It's definite that there won't be a championship for 2012. It was supposed to start in early January but the first match got cancelled because the ice rink did not have official permission to accomodate competitive sport games which is only logical concidering it's only 600 square meters and doesn't even meet the basic IIHF standards. It's a recreational ice rink not suitable for hockey by any means. Moreover one of the teams announced that they wouldn't be participating in the championships anyway blaming the Hellenic Ice Hockey Federation for years of funds mismanagement , incompetence in organizing the championship and training schedule properly and shady practices. We don't even know if the national team is going to make it to the World Championships. There is no way they'll find a sponsorship in time meaning that the players will have to travel and compete in Turkey with their own expenses.I'm pretty sure that Greece won't participate in the World Championships and i'm damn sure as hell that HISF will announce it at the last moment ridiculing our country and putting IIHF in a tough spot. That's the blunt truth my friend and you ain't gonna get it from anybody else.
If Greece wants to make it anywhere they need experienced players. Call up Teddy Kyres from Montreal he can give Greece a birth in the IIHF on his own.
Secondly, Greece is already a IIHF member, and they came second in the IIHF World Championship Division III Qualifying tournament earlier and earned a birth in the Division III tournament to be played in the spring.
Lastly, I highly doubt Kyres is eligible under IIHF regulations to play for the Greek national team.
Even if Kyres was eligible, looking at his stats although he may be the best player i'd hardly say he could carry the whole team.
That is the Athens Heart Ice Rink, which does not meet IIHF standards. The last Greek Ice Hockey championships were held at that ice rink.
There is also the Paradise Ice Rink in Thessaloniki, but is not open all the time.
Hopefully it is. According to the link above the Hellenic Championships in four categories will be held between February 4, 2017 - April 30, 2017. The games will be held at the two existing ice rinks in the country.
From what I understand in 2015 the HISF (Hellenic Ice Sports Federation) has been absorbed by EOXA (Hellenic Federation of Winter Sports). This federation is now in charge of Ice Hockey in Greece. They are also the ones organizing the above mentioned Panhellenic Championships.
Perhaps somebody from Greece can provide more details.
