I haven’t heard about him before. As far as I know he has not participated on any junior national team until now.
Below is a “free” translation of an article by Peter Fredberg in sporten.dk about him:

17-year-old Magnus Leth Nielsen has started a professional career in Lithuania

One of the Danish Ice Hockey Defence talents, 17-year-old Magnus Leth Nielsen, going against the flow.

When other Danish hockey talents are moving to Sweden or North America, the former AaB player has started a professional career in the Russian junior league, MHL, in Vilnius, Lithuania, the southernmost of the three Baltic countries.

-Of course it is a little unorthodox to play in a Russian league and I talked a lot with my family and others about it before I accepted the offer, says Magnus Leth Nielsen to sporten.dk

-I could play in Sweden, but MHL sounded interesting. It's a tough school and a challenge; it was hard to say no to. It is a junior league with strong players from many countries. On our team; HC Baltica, there are players from five nations.

HC Baltica season debut at home with a 5-2 victory over the Moscow-Zelenograd team. Magnus Leth Nielsen began on the fourth line, but played the last two periods on the second line and had an assist on the 3-2 goal.

-The training is tough and serious, and the level is high. Many plays in the league to pursue a career in the KHL, and of course it is also a dream for me, says the young player from North Jutland.

Only 17 years old, Magnus Leth Nielsen, is the youngest player in HC Baltica. He is small for a defender with his 73 kg and 1.78 meters, but he is fast on his skates and very mobile and has great offensive qualities.

-I have adapted well to Vilnius and happy with the many new impressions both on and off the ice. The whole team is staying at a hotel and I share a room with a slovak, he says.

Wow, 4 year deal. I wonder if it's not a bit of an overkill. He is rather young and this is only MHL B.

Then again, if the club is eventually looking to have a senior club playing in the league system it would give him a bit of a leg-up towards getting on that roster, if he's been there that long already.

Well this is a completely different thing then. They should have made it clear the first time around.

Nikolaj Ehlers is off to a strong start in the Swiss Elite Jr. A league with 6 goals and 12 points in 8 games. That seems to be elite production compared to what other players his age have produced in the league.

A reply to cagneys remarks about Nickolaj Ehlers:

He has for some time been one of the most intriguing Danish prospects. His stats may not be fantastic, but taking into consideration, that he has almost always been playing against boys who are older than him, they are impressive.
At the moment he is the only 1996 born player in the top 20 on the high score list for the Swiss Elite Jr. A league, the rest are born 1994-1992.

    With the risk at being flamed by someone with a lot more knowledge about Swiss hockey, I will never the less claim that;
Nikolaj Ehlers (1996 born Danish-”Swiss”) together with Denis Malgin (1997 born Russian-Swiss) and Kevin Fiela (1996 born Check rep.-Swiss) are probably the best prospects in their year group playing in the Swiss junior leagues.

If somebody has seen Nkolaj play, I would appreciate if you could post some comments about him (style, size, strengths etc).

I haave seen him play, he is a fast small forward. He is the best talent born 1996 in Denmark!!
Good stick handling combinated with a great vision, he will become a big star for Denmark hockey, lets see.

Wonder if Ehlers could be in the mix for the WJC-18 in April? He would obviously have to beat out players from the 94/95 class but he’s off to a pretty impressive start and players like N.Jensen and Mikkel Bødker also played at the U-18 level (internationally) when they were 15/16 years old.

The numbers Nikolaj has put up in Elite Junioren A are impressive. Few players have put up the same amount of points in the Danish U20, as a U16 player (Nicklas Jensen is one of them). But I doubt that he will be playing at the WJC-18 this year. The competition is simply too tough. The forwards born 1994 and 1995 are much better that the forwards born 1992 (which allowed Nicklas Jensen to play WJC-18 as a U16 player). But you never know: The U17 4-nation tournament in Fussen in february could be with the participation of Nikolaj, and if he impresses big time there, he could maybe fight his way to the roster.

    Nice list, Marras.

How about Sebastian Ehlers? How good a player is he?

So who of the players listed besides Jensen, would you think has a chance of making the WC team 2012? I'd love to see Patrick Björkstrand get his debut for the Danish Lions this year, but I'm not so sure that'll happen.

Especially considered a player like Mark Mieritz who'm I was thinking before season that he'd probably average around 1 PPG for Esbjerg but he hasn't produced much.

