First game in SHL for Karlskrona ended with their first loss but fortunately also their first goal. Reports say Färjestad was the dominant team but I believe Karlskrona will find their pace and win a few games here and there.

Do you think that Karlskrona will be relegated?

I think they will have to play a relegation series, but I don't know if they'll relegate. They have changed the relegation system and removed the qualification series. Instead the SHL teams will face two HockeyAllsvenskan teams in best of 7 match series. 7 games is a long series and the SHL teams should have the upper hand.

Malmö defeated Leksand in a best of 7 last year though, so it can be done.

It is early in the season and it will be interesting to see if the started trends will continue. At the top Färjestad has had a better season start than in several years and along with Frölunda is undefeated in regulation time.

At the bottom we find the three newcomers, Rögle, Malmö and Karlskrona, totgether with the reigning champions Växjö who has had a rough start.

While still in the early phases of the season it is interesting to note a small gap opening up between the top 7 teams and the followers. At the top of the table we find Frölunda, Linköping and Brynäs and they are all obviousy in good form.

At the very bottom Karlskrona is struggling and now has 6 straight losses. HV71 is also moving down in the standings and also had 6 straight losses before they managed an OT win in the last round.

Mikael Wikstrand and Ottawa Senators continue to be at odds with each other. According to Aftonbladet the 22-year-old left Ottawa's camp without notifying the team and was hoping to play closer to home this season, having transferred from Frölunda to Färjestad (on loan from Ottawa) after last season.

Mikael Wikstrand has since stated that his brother has leukemia and that he as a result wants to be closer to his family.

In the article Ottawa states that he will not be allowed to play in Sweden this season but that he is more than welcome to join Binghampton in AHL.

Almost half way through the regular season, Frölunda and Skellefteå has pulled away to a comfortable lead. There is not much suggesting that they will suddenly start losing and they have managed 23 and 26 out of a maximum 30 points in the last 10 games. Reigning champions Växjö has also started playing well after a more mediocre season start, racking up 24/30.

Behind the top two the rest of the teams down to place Rögle in 11th place, with no significant gaps opening up.

At the bottom, Karlskrona is still struggling with only one regulation win in 20 games and a paltry 8 points. MODO has double that, but has only managed 6 points in the last 10 games. My feeling is that these two teams can start scouting the top HockeyAllsvenskan teams now, in preparation for the spring time playoffs...

This situation is ridiculous, and you have to think there's more to the story than what has been said in the newspapers. However, I have no idea what that "more" could be.
Why the Senators won't allow the player to play and develop is just nonsensical. You have him under contract and want him to become an NHL player for you, so you.... waste a season of his prime development time? There's an agreement to be made here, but the stubbornness won't allow it to be done.
Why the player didn't think to tell the club about his brother's illness before leaving and going home (apparently he called Sens GM Bryan Murray from the airport) is insane... you sign a contract, with an NHL team, you'll be expected to fulfill it unless you have a DAMN good reason and maybe try to set it up beforehand. This isn't some third-tier league in Russia, where the club will just release you. They'll expect you to be there, and won't take kindly to being left in the dark while you run home.

...it's just been so poorly handled by everyone involved.

As you say Steigs, poorly managed by all parties. It is difficult to understand how Mikael Wikstrand failed to see that signing a contract with an NHL team not only has benifits but also responsibilities. It is equally difficult to understand what upside Ottawa sees to their current stance.

Especially since just this spring the Sens management were touting Wikstrand as "the best prospect outside of the NHL".... now he's the best prospect outside of hockey entirely.

All but half way through the regular season Frölunda and Skelleftå continues to keep a distance to the other teams and it looks like these are the two teams that will continue to go head to head for the regular season win.

Behind the top two it is a fairly evenly distributed group of teams down to HV 71 in 10th place with no major movement in the last rounds.

The bottom four are trailing a bit now with a small gap opening up to reach that coveted playoff-spot. This group includes the three newcomers and MODO who has struggled the last couple of seasons and played qualification games last season. Karlskrona at the very bottom continues to have a hard time racking up wins with only one regulation win in the first 25 games played.

Frölunda and Skellefteå are making this into a two team contest, opening up a large gap to the teams below. Luleå is the only team to match their pace in these last five games with 13 pts that propels them up to 6th place.

At the bottom it looks more and more clear that Modo and Karlskrona will have to face a playoff.

The best team over the past five rounds is rather surprisingly Karlskrona. With 12 points in the last five games they have almost doubled their tally.

Unfortunately the wakeup is probably too late. They are still 16 points behind Malmö in the safe zone with 12 games to go. Modo is also lagging behind Malmö and Rögle and looks likely to join Karlskrona in the qualification games.

Not much has changed in the rest of the table, Skellefteå has replaced Frölunda at the top and Rögle passed Malmö at the bottom. Other than that no changes and the points have been pretty much evenly divided between the teams.

    12 rounds to go...

Skellefteå wins the regular season for the fourth year in a row, a new record for SHL. The last rounds did not offer a lot of drama, the only thing not decided was which team would end up in 7th place and miss a direct spot to the quarter finals. Rögle passed Malmö to become the best team in Skåne. Modo and Karlskrona will have to play qualification series.

I guess Skelleftea will start as fairly warm favourites? Do you think they are stronger or weaker than in previous seasons?

I don't really see who will stop Skellefteå... I believe Djurgården will defeat Brynäs 2-0 but neither of them should be able to steal more than 1 game against Skellefteå. In the semifinals I think we will see Skellefteå against Färjestad with Skellefteå winning 4-2.

On the other half, Frölunda will defeat the winner of Örebro/HV71 quite easily and go on to face Linköping. Here Frölunda will struggle but defeat Linköping 4-3. The final will be tough but Skellefteå should take it.

    My predictions:

    Round of 16:
    Djurgården - Brynäs 2-0
Örebro - HV71 2-1 (could go either way)

    QF:
    Skellefteå - Djurgården 4-1
    Luleå - Färjestad 2-4
    Frölunda - Örebro 4-1
    Linköping - Växjö 4-1

    SF:
    Skellefteå - Färjestad 4-2
    Frölunda - Linköping 4-3

    Finals:
    Skellefteå - Frölunda 4-2
