Qatar Under-15 ice hockey team wins

    THE PENINSULA

The Qatar Minor Ice Hockey Association, sponsored by ConocoPhillips, has completed hosting the First International Under-15 and Under-18 Minor Hockey Tournament at the Villaggio Ice Rink.

Twelve teams from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain participated in the Under-15 and Under-18 category competitions.

The Under-15A Qatar team was also sponsored by ConocoPhillips and won the gold, as well as did the U-15 Qatar team.

Approximately 160 hockey players participated in the Qatar Raiders Cup.

“ConocoPhillips is pleased to have sponsored such a successful tournament that has set the standard for youth leadership on the ice and off. All the participants displayed enthusiasm, a passion for excellence and great community spirit,” commented George Findling, Acting President of ConocoPhillips, Qatar.

Abu Dhabi won the gold in the Under-18A category and Kuwait took home the gold in the Under-18B category.

The Qatar Minor Ice Hockey Association is a volunteer-run organization that provides children aged 4 to 17 the opportunity to learn and play the game of hockey in Doha.

“The programme is designed to promote fitness in young people while instilling the ideals of good sportsmanship, fair play and respect for others. This year we had 158 students participating in our programme,” stated Debbie Noseworthy Managing Director of Qatar Minor Ice Hockey Association in Qatar.

The programme involves both a Learn to Skate programme and hockey divisions from initiation to bantam. Next year’s program will begin in September 2009.

This year’s sponsors also included the College of North Atlantic, McDonalds, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Rayyan, and Gondolania Ice Arena.

Sounds great. Is this event dominated by children of foreign workers or do the children of local nationals get involved significantly ?
