Varsity Blues 05 The Season Begins

We had our first preseason game the other night, we suffered a tough loss.
I think it can be attrributed to preseason jitters as well as nobody actually knowing eachother on the team, over half the team are new guys, we also lack in a certain superstar international that we usually have one or two of.

The good news was I got to play forward, almost never get to play forward and I had soooo many scoring opportunities but I just couldnt bury it. I was again ridiculed for my bad shot (its somewhat of a weak point in my play) and I do endeavour to improve on it if only I had somewhere to practise.

Anyways enough ranting, heres the boxscore.

Thanks for the update Fez! Hopefully your game will improve in the shot area as the season goes on. Don't let your teammates get you down -- the time when you bury one will come.

    Keep us posted!!

    That is correct.

I believe there are 9 teams

    Varsity Blues
    Orcas
    Druids
    Celtics
    Rangers
    Rockets
    Pirates
    Jets
    Manuwai

I should probably state that we are only an exhibition team due to many of our players playing for another team in the same league, meaning although out points are recorded unofficially we are not able to compete in the playoffs.

Kinda crappy, but next season we hope to go into the top league where there is hitting allowed and not as an exhibition team.

(right now we are in the non-hitting league below it, there are 3 senior leagues, we're in the middle one)

    Ha!

How was prem training last night?

You should ask any guys that go to auck uni and are at the prem training if they want to play in any of our games, jono has us asking everyone and anyone that is in prems in order to look good for the prem league next year

Celtics on Sunday, 6pm on Ice @ Avondale
We should do a lot better, OJ's back (the norwegian)

    Success!
We got some guys back, played more as a team, and the fitness training our coach gave us during the week seemed to pay off as we stormed the Celtics 10-3.

Although I was one again relegated to D :( I managed to get an assist.

    Heres the boxscore

OK national league...... not a lot of progress has been made from a players P.O.V...... I know they are asking for applications for coaches.... managers etc.... Our national senior team are away for the DIV II worlds in croatia so not a lot has been done towards naming of teams or selections etc..... But i have been assured from the AIHA (auckland ice hockey association) directors that all is set to progress.... so hopefully when the Seniors return we will know more.... In the mean time check out our seniors website http://www.iceblacks.com hopefully they will update it regularly but no promises

Always wanted to play for a storied franchise like the druids. You refer to D as a demotion, defense is actually a well kept secret because those who like it like it alot. More icetime and the play is in front of you.Great to see hockey is alive in New Zealand!

I can think of equal negatives.

    A. You get blamed for everything (well at least I do)

    B. ... Its defense.

Well its not for everyone i guess. What is the usual game time for you guys down there? Do you get prime time ice or is there a battle for icetime because there are not many facilities?

Our games are mostly on Sunday nights though this weekends is on a Satruday night, usually around 7 or 8.

Our tranings are on Thursday nights at 8, so we dont really have any HORRIBLE ice times but it didnt use to be this nice. I remember when there was only one rink and you had training at 5am before school.

Sorry about the long overdue update.

We've been on a roll lately, our only loss this season has come in the preseason.

Teams are starting to default to us just so they dont have to play us, it kind of sucks.

Heres the current stats for the team

Since Calvin (kiwi_hockey_guy) has been injured Ive jumped ahead of him in the standings :)

OK here is a long awaited update.

We played our annual AUT game.

This time we made sure AUT had a better team (we smoked them 14-0 last year)

So they had Andrew Hay and a few other notable NZ National Team names.

We however had a whole line from the West Auckland Admirals and two of the best NZ inliners.

So again we kind of blew them out

    13-3

    EDIT:

Also the Varsity Reds, our B team won the final to take out the Senior B League.

Next Sunday they play the promotion/relegation match against the worst team in the Senior A for the chance to play in the Senior A next year.

It was an awesome game though, there were even fights (very rare in NZ hockey)