I think it would be a surprise if anyone besides Jensen (assuming Oshawa misses the playoffs and/or Vancouver doesn’t have other plans for him) makes the WC team in May. Injuries could obviously change things, but at this point the roster looks pretty set.

    Johan Milling retires

Danish D-prospect and junior national team player Johan Milling, Copenhagen Hockey has decided to stop playing hockey at a high level.

He has simply lost the desire to play hockey as seen in this link: http://www.hockeyligaen.dk/Nyheder.aspx?docid=11276

This is sad news, but part of life. I had expected him to part of the U20 WJC team in December, but now another will get the chance.

    Nick Sorensen injured

Former Danish prospect Nick Sorensen has been seriously injured. He will be out for the rest of the season. What a shame, I sure hope he will return just as strong as before, even though he will loose most of a year of development.

    Nikolaj Meyer

After the disappointing Malmö defeat against Rögle yesterday it was time for Mr.Madhawk to reflect upon things in the Malmö Allsvenskan team. Among other things he wrote the following about Nikolaj Meyer (google translated from Swedish):

"I can reveal that Malmö was very close to losing Nico for a few weeks ago. He was homesick for Frederikshavn and was very close to giving up Malmo. He is still here, but I do not think he wants run on only J20-hockey. I am totally convinced that he had delivered in the first team. We're talking a raw talent with a devilishly good speed. He can and will most likely play at a really high level (NHL?). But by next year he wants and he will be able to play the A-team hockey. I want to see he passed into Malmö's A-team. Now."

It appears that Meyer is at a crossroad - should he wait perhaps another year for Malmö A-team or leave the club. The coach Strömberg is - according to Malmö fans comments - not keen on using young players. So it will be a tough decision...

NHL Central Scouting - Domestic Preliminary Rankings 2012

    DENMARK - Ones to Watch
    1. Thomas Spelling (1993) - Herning - RW
    2. Kristoffer Lauridsen (1994) - Herning - C
    3. Nicki Kisum (1993) - Copenhagen - LW

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=75394

Spelling is in his second year of draft eligibility, while Lauridsen and Kisum are in their first.

It surprises me that Nikolaj Meyer is not on the list when Spelling is. But isn't it unusual for the scouts to include players who are in their second year of eligibility before the final rankings?

Meyer and Spelling are our best names for a draft pick come June 2012. The 94-class is rather weak compared to both the class of 93 and 95. Neither Christian Chapman nor Dallas Maxwell has lived up to the expectations so far this season. To be fair, Chapman has good stats in the first division.

On a side note: WAUW! Oliver Bjorkstrand is really lighting it up these days. I expect great things from his side.

Rankings are based on domestic leagues only, so Meyer basically counts as a “Swede”. The mid-term rankings might serve as a better indication of wherever Spelling or Meyer have a chance of getting drafted . It’s probably a longshot, but it would be a shame if our 5 year draft streak ends.

As whole, Herning's second line has been pretty impressive and Oliver Bjorkstrand seems to be running away with rookie of the year award.

I am aware of the ranking system but it still confuses me that Spelling is listed on the Danish rankings when Meyer is not on the Swedish list.

I have really liked what I have seen from Spelling and Bjorkstrand in the past two seasons - especially Bjorkstrand who played with so great speed in last year's playoff - but I must say that I was a little doubtful when I saw that Todd's second line consisted of three guys on 19, 18 and 16 respectively. So far, they have proven to be a success and Oliver's 3 point night yesterday makes one hopeful before the upcoming WJC's in Canada.

Considering the results from the tournament in Belarus it’s hard to be optimistic about the chances for staying in the A pool. But perhaps the long lasting camp in December can create miracles though I can’t see why we play Latvia (most likely the toughest rival in the struggle for survival) just a few days before the tournament. Maybe it’s just me, but in soccer that would never happen!
On a side note it should be noticed that it seems like Felix Scheel has made it to the Rögle Allsvenskan team. Not a lot of ice time but anyway a step forward and a good thing for the J20 NT.

Nicklas Jensen will of course make a huge contribution to the team, and Patrick Russell will also make a nice addition (is he struggling with injuries?), but no matter what it will be a big challenge for the young lions.

