    2007-08 Season: #7.

Finance: Stavanger was established by Finnish expatriats in 2000. The Finns' interest, however, quickly waned and in 2002, Stavanger Oilers was on the verge of going bankrupt. The club was saved by Tore Christiansen, a financier from the oil industry. In 2004. With Christiansen as the money man, Stavanger has been able to keep a high player salary budget (claimed to even bigger than Storhamar). The budget deficit in 2004 was estimated at no less than NOK 3 mio, but this deficit was covered by Tore Christensen. Since 2004, the finances of Stavanger has gradually become more stable. 1/3 of the club's revenue comes from gate receipts which are high by Norwegian standards, the rest from sponsors, the number of which have grown from 4 to more than 70.

Lorenskog signed a swedish forward Tobias Lindstrom.

    20 y.o. tank-like forward(177 cm 95 kg) scored 20 goals and 40 points in 40 games for Djurgerden's U20 team last year.

Anders Myrvold, Norway's former Stanley Cup winner, has been sold to Stavanger Oilers. The transfer fee is undisclosed, but it is clear that Myrvold's contract is 3 years.

Furuset on the Brink of Financial Collapse - Again

Furuset is on the brink of financial collapse. The profit and loss sheet for the 2007-08 season reveals a shocking deep-red loss of NOK3.4 mio. That's a lot of money in Norwegian hockey (according to my assessment well above 50% of Furuset's income). This is not the first time Furuset has run into serious financial troubles. In 2002, Furuset was relegated to the 2nd division for the same reason and it took the club four years to claw its way back to the Elite league. Now history may repeat itself.
At this point there is no talk about Furuset pulling out Get-Ligaen. But it will happen if the club does not succeed in increasing its income (attracting more sponsor money) or cutting its costs. The current team is quite talented and could very well make it to the playoffs. But the question is how many players Furuset will be able to keep when the season start. Negotiations have just started with the players on cutting the player salaries and it cannot be excluded that some players will demand being released from their contracts if they are forced to accept a major cut in their salaries.

Get-Ligaen is a very good developmental league for young players. It may very well have happened that the Swedish Elitserien clubs have started to realize this. So far, the Norwegian clubs have already signed three Swedish juniors. Being Djurgården J20's #2 scoring leader last season, Lindström is surely talented. Last week, Stjernen signed another J20 player from Djurgården, namely Linus Kjell (19). Kjell won TV-pucken with Stockholm in 2004 and has already played 8 games in Elitserien. The third player is Björn Danielsson (HV71 junior) who has signed with Furuset. Also, the best Norwegian prospects are increasingly being signed by Elitserien clubs, most lately Mats Zucarello Olsen (MODO) and Jonas Holøs (Färjestad). These signs of further integration between Swedish and Norwegian hockey will be very fruitful for Norwegian hockey.

Yes, it's very good in my opinion. Lindstrom and Kjell have at least a good SEL-player potential. IMO it's much better for the to play in Norway rather than in Division 1 for example.

On the other hand, best Norwegians like Aasen and Holos get their chance to step to new level in SEL.

Oh, yes, he's the 4th one. I don't know him, but Eliteprospects.com informs that he had the best +/- in the SuperElit, South Division in Spring 2008.

    Furuset saved for now

Aftenposten reports that Furuset's financial troubles (#15) have been taken care of and that the club will play in Get-Ligaen next season.

In the past few weeks, the club has managed to increase its sponsor budget but the bulk of the savings stems from the willingness of the players to accept a major salary cut corresponding to 1/3 of their salaries.

No less than 1,600 attended Sparta's first training pass yesterday. That's more than the average attendance in Get-Ligaen.

If anything comes close to a true Norwegian hockey hotspot, it's Sarpsborg.

Karsten, if either Valerenga and/or Storhamar were to leave for a proposed Nordic League involving most of the SEL and SM-Liiga teams, do you think it would end up crippling interest in Get-Ligaen, and ultimately hurt hockey in Norway as opposed to aiding it?

    Vålerenga expects to rebound strongly

Vålerenga had a relatively miserable 2007-08 given the fact that the club has got accustomed to win everything there is to win in Norwegian hockey.

However, coach Espen Knutsen expects Vålerenga to rebound strongly in 2008-09. In a recent interview with Aftenposten, Knutsen was not shy of predicting that Vålerenga will both win the regular season series and the Norwegian gold next season.

Given the other Get-Ligaen clubs' losses of key players to foreign clubs, this may very well happen. Vålerenga has been able to go against the tide by adding five notable foreign players. On the goaltender side, the team has been strengthened with Patrick des Rochers from Augsburger Panthers (DEL). In addition, Vålerenga has signed Regan Kelly and Blake Evans from the collapsed Milano Vipers as well as Gavin Morgan from Rockford Icehogs (AHL) and Andreas Frisk from AIK Stockholm. In addition, Knut Henrik Spets returns to Norwegian hockey.

