    Exhibition games

    Slovakia - Czech republic 4:5 (3:1, 1:3, 0:1)
Goals: 4. Matej Tóth (Žiak), 8. Feherváry (Ivan, Liška), 15. Fafrák (Kelemen), 35. Feherváry (Ivan) - 7. Buchtela (Hladoník, Kaut), 23. Hrabík (Machala, Kaut), 39. Machala (Buchtela, Dvořák), 45. Škvrně (Mikyska)

    Slovakia - Sweden 4:2 (2:1, 1:1, 1:0)
    5. M. Roman (Hrehorčák, Krivošík), 6. Havrila (Regenda), 24. Urbánek (Hrehorčák, Žiak), 60. Havrila (M. Ivan, Fehérváry) - 6. Elvenes (Peterson), 25. Peterson (Sylvegard, Liljegren)

In the two exhibition games, the Slovak u18 team confirmed the potential of this age class. In the game against the Czechs the Slovak top line consisting of Milos Roman, Filip Krivosik and Patrik Hrehorcak didn't play and the Czechs were also missing several key players. Against Swedes Slovakia played without top 2017 draft prospect Adam Ruzicka and the Swedes were missing players who are still in play-off.

Game against Sweden was televised by TV 213 yesterday and the Slovak team was on par with the Swedes and maybe even a bit better including in skating which is an aread where our player usually lack behind most other teams. The coach is also using the potential of the players and has them play an all around game unlike the deffense first game that Ernest Bokros has been using with the u20 teams.

It's only a shame that while the D-men and forwards are above average for Slovak standards, the goalies are not quite as exceptional as some in past years. There is also the question how the players will deal with playing in front of a strong home crowd and how they will deal with the pressure of that since most of the Slovak games are aparently sold out.

I'm very surprised by the good attendance so far. It was to be expected for the Slovak games given the name that the 1999 class has a very good name among Slovak fans.

But even the games in the Spisska Nova Ves have been well attended for this level so far.

This result is reminiscent of the infamous 2002 QF match between these two countries.

Canada will be a tough nut to crack for Sweden, I am not overly hopeful of a SF berth this year.

If Canada does not play significantly better than they did against the Finns, I'd say the Swedes chances of winning are pretty good.
Canada has been taking far too many needless penalties right from the start of the tournament and Finland made them pay dearly for that bad habit.
Discipline, or lack thereof, will likely determine the Canadians fate Thursday.

In that case we have two teams that need to improve... Sweden has outshot their opponent in every game, winning the shots against USA 36-29 even though they lost the game 1-5. Sweden is 9th in scoring efficiency with a paltry 4.71 SG%. They have done OK in powerplay I guess, so maybe that can be a life line. Either that or they suddenly start scoring from all their shots... *smile*

Canada's 2017 U18 tournament comes to an ignominious end in the QFs, losing big to Sweden 7-3.
Canada had drawn to within one 3-2 with under six minutes left in the second period.
But, once again, a silly penalty in the final minute of the period on which the Swedes quickly capitalized on and Canafa was down two once more.
Canada opened the third with another penalty and although Sweden did not convert they scored shortly after and the game was effectively over.

Three very close QF games with a heart-breaking end for the Czechs, Slovaks and Swiss.

The Slovak players have won the hearts of the Slovak fans with their offensive play even against the top teams, something that we have not seen since the early 2000s.

The loss hurts right now but many of the players will have two shots for a medal success at the WJCs together with their young coach who has apparently applied to become the coach of the u20s.

And in the end it's not the resut what matters but that as many of these players have successful careers in men's hockey. That's what Slovak hockey needs much more than a medal.
