This will be an interesting tournament. Sweden and Russia have very young teams. Sweden has 13 players that were born in 1989 or later, Russia has 12. Finland and Germany both have only five. Sweden even has 7 players that are eligible for the Women's U18 worlds. They could have a very good team there.

Russia's chances won't be so favorable. Only thee of the 12 players born after 1989 are U18 eligible. The only major names on this roster are Smolentseva and Onolbaeva. This roster is one to get some younger players international experience but they may have missed the boat by not selecting more U18 players. Last year their U18 side was mauled and I doubt things will be any better in 2009, they should have given their U18s some quick international experience before January. Strange that Russia did not select anybody from SKIF was as they are the other powerhouse of Russian women's hockey, yet Finland will have their SKIF players.

I think Finland are the favorites to win and not just because of home ice. The young players they have are mightily skilled with the veterans being some of Europe's finest. My prediction would be Finland winning from Sweden, Germany, and Russia finishing an outclassed 4th.

I wonder why Sweden pulled their goalie 22 seconds before the end. They had a power play going till the end of the period but it's still strange. In any case the results were as expected. The experience Finland beat the young Russia easily while the young Sweden played a relatively tight game against the experienced German side.

Quite an upset in that game, really. Germany came off a well played game against the Swedish, but its still an unexpected result. Short tournaments like this require a goalie on a hot streak. Schroeder played well against Sweden, what if Harss had that game?
