    2020 Winter Youth Olympics

The women's tournament of the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics got underway yesterday and the men's begins today. The top ten countries based on 2018 and 2019 IIHF rankings are only allowed to enter a men's or women's team, beside the host country Switzerland. In the men's tournament it is the United States, Canada, Russia, Finland, Denmark and Switzerland. In the women's it is Sweden, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Japan and Switzerland.

Also of note, which I'm sure most are aware off, was the introduction of a men's and women's 3-on-3 tournament made up of players from all around the world. Each 3-on-3 tournament consisted of eight teams. Spots in the tournaments were based on a number of factors which is probably easier to link to the really well explained Wikipedia article below. A total of 43 different countries were represented in at least one of the 3-on-3 tournaments. The 3-on-3 tournaments are now finished and make way for the main ice hockey tournaments.

So both main tournaments begin with a preliminary, three teams per group. The Women's got underway yesterday with Sweden and Switzerland both getting wins in shootouts.

    - Sweden 3-2 (SO) Slovakia
    - Czech Republic 0-1 (SO) Switzerland

    Women's Group A
    1. Sweden - 2pts (1 game)
    2. Slovakia - 1pt (1 game)
    3. Germany - 0pts (0 games)

    Women's Group B

    2. Czech Republic - 1pt (1 game)
    3. Japan - 0pts (0 games)
