FYI, KalPa's home ice is these days called "Data Group Areena". They just change their venue sponsor more often than I change my socks.

I'm talking about ones I put on my feet.

For the clubs 70th anniversary, Kärpät Oulu will use the clubs traditional logo for the season.

The current Champions from the Mestis, Jukurit, have been granted permission to join Liiga in the 16/17 season. This now means, if Jukurit defend their title in Mestis this season, nobody will be promoted in the 17/18 season.

They couldn't get Jokerit back, so they had to take Jukurit instead...

To be exact, Jukurit will be the last team added to Liiga in a while, no matter what happens in Mestis this season, or the coming seasons. The league will remain closed at least 'til 18/19 season. However, Liiga is interested in seeing how they could develop Mestis to a stage where it would have a handful of teams that could realistically challenge the Liiga teams and allow the return for qualification through actual play sometime in the future.

Ok great, I was wondering when they would finally shut this down but hopefully they do open the door to a relegation series again. A few clubs in Mestis I would like to see move around and a couple up here I wish would go down.

Can any of our Finnish members, or anyone who follows Liiga regularly, give us an update on this season so far?

Swedish website hockeysverige.se reports that company operating Espoo Blues has filed for bankruptcy.

The team goaltender, Christian Engstrand has via SMS informed that the team will play the games this weekend and we'll have to see what happens after that.

Wow.... we've seen this in lower leagues, but a midseason potential folding of a major club in a top league is a BIG development.
All the more so since the club is still active in Champions League, what will happen with this?

Disaster for Liiga. Less so for the Champions League, but still not good. Really sad.

Finnish Hufvudstadsbladet writes that Espoo Blues have managed to get money to pay the player's November salaries thanks to a new sponsorship deal. Had they not had managed to pay the salaries by last Friday the players would be free to break their contracts.

They are still working on how to expand their financing to avoid the bankruptcy requests filed by the Finnish tax authorities and a pension fund.

While most Blues players stayed on board and have received their overdue salaries, one player elected to break off and signed a contract offer from Kärpät. Said player was none other than Kim Hirschovits, Blues' captain #1 center and leading scorer.

It's obviously a huge dent for them, so while their financial woes are slowly resolving, they didn't walk off of it with their feet dry.

As a continuation from November, let it be said that Blues' financial woes finally led to a rather unexpected and unheard of result (at least in Finnish hockey): The club has gone completely bankrupt.

This was revealed roughly a month ago, and since then people have been waiting with bated breath whether they could muster together the funds required to pay their debts, and carry on as a Liiga team. Someone willing to help was the club's former owner, millionaire businessman Jussi Salonoja, who publicly stated his willingness to save the club as long as Blues' outstanding debt would not cross certain pain threshold.

Today it was revealed that the amount of said debt is more than double of what Salonoja was willing to pay. By this decision, the club has no means to recover and has effectively ceased to exist. They will not play in Liiga next season. Salonoja stated that he still intends to help hockey in Espoo by establishing a brand new club, that is, however, going to start its climb back to light either from Mestis or Suomi-Sarja.

    -----

In other news, the Liiga semifinals have just been completed. In one side, regular season winner HIFK met JYP and finally beat them with relatively little effort in 4-2 series. The other side was what you might call a classic: Kärpät vs. Tappara, the same pair that had met in the finals two preceding summers, with Kärpät being better both times. But now it was Tappara's turn for payback. After exhilirating 4-3 series complete with three overtime games, Tappara finally beat their biggest demon and advanced to the finals.

And the ultimate MVP and figure of the Kärpät-Tappara series: Patrik Laine. The 17-year-old wunderkind potted a 6+2 score over those seven games (and 8+2 in the playoffs overall), effectively dragging his team into the finals almost all by himself. In fact, every time the game advanced into the overtime, Tappara was trailing behind... and it was him who potted the tying goal. Twice at the final seconds of regulation.

The Liiga final series HIFK-Tappara begin on Friday 15th April. If you have the means, tune in, if only to catch a glimpse of the kid who may yet seriously challenge the consensus 1st overall pick Auston Matthews in this year's NHL entry draft.

I was talking with some Espoo fans at work last weekend and they were very happy to blame Jokerit leaving Liiga for their team going bankrupt. They said "they've ruined the derbies in the league"

Yeah, no. If a team messes up its financials as badly as Blues did, there's no way anyone should pin it on some other club leaving them in a mess.

That's a pile of garbage. When Salonoja sold the team Rautio and co. everybody were sure that this is the new chapter and finances will be fine, but these owners did everything wrong and now we see the results. Nothing to do with Jokerit IMO.

I guess blaming Jokerit is an easy excuse for them then :D

Are there any plans/rumours about whether another team will take the place of Espoo in Liiga?

Jukurit Mikkeli will be promoted for next season, but they were going to be added even without Blues' bankcruptcy. So Liiga will remain 15 teams strong, but it's hard to call Jukurit a replacement, since there would have been 16 teams otherwise.

Not to mention these things don't happen overnight. Blues not being able to deal with its debts is practically something that was confirmed this week, so no way will they just designate a club to take their place in that time, or even start pondering their options. Maybe we'll hear something once the next season is running, at the earliest.

That being said, if there's going to be a replacement, it's hard to see them veering too far from Espoo, even if it might take a year or two. For a simple reason: Blues may be gone, but their facilities will still be exactly where they are. To have an arena that size and not use it for top level hockey seems unfathomable.

Chances of another KHL team having an interest?

Thanks, Laho. I must admit I had forgotten about the elevation of Jukurit. Had a quick look on their website. Are they building a new arena?

I don't suppose there are many teams left in Mestis who would have the potential finances/facilities/fanbase to support a Liiga team. Maybe Jokipojat might be able to if given a season to prepare?

Definitely agree that professional ice hockey needs to return to Espoo. Its very sad what's happen to Blues (and FC Honka) over the last couple of years.

Hardly. While the size would certainly be enough (draws 7,000) - there are even smaller barns in the KHL - I suspect the geo- and demographical proximity to Jokerit would just be too much. While Greater Moscow area could have even three or four clubs operating at the same time, one will be more than enough for Greater Helsinki. (This is a platitude, really, since more than triple the amount of people live in Greater Moscow area than all of Finland.)

Jukurit did not build a new one, but renovated their current arena to fit Liiga standards.

And I really doubt they'll be interested in adding another club just like that, because a) as the wind blows, some Liiga execs are actually favoring cutting down the amount of teams (might lead to Liiga opening again at some point, and major changes to Mestis, but that's another discussion), and b) if they did add one, they could potentially be looking at not just one, but two clubs coming back to the fold in the coming years.

Like I said, Espoo's arena is too big to be not be used to house a Liiga team, so one day it again will. Additionally, the KHL is still somewhat volatile, so there's no telling if Jokerit would one day realize they're better off back in Liiga. Adding additional teams to replace Blues now would mean we could be looking at a 18-team-league somewhere down the road - and that's waaayyy too much. Well, even 17 teams would be quite a bit - it'd definitely be interesting to see how they'd sort it out if one day the new Espoo team is Liiga worthy and Jokerit have had enough with the KHL.
