Calendar has been published, season will start on 5.September when defending Champions Mogo take on Kurbads. HS Rīga will get their first test on the "road" when they take on Prizma and HASC tries to build off last season by upsetting Zemgale.

Press conference was held today to before start of the season, top six clubs will be making the play-offs. Like the other years, LTV will be broadcasting the Finals as well will do the Finals of the Cup, while sportacentrs will be doing the rest of the matches.

As well as the Cup coming back this season, the All-star match has returned, to be played on 26.December at Volvo SC.

I hate the look of that logo so much and the writing just annoys me. :D Plus, I really, really prefer their jerseys from last year when they used the city coat of arms for the logo. Gave a good reflection of their situation and the city relationship with the club.

I think Liepaja's jerseys are rather nice looking, though I understand Starkov's preference for the city's coat of arms.

Starkovs, you mentioned over in the Latvian 1.Liga thread that HASC and Tukums might merge? What is the story behind that?

We and Tukums co-operate on the youth levels and Fedosejevs says the city of Tukums is more receptive to hockey than Jūrmala. The LHF has confirmed the merge/move, the clubs name has been changed to HASC/HK Tukums and all our matches have been moved away from Majori to Tukums.

Comparing it with last season I can see your problem! Why the hell did they go with generic logo 6 when the city's logo looks MUCH better

Its ok, HASC doesnt really have that much of a connection to the city like our other clubs do or like Liepāja does. I only really followed them because they had some nice prospects and it was cool to see Virslīga matches at MSL.

Tukums is just a short ~20 minute drive down the A10. Or, depending on which part of Jūrmala you start from...for me, Ķemeri station, three stops to Tukums I on the Torņakalns—Tukums II line.

There have been a ton of clubs folding and being born in Latvia the past few years.....who is your club in Virsliga now?

Also, what ever happened to SK Riga (the club that had a million different teams and whose symbol was the crossed keys)?

Ill float around, dont really care much for Mogo or Prizma, so pretty much anybody but them. Not really the biggest fans of Liepāja so I guess if I had to pick just one it would be Zemgale.

I could be wrong but they were under Dinamo and now I believe they just merged in with HS.

I'd go with Kurbads. Just because you can clearly see their management's passion and willingness to develop a great team, plans of building their own arena, some basic marketing - I guess, they are the only ones selling fan attributes at their ice hall. Zemgale would be a close follower, just because of their great PO run last spring.

That was my reason for picking them this season, it was such a great run. Kurbads isnt a bad choice either, I would love to see them win a title.

By the way, why did Liepaja change their jerseys? Has there been any fan reaction for or against the change?

I remember that at the very beginning of the last season they announced a contest for team's logo. So, while they didn't have one, they played with the coat of arms. I hoped that they would get something like FK Liepāja has. I just love those letters. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...epaja_logo.png

    Ivan Glavonjic-two goals :-)

Can you explain me, how the hell Serbian player playing in Latvia? I mean, i suppose that there are no money in this league, especially for youngsters and Glavonjic isnt extra talent.
What is the level of Latvian league. I suppose something like former Slohokej league( Slovenian league) or even stronger. I looked before few years the games in CC in Britain where one Latvian club was exellent....so i really cant compare level....Can you bring some more information on Latvian league....level, is there money or just amateur or farm teams?

    Thanks

HASC is pretty much a sport academy so they probably watched him during the U-20 Championships and thought he may like the better competition. Or, they brought in Rankovic first and he was the one who suggested bringing in Glavonjic.
The general idea among us is that clubs like Kurbads, Mogo and possibly Prizma will pay their players, Zemgale, and Liepāja pay their top players and give some sort of compensation to the rest and finally HASC and Rīga just give out compensation.

The talent level of the league has been improving, like you said, the top clubs can usually compete with the middle tier leagues, last season Liepāja preformed well in their test matches against Kazakh clubs and a VHL club. Though this season they did worse but their roster is also weaker this season. Its not the best way to judge the league but alot of the Latvian players will move onto clubs in Kazakhstan, England and France after playing in the league.
When you have some free time, try to catch some of the matches live, it will give you a pretty good idea of the talent level in the league.