The defense will be our weakest link. There is no clear starter in the net, and our D-men does not possess the same strength as last year's crop of D-men. Jannick Christensen, Rasmus Knudsen and Martin Rahbek will have to step up their game.

According to what I've heard he should be injured another 5-7 weeks and for sure out of picture in relation to the JWC 20. But please correct me if I'm wrong - it would be good news...

Russell might not be only key player we'll be missing at the WJC. Maegaard-Scheel left yesterday's game with a broken collarbone and Sebastian Ehlers has also missed the last couple of games for Malmö.

He's out for around 3 months so he will definitely not be playing.

Hmm……that’s another top-nine forward out off the lineup and we are still a month away from the start of the WJC.

Well then both Mierritz and Svendsen are back in Denmark. Ohh...remember our expectations a few years ago...

My expectations to Svendsen are still high, though. Remember that he is an over-ager in the WHL this season, so if he returns to Denmark to play for Rødovre, Copenhagen or Herlev, I'd say that he has made a good move.

In other news has Sebastian Feuk left Timrå's Junior 20-team. He will be training with Rungsted until his hockey future is clarified.

The jury is still out on some of the 1991-born players but there is also still plenty of time for them to pan out.

They might not reach those expectations some had in store for them, but for especially Mieritz and Svendsen the bar was also set pretty high(and depending on how you view things, unfair or unrealistic), being labeled as the next “Bødker” and “Eller”, who at that time hadn’t even played one single shift of NHL hockey.

1991-born D-man Markus Lauridsen has 12 points in 18 games for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL. His 12 points makes him second in the league among defensemen. - http://ushl2011.stats.pointstreak.co...561&position=D (I see Eliteprospects lists him with 13 points in 18 games)

Also in the USHL, forward Anders Schultz has 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points in 13 games for the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders.
    http://ushl2011.stats.pointstreak.co...&seasonid=7561

Nicklas Jensen has 28 points (14 goals, 14 ass.) in 26 games for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL. The Generals are suffering from a bad streak and Jensen's good early-season production has somewhat slowed down. Oshawa Generals are 9th among 10 teams in the OHL Eastern Conference.
    - Last season we saw Jensen explode point-wise in late-December and all-January but this season he will also take part in the WJC's in late-December.

Simon Grønvaldt has 4 points (1 goal, 3 ass.) in 25 games for the Belleville Bulls of the OHL. Belleville are in the lead in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of Grønvaldt's former team Niagara Ice Dogs. Grønvaldt is an over-ager in the OHL with his soon-to-be 21 years of age.

Seems as though Division 1 has replaced the U/20 Division and that the U20 Division is more of a U/17 Division with teams strengthened by a few older players.

On a side note: Any news on a new team for Sebastian Svendsen?

Moose Jaw is blocking him from playing pro hockey in Europe.

20-year old forward Sebastian Svendsen has signed a contract for the remainder of the season with Copenhagen Hockey. Svendsen has not played a single pro game since leaving his former team, the Moose Jaw Warriors in the Canadian WHL junior league, earlier this season.

Agree, however thats the only guy I could imagine having the talent for it at the moment. There is not much else in these generations that are not allready in Sweden.

Well a late change for Spelling maybe? But guess he would want Allsvenskan if he were to change next season.

    I suppose we will soon find out if any of the 1996 born prospects are accepted on a Swedish hockeygymnasium. The most likely players would be;

    D Matias Lassen, Rødovre
    F Thomas Olsen, Rødovre
    F Emil Grandal, Gentofte
    F Søren Nielsen, Esbjerg
    F Nikolaj Ehlers, Biel U20
    F Martin Eskildsen, SønderjyskE
    F Kristian Jensen, Odense

I know that they are not "top prospects" all of them, and we should be happy if just one of them would turn out as a future star. But they all got at chance to "break out" and become special players.

Marcus Nielsen (Center) from Rungsted could be another possibility for a move to the swedish junior system.

The young Bjorkstrand seems very impressive to me, saw Denmark- Latvia game in U20 and while seeing one game maybe doesn't make me a specialist, imho definitely will be drafted if continues like this and should be no lower than 1st-3rd rounds

Well speaking of Danish prospects. NHL CS has released it's midterm rankings and not that it comes as a huge suprise, but Thomas Spelling is the only Dane, who has made the list(nr. 91 amongst European skaters).