The only other Norwegian club that has gone against the tide is Stavanger Oilers which is not surprising since Stavanger has a player budget comparable with Vålerenga.

Most of the teams' rosters have been updated. Frisk/Asker and Stjernen haven't updated their rosters since last season (!) so they'll have to wait.

Keeping with Frisk-Asker, the club has found the substitutes for the Abbott-brothers.

One is Elias Godoy, a Canadian playmaker who has played with the Abbotts in CHL.

The other is Mark Pandolfo who is reported to have some of the qualities of the Abbotts, very fast and a hard shooter. Pandolfo, who has played a few games in AHL, was recommended by a Norwegian who runs a hockey academy in Boston.

Frisk cannot afford big names so the club has to rely very much on its scouting contacts. The Abbotts have also been consulted in the process.

Mark Pandolfo is a cousin of Jay Pandolfo from the New Jersey Devils of the NHL.

He was actually drafted by the Devils himself, allthough he has never played in the NHL.

Betsafe.com, a new betting company focusing on Scandinavia, set the following odds on the teams for next season:

    1. Vålerenga (2.50)
    2. Stavanger (3.80)
    3. Sparta (4.50)
    4. Storhamar (5.00)
    5. Frisk-Asker (20.00)
    6. Stjernen (20.00)
    7. Comet (35.00)
    8. Lillehammer (50.00)
    9. Lørenskog (80.00)
    10. Furuset (100.00)

The cardinal ranking looks probable and Vålerenga is -- almost as usual - indeed a strong favourite to win the championship. But 2.50 even 3 weeks before the season has started is too little. However, betsafe does not compensate for this by offering higher odds on the main challengers. The odds on Stavanger, Sparta and Storhamar are also too small. A clear indication that this new betting firm doesn't like to lose.

As a further proof of this, I created an account the other day. So far, I have made two bets - lost one and won one. When I lost, the betting company informed me promptly that I had lost, but when I won, it took more than a day to receive the confirmation.

Definitely not a company that I will use in the future, but I will take the 500 dkr (US$100) they have given me as a bonus for creating an account.

Pandolfo never was drafted by the Devils. He did play for their affiliates in the ECHL and the AHL. He and Elias Godoy were teammates in college for 4 years at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

You are right, I just saw his rights where held by New Jersey at one point so wrongly assumed he had been drafted. They have just signed him as undrafted for their minor teams then.

    GET-LIGAEN 2008-09 - preview

    Get-ligaen 2008-09 starts tonight, and here's a preview:

    1. VÅLERENGA IF
Expected to roar back from last season's disappointing performance. Has the deepest roster of the league and made strong additions during the pre-season: DesRochers (Augsburger, DEL) will replace Scott Stirling as goaltender; on the blue line, newcomers Regan Kelly (Milano) and Anders Frisk (AIK) make up for the loss of Anders Myrvold, and the forward lines have been enforced with two Canadians. Should VIF struggle in the first half of the season, you can rest assure that the team will be enforced with further additions around Christmas time; VIF has a tradition for this, and the club has plenty of money qua its entanglement with the football section of Vålerenga.

    2. Stavanger Oilers
Stavanger really struggled last season, but this is unlikely to happen this time. The Oilers have the biggest player budget of the league, and they have really been active on the transfer market during the off-season. Newcomers include goaltender, Tommy Johansen (Stavanger now have two of the best goaltenders of the league) and defensemen Anders Myrvold (VIF), Jonathan Zion and Nathan Lutz (from the Danish league), and forward Shawn Collymore (from the AHL). In addition, Stavanger has hired the experienced Canadian-Italian coach Enio Saccilotto from Rødovre Mighty Bulls (DEN). Stavanger have the potential to go all the way, but (as usual) high expectations could have a knocking-out effect on the team.

    3. Storhamar
Storhamar, last year's champion, is expected to end-up in top 4. Probably not as good as last year. The losses of Martz and Stensson have made the blue line pretty thin.

    4. Sparta Sarpsborg
Sarpsborg has developed into Norway's #1 hockeytown and the fans' expectations are skyhigh. Has a potential to reach top 4, but the team has disappointed in the pre-season. The strength of the roster is more or less on par with last season, but Jonas Holøs' departure to Sweden is a big loss.

    5. Stjernen
Stjernen was in serious economic troubles last season, and, as a consequence, in danger of being relegated. The finances have been given a salt water injection during the pre-season, and the team is expected to rebound. Several very strong additions (Pål Grotnes, Nicklas Rahm, Henrik Höglund and Jan Sochor) makes it likely that Stjernen will reach the middle of the table, and they might even enter top 4.