This is my big problem with HASC and it comes from how their goalkeepers are handled. I hated this growing up sharing the net with somebody else, and I dont like the way Surenkin is doing it. If the goal is to find which goalkeeper deserves multiple starts, then that is fine but it doesnt seem thats what he is doing.
Rankovic played the full match against Liepāja...why, even if you believe Furss or Putniņš couldnt change the match, get Rankovic out. Let me forget and not get deflated as Liepāja keeps adding to their score. Then, in the match against Mogo, again, Furss gets the start and stays in the match for all 14 goals, why do this to him. I havent seen much progress from him at his time in HASC, maybe he just doesnt have what it takes to play in Virslīga but letting Mogo or any of the clubs just destroy him isnt going to make him better.

My main point, Rankovic was back in net tonight against Rīga, he played fine, I hope he stays in the net come Tuesday. There needs to be some consistency in net.

    Standing so far

    RkClubGPWOTWOTLLGS:GAPTS
    1 HK Liepāja 12 9 0 0 3 66:37 27
    2 HK Mogo.lv 12 8 1 0 3 58:37 26
    3 HK Kurbads 11 6 1 1 3 61:32 21
    4 HK Prizma 12 6 1 0 5 45:35 20
    5 HS Zemgale/LLU 11 0 1 1 4 40:32 19
    6 HS Riga 13 1 0 1 11 26:72 4
    7 HS Riga99 (ex-HK Tukums) 9 1 0 0 8 26:77 3

HASC Tukums folded due to bankrupcy. Most of it's players went to the second league (1.Liga). The U18 players were taken by HS Riga, creating a second team named HS Riga99. All results of Tukums were converted to the results of HS Riga99. This new formation collected the first victory at the weekend, beating HS Riga. (Quite funny, when your farm team beats you).
Except these two teams, the league is quite balanced, Liepāja and Mogo are better, other three team are on the same level. The last two team is mre like an academy, composed by mostly U20 players.
There are very few foreigner - few Lithuanian; almost all the players are Latvians.

The two most competitive teams of the league this year are MOGO and Kurbads. But, as you can clearly see from the scores, all five teams can clearly fight with each other and have a shot at winning the league.

In the meantime, HASC players that have stayed in Latvian league:

    HK Liepāja: Edgars Beizaks
    HK MOGO: Maksims Furss
HS Riga: Daniels Riekstiņš, Yevgeni Datsyk
HS Riga99: Didzis Ruģelis, Elvis Kaimiņš, Miķelis Pāvelsons, Ritvars Reimanis

Interesting thing with regards to foreigners - there are currently only 3 Lithuanian and 1 Russian players. In the meantime, in 1. Liga there are 5 Lithuanian, 2 Ukrainian and Russian as well as 1 Serbian, Estonian and Belarusian players.

MOGO is desperate to add some offensive depth (they've added Riekstiņš from HS Riga and Popens, who hadn't played for quite a long time), while Kurbads has some trouble in defensive end, as Tribuncovs seems to be away from the team. They've acquired Grundmanis from Prizma.

Oh, and probably the most exciting event for the league - Dinamo Riga recalled Bruno Zabis from Liepaja. He has now played 2 KHL games, has 2 assists. Hopefully he will set an example that it is possible to get noticed while playing in Latvian league also at post-junior age, add a bigger aim for players who didn't really have one anymore. :)

And we have some drama of our own. Daniels Riekstiņš, who once was part of the Latvian U18 team, but is also an MMA fighter, knocked out Vladislavs Balakuns. He now has been suspended till the end of 15/16, and 'partially suspended' for 16/17 as well.

Balakuns has three fractures in his skull, and will be in the hospital for at least a month.

Here is a video of the incident: https://vid.me/vtEK
