    Awesome! With prohibitive travel costs, time and cultural differences and so on, West and East Asia really can use separate regional developmental tournaments like this.

    With Algeria in the tournament would they be the first African country apart from South Africa to play an ice hockey game on a national team level (though it's not IIHF sanctioned?)?

    I read on nationalteamsoficehockey.com that Algeria will play an exhibtion ice hockey game against Luxemborg on the 29th of this month. Few questions. Is this like a prepatory game and will there be more like this? Algeria_hockey_playa, are you playing in this game? Also, is Algeria soon applying for IIHF membership? Anywho, good luck.

    A prepatory game for Luxembourg leading into the World Championships. Algeria, I would imagine, are taking it seriously since it is their international debut. In terms of preparation, I think one game 3 months in advance doesn't count.

    As far as I remember, the federation has applied, but obviously Algeria_hockey_playa knows the situation better. They are affilated with the ministry of sport, but not the NOC (which is under the ministry of sport). Unless you have NOC affiliation now?

    My small question, will you have a photographer or videographer for the Luxembourg exhibition and the Arab Cup?

    Hello yes Algeria are in the process of applying to the IIHF, we should be able to make atleast 1 level of membership.

    The team uniform has arrived today, i will take pics and post them later.

    What type of stuff do you guys have, in terms of league, arena, and interest in country? And are you guys under the NOC, or your own federation?

    hahahahaha i'm going to take a wild guess and say "nil, nil and nil"
    though Algerian_Hockey_Playa did say they were looking at getting a rink at some point in the future to try and build the game at home?
    Right now it's all about Algerian-passport-carrying players who grew up and learned the game elsewhere: France mostly.
    Unless I've misremembered things.

    yep you're right, as any person with an algerian parent is entitled to an algerian passport the players are dual nationals who learned to play abroad.

    There are plans for an ice rink in a ski area developed by an emriates company, and sports ministry has said the government would build 1 depending on the need for development of the sport in algeria.

    There are also plans to get an active inline league in place and bring the homegrown inline players onto the ice hockey team. There are many suitable inline facilities in algeria.

    there is actually interest in algeria, western culture and sports are going through quite a popular stage right now.
    We've been contacted by people who want to get involved, all we can tell them at the moment is learn to skate on inline skates as things get more organised.

    Arab Cup Article

    Hockey sur glace
    Un championnat Arabe à Dubaï
    en juin prochain

    Maroc, Algérie, Koweït et Émirats Arabes Unis en lice;
    l’équipe du Maroc recrute … au Québec
    Tous les Maghrébins du Québec, qui se passionnent pour le
    Canadiens et portent Kovalev au rang de héros auront une
    autre raison de vibrer en juin prochain. Du 4 au 7 de ce premier
    mois de l’été en effet, Dubaï sera l’hôte du Premier
    Championnat Arabe de Hockey sur glace.
    Quatre équipes nationales seront en effet en compétition pour
    remporter les lauriers de cette première édition du
    Championnat Arabe de Hockey sur glace. Il s’agit du Maroc,
    de l’Algérie, du Koweït et des Émirats Arabes Unis.
    Ces deux dernières sélections seront structurées autour de
    joueurs ayant appris à manier la rondelle aux États Unis;
    l’Équipe Algérienne est construite autour de joueurs ayant
    pratiqué essentiellement en France, le Maroc lui aura une
    couleur très franchement Québécoise, puisque l’ossature de sa
    sélection, rassemblée autour du Capitaine Mimoun Mrini à
    fait ses débuts sur la glace à Montréal et a Sherbrooke et que
    certains de ses ont eu l’occasion de se produire au tournoi
    Pee Wee de Québec avant, l’âge venant, d’intégrer l’équipe
    Seniors des Capitals de Rabat.
    Les premiers au camps d’entraînement
    Les premiers joueurs de l’Équipe du Maroc à s’être présentés
    au camp d’entraînement sont donc ceux qui constituent l’effectif
    Seniors des Capitals de Rabat.
    Il s’agit du capitaine Mimoun Mrini, de Hassan Remmachi,
    Adil Maïfi, Mehdi Naciri, Rachid Tagnaouti,
    Habib El Alaoui et Alae Eddine Brik,; mais
    également des «internationaux du club», le
    Français Denis Blancan et le Marocain d’origine
    québécoise Daniel Dion.
    Renforts recherchés
    Cet effectif reste cependant assez largement
    insuffisant pour faire face à une épreuve de type
    championnat. Avec neuf joueurs seulement en
    effet, les temps de glace risquent d’être très
    longs et la compétition épuisante. C’est
    pourquoi le Capitals de Rabat, pour les besoins
    de l’Équipe du Maroc, sont partis à la recherche
    de renforts et devinez où … ici, au Québec.
    Khalid Mrini, président des Capitals de Rabat
    lance ainsi un appel à tous les hockeyeurs originaires
    du Maroc, âgés de 17 à 35 ans, gardiens,
    défenseurs ou attaquants, à faire acte de candidature
    pour entrer dans les rangs de l’équipe qui
    représentera leur pays d’origine.
    Outre la condition d’âge, les candidats devront être
    disponibles à partir du 20 mai prochain; du 20 mai au 1er juin
    pour une ultime concentration à Rabat et du 2 au 7 juin pour
    la compétition à Dubaï.
    Can anyone translate this article on the Arab Cup?