    6. Lillehammer
One of the best development clubs in Norway due to LIK's tight integration with Lillehammer NTG (sports elite high school). Has an ability to get a lot out of little.

    7. Frisk-Asker
Won the regular season last year, but is significantly weakened with the departure of Mats Z. Aasen, the Abbott brothers and Marcus Nilsson. Doesn't have the funds to make up for these losses. Should however be able to end up just inside the playoff spots.

    8. Comet IK
Lots of transfers in and out during the pre-season, but apart from Peter Andersson (who makes up for the loss of Grotnes) and Magnus Eriksson (from Nordsjælland, DEN) no significant additions. Comet's finances are very fragile so it cannot afford to sign expensive players. Has managed to keep Arup, Stokvik, Saxrud, Souvanto and Kaipanen, and this should be good enough to make it to the playoffs.

    9. Lørenskog IK
New comer to Get-ligaen and strong candidate to end up in the playdowns. Unlike Trondheim, we should not expect Lørenskog to be cannon-fodder for the big teams. The club has made a number of interesting additions. Always exciting to see how a new team performs in the highest league.

    10. Furuset
Will be this season's Stjernen. Terrible finances. Ended up with a loss of more than NOK3 mio. last year, and for a long time it was an open question whether Furuset would be pulled from Get-Ligaen.

TEAM BUDGETS and estimated SALARY BUDGETS
    GET-LIGAEN 2008-09

As my previous post indicates, there are huge differences among the Norwegian elite clubs' finances.

Today, NRK, Norway's public tv station which transmits from GET-ligaen, published the clubs' team budgets. NRK didn't explain the figures, but there is little doubt that they are estimates of the total team budgets, not to be confused with salary budgets.

The discount rates depend on the number of foreign players. In Get-Ligaen the clubs can max. dress 7 foreign players in a game.
Also today, Verdens Gang (VG), a leading Norwegian paper, revealed that the foreign players cost the Norwegian elite clubs NOK 20 mio. out of annual gross turnover of NOK 100 mio (20%). The net salary per foreign player is in the range €20-50,000. To this should be added free car, apartment and flight tickets. On average, the foreign players cost NOK300,000, and this is very much by Norwegian standards. The situation is completely reverse in Denmark. Here, the Danish players are most costly.

I find it probable that the team budgets should be discounted by some 55-65%, depending on the number and international experience of the foreign players, and the size of the roster in total, to get the estimated salary budgets. The salary budgets in the following table are therefore based on my estimates. (these

Note: Norway is often compared with Denmark. As I have noted in Albank-ligaen 2008-09 thread on the Danish board, all the Danish elite clubs' salary budgets are in the range US$ 1-2 mio. Only two (perhaps 3) Norwegian teams are within this range, and this explains the rather onerous transfer pattern between these two countries.

° Valerenga player Mats Trygg received an hard bodycheck on plexiglass and remain unconscious for a while. "He didn't remember nothing for 20 minutes after the hurt" said his dad John. Mathias was taken to Ullevål University Hospital for a X-Ray and a check but fortunately doctors said he "only" received a concussion. Player spent night in hospital.
° There is a rumour about possible Lars Erik Spets' sign by Valerenga

With a fantastic performance of goalie Mikael Vuorio, Furuset had an unexpected win vs rival Valerenga. Furuset GM Niklas Grönstrand is enthusiast: Vuorio is the best goalkeeper of the league, no matter what Espen Knutsen (Valerenga coach) and others say about Patrick Desroches (Valerenga goalie). I think Vuorio is the best goalkeeper in Europe. It is strange that no one has mentioned that he is the best in the Norwegian series. He was fantastic against Valerenga. I never thought I would see VIF beaten in Furuset Forum. This is great. Nothing tastes better than to beat Valerenga"

° Sparta Sarpsborg coach Rolf Nilsson denied rumours about a possible departure of new star and League top-scorer Martin Røymark: "This season? No, we are not going to drop Røymark now. Moreover, there is no club that has so much money that they can afford to take him. He has a very high potential, his time will come. I think he needs a world cup tournament before he goes to Sweden, and that he will benefit from playing this season in Sparta"

° Anders Helgesen (Stjernen) from December to end of season play with pain in the ankle. The player must pay the operation itself. "The problem is that the club does not have to finance it. I can not do anything with it, but it's a little bother that you have to pay for it yourself"

° Norwegian Icehockey President Ole-Jacob Libæk said he considers precocious any plan of a future Nordic League: "It is certainly not mature right now. It is difficult to predict the future, but the question depends on how professional our sport is. Maybe we get only three to four professional clubs in Norway in a few years. "

What a bad season it's been for IK Comet Haden and Furuset. It's 11 games into the season and both teams have just 1 win so far this season. In addidition to just one win, they are just getting destroyed in every game right now, IK Comet Haden has a -27 GD while Furuset has a -30 GD.
