I dont know if it will be broadcasted with TVU. If not i don't think you can see it live. I know a place where you can find the game after it has been played though...

Not exactly. PM me or a3r3z if you want to know more.

Maybe I should add that Frans will become the first player with Danish citizenship ever to play in the NHL if he makes it.

According to Islanders HC Ted Nolan Frans will be playing with Richard Park and Arron Asham. Does anyone know what this will do to his playing time?
    Thanks

They are more the 3rd/4th (ie, checking line). So he will likely play vs Brind'amour or Staal today.

Expect him to play in the 6-10 minute range.

The game is on, and Frans Nielsen is on the lineup. They are talking about him now :)

I'm listening to it on NHL radio.

Unfortunately Yahoo and Comsat only allow US users :(

I was also listening to it on the radio and his name was mentioned quite a few times. He's been involved in action in front of the goal and it sounds to me like he's making an impression. My guess is that he's getting as much time on the ice as your average 3rd/4th liner. :)

I put on Center Ice, but here I am getting the Carolina FSN feed, so they are not focusing on any Islander players.

But I did see one shift of his after the NY Islanders goal that made it 2-1. He had good mobility and seemed to be aware of his defensive positioning...

I saw the game - used a us proxy. Frans played a fine game and had 2 huge chances in the 1st. He had 10 shifts and 7.38 minutes of ice-time. I expect to see more from Frans Nielsen in the NYI jersey :claphands

    Hi, thanks for the help.

I actually found your forum by searching for solutions during the game, and using a proxy I got past the "out of area" (or whatever) message, then got a commercial, but then it said that "the video was not available currently, wait for the next clip" (or something) :(

What is the extent of the media reaction in Denmark to Nielsen's first game?

Both major TV stations (DR,TV2) have online reports of the game and his preformance. TV2 has a longer report instead of DRs standard version from one of the news agencys. The TV2 one also speaks of the radio comentry and how they praised Nielsen and his play. All other media outlets basicly carry the same piece of work.

I think the mainstream media is a bit handicapped because they aren't allowed to show pictures from the game.

TV2 just shows footage from Frans playing in a game for the national team, and even most newspapers I've checked just show pictures of him in the national jersey.

Jazz, to be honest: 7 seconds on TV2 news. I counted them. While showing pictures from another game (Denmark vs Latvia) the commentary said: "Last night, Frans Nielsen made his debut as the first Dane in the NHL. Unfortunately his team lost 2:4"

TV2 text wrote that Nielsen was praised for his play (don't know where they got that from)

Ekstrabladet (150 words) reports that Frans Nielsen was proud of his NHL debut: "our line kept the puck in their zone most of the time and we had some shots on goal while they only had one. So we did as we were expected to do".

BT, which normally have some fair coverage of hockey, hasn't even written an article on the subject.

So, no, this isn't creating headlines in Denmark. Hopefully that will change when Nielsen starts to score in the NHL.

    NA Press:

The News and Observer (NC reports that the U.S. ambassador to Denmark, former Hurricanes president Jim Cain, was at the RBC Center on Saturday to meet with Nielsen after the game.

Newsday (NY) has a good and long article on Nielsen's NHL debut

Politiken and Berlingske had some good articles on Frans' debut.

this article includes an extensive interview.

Frans explains that he didn't exercise with the team before the game but that he was more than happy with his play.

He was also surprised about the difference between the NHL and AHL. He did expect the NHL to be physical but that was not the case. But the speed was of course higher. "But even if the speed is higher in the NHL, the players have more time to think because the game is more systematic. People just don't skate around the ice chaing the puck".

Frans Nielsen is sure that the game in NHL suits him better than the AHL game.

The daily newspaper, Politiken is leading the coverage of FN's NHL career. The newspaper has a REALLY good hockey journalist. :002:

FN was called up again last night and will practise for the first time with the Islanders today. At this point, he doesn't know whether he will be assigned to the same line with Park and Asham (seems likely he will be placed on the 4th line again and log a TOI in the range of 7-10 minutes)

Frans Nielsen is really looking forward to the battle of the big apple. He received a lot of praise for his performance in the first game by his coach and team mates. "They were surprised how well I did", says FN

You can also see here how much time he played in relation to the other players in his first game.

The red lines = end of the periods,
the thick black line = NYI goals
red cross-hatched = penalty served times.
each increment bordered by dashed lines = 1 minute of game-time.

    Game 2, 9 January 2007 @ N. Y Rangers (5:3)

FN centred Aaron Asham and Chris Simon on the 4th line. This time, Frans only logged 3:36 in 7 shifts, primarily in the first period. Frans made his first hit in the NHL; otherwise there's not much to report.

Nielsen ties Bridgeport's all time record

Frans Nielsen is back at Bridgeport where he has produced 6 points since he was recalled from NYI. Last night, he tied Bridgeport's all time record for scoring points in most consequtive games (12 games). After a slow start early in the season, Frans Nielsen has quickly adopted to North American hockey. He now has 29 points (12+17) in 36 games.

He is confident he will be called up again when the opportunity arises. He hopes to be on NYI's roster in the next season.

It is also important to note that his scoring has gone up rapidly since Timrå IK. In Timrå IK last year he made 5 goals and 13 assists in 50 games. I think it is impressing to adapt to N. American hockey AND increase the production that much in 1 season.

No doubt he has a future as an Islander.

That is old stuff. You're right to the extend that Poul Popiel was born and raised in his early years in Denmark, but he was not a Danish citizen when he played in the NHL and he did not get his hockey education in DEN.

The final score was actually 3-2. Nielsen, Sundin and Kozlov's goals were all shootout goals.

And FN's shootout goal hasn't gone unnoticed. TSN writes:

Frans Nielsen, the only player in the NHL born and raised in Denmark.

Nielsen had never taken a turn in a big-league shootout, but coach Ted Nolan gave him the chance in his ninth game and the five-foot-11, 172-pound stringbean from some place called Herning connected to help give his team a 3-2 victory Tuesday night.

''I was pretty nervous,'' Nielsen said afterwards.

The fourth-liner had been on the ice all of seven minutes 58 seconds in the game. He started with no NHL points and, since his shootout goal doesn't count in the official scoring, he still doesn't have any.

He asked teammate Jeff Tambellini what he should do on his free shot. ''He said, `Use that backhand.' I went with it all the way,'' said Nielsen. He deked Andrew Raycroft and roofed a backhander. ''I didn't even look at the goalie,'' said No. 51.

Nolan said his assistants Danny Flynn and Dan Lacroix tipped him off about Nielsen.

''The coaches were watching the players do some shootouts (on Monday) and I didn't see it but they said, `Come down and see this kid on breakaways, he's seven for seven.' So we took the chance of putting him first in the shootout.''

Newsday also has an article on the topic, revealing more about Monday's shootout practise:

The Islanders haven't been too successful in overtime and shootouts, dropping to 5-8 in extra time after another shootout loss Saturday in Boston. At the end of Monday's practice, Nolan had a shootout game against backup goaltender Mike Dunham in which Nielsen stood out.

"Frans went 7-for-7," Nolan said. "He chased 'Dunny' right out of the net. Dunham was so mad he broke a stick. During the third period tonight, we decided to lead off with Frans if it went to a shootout."