    short version:

    teh Moroccan team's core is the Rabat Capitals hockey club, but since the team doesn't have enough players, they are looking to reinforce with Quebec-resident Moroccan-born players.

    It also says that the UAE and Kuweit teams will be formed predominantly of USA-based players (which I find odd when you consider that there are, at least in UAE, players there so why look elsewhere?), I'd like to know where THAT bit of info originated.

    Sweet, thanks for the link!

    Still, waht I meant was that I wonder about their sources WRT the UAE and Kuweiti rosters, especially as I know UAE has its own championship and that its Asian Games team was composed of domestic players (Kuweit I'm not 100% but I'd assume the same?), so why outsource now?

    I think when they found out that the Algerian players have pro background, they knew they were in trouble, so looking for players outside saves time, I guess.

    so, not many homegrown players in this tournament? if there's some feedback and contributions from the overseas players and coaches to these new born hockey programs, then that'll do some good, but just flying in NA based players whenever there are tournaments won't help develop hockey in the region (the flip side of the coin is that, I guess it's a good thing that each federation is taking this competition seriously and wants to win badly, or not lose badly.)

    im not sure how accurate that article is, i do know 1 of kuwaits best players was born in USA and did play in the asia cup, that was Yussef Karam who got injured.

    I expect samir bouchaoui to be in the moroccan team, who played for Grums IK in swedens 2nd division, hes 6'4", 220lbs and will probably be the best player in the tournament, along with algerias Yassine Fahas who has played last 4 seasons in french ligue magnus.

    this is Saad Tawfik, i think he is captain of the moroccan team, wearing 1 of the morocco jerseys. Its simple, the logo has the moroccan star with the shape of morocco in the circle.

    Greetings,

    For UAE, go to http://www.uaeihf.org/, then click gallery, then next, and you get somewhat of a good shot, just not the whole thing.

    This youtube video has Kuwait 2007.

    Hi,

    I just came back from a meeting in Abu Dhabi with the other countries. The
    moroccan team has a big Canadian connection, the majority of their team
    reside in canada, and the boss Khalid Mrini has lived in Montreal for 28
    years. He told me morocco plans more rinks, and next month he will attend
    the IIHF meeting in Montreal with UAE and Kuwait to discuss membership and
    apply to compete in future world championships. UAE hope to compete in the
    2009 Div. 3 World Championship.

    We visited the rink in which the tournament will take place, it is an
    olympic size rink and is currently being refurbished, its coming along
    nicely. There are also plans for another olympic size rink in UAE.

    Kuwait are a very well organised team, with fitness coaches etc, they seem
    very well financed and backed by the government. The 2009 arab cup will be
    in Kuwait City.

    The fixtures will be;

    day 1;
    UAE V Morocco
    Kuwait V Algeria

    day 2;
    UAE V Kuwait
    Morocco V Algeria

    day 3;
    UAE V Algeria
    Kuwait V Morocco

    day 4;
    1st V 2nd
    3rd V 4th

    The dates are still TBA as the rink refurbishment may go on a week longer
    than expected.

    Ive added position and jersey number. No 100% confirmed backup goalie so may travel with 1.

    We will be coached by Djamel Bouhadouf who is also captain, and coach of epinal division 3 team in france.
