    Slovenia Slovenian Championship 2009/10

The list of participating teams in new season's Slovenian championship and the competition system have been announced finally.

    The list of the teams:

    HK Acroni Jesenice
    HDD Tilia Olimpija, Ljubljana
    HDK Stavbar, Maribor
    HK Triglav, Kranj
    HD mladi Jesenice
    HS Toja Olimpija, Ljubljana
    HK MK Bled
    KHL Mladost, Zagreb (Croatia)
    HK Slavija, Ljubljana
    KHL Medveščak, Zagreb (Croatia)
    HK Partizan, Beograd (Serbia)
    EC Graz 99ers, Austria

There were some changes since the last season. Two Slovenian teams shall not participate. They are Stavbar's farm team and Alfa.

Last season's winner of the regular season, Medveščak will play with its farm team.

Newcomers in the league are Serbian champion, Partizan and farm team of Austrian EBEL member, Graz 99ers.

Regular season shall consist of triple round robin system with everyone playing every other team in three times, 27 rounds in total. Two Slovenian teams that play in EBEL will not play in the regular season since they automatically qualify for the play-off.

All teams are eligible to play in the play-off. Regular season starts on September, 23rd.

Like I said, Partizan have enough good team for Slo-leaguea, nothing special but ok... goalie from Slovakia is excellent but Foltin is far, far from what I expected.

    g: Surek (Lupulov)
d: Jacob, Walling, F.Mirkovic, Ilic, U.Sibinovic (Dunda & McKinven are out due to personal reasons).
f: Sretovic, Foltin, Milovanovic, Kovacevic, Gabric, Fournier, S.Ristic, Brkusanin, Ogrizovic,(Komazec, L.Sibinovic, Rakovic), Racek(new,Svk).

Like you can see, many of them are young gays - but ready for this competetion. Many of our players don't wanted to play for Partizan 'couse of low money for contract, per month (about 300-350euro for domestic players).

That was my first post about this competity, and after all Partizan have open doors to step in final - just one more win in friday against Triglav. Beginig was not so easy 'cause they haven't enough time on ice (only 10 days before the "Sloliga" Partizan started with scate trainings). After 18 games it was claer that players reached a level to play good hockey.

Now, we can say that it was good choice for us to play here with Slovanian, Croatian, (+Grazz) teams, good for some young players, and good for our Serbian NT. For me, bad thing is that we haven't more money for better foreigners like Pavel Popravka, Justin Rohr, Vitaly Gavrilyuk, Miroslav Hantak, Maksim Blinov and others, which played in Serbian league in past. But, some players like Mike Walling, or Jozef Liska, (and my favorite who played just few games Jamie McKinven), are playing realy good, on level of those guys.
    Vitaly Gavrilyuk:
    http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=26574
    Justin Rohr:
    http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=49252
    Miroslav Hantak:
    http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=46467

    Edit:
... and ofcourse, I forget to introduce our best players: Marko Kovacevic, Branko Mamic, Boris Gabric, Marko Milovanovic, Marko Sretovic and Srdjan Ristic (who played centre position in third line all 27 games)... those guys made great job, realy great job all regulary season.

    p.s.
In other side it's a pity that we have some players which play only Serbian league, and I'm sure that in next season somebody of big guys will give money to bild one more team. With few good foreigners that will be team for respect too.

Great second game between Partizan - Triglav.
Here are goals from Partizan and some part of fantastic crowd( the last 3 minute of video)
This was the first time after 20 years that National Serbian television(RTS2) live broadcasting ice hockey game of domestic team( there was live broadcast only in old Yugoslavia).

A question I get it to 12 teams partipicating coming season in Slovenian Champs and ..."Regular season shall consist of triple round robin system with everyone playing every other team in three times"... isn´t that 33 games per team and not 27 games or is my math outdated since my school years?

Greg Kužnik is playing for HDD Olimpija. So he plays in this league just in play-offs when his teams joins after EBEL season..

Remember this league with foreign clubs is actually not slovensko državno prvenstvo (Slovene championship), but is called SloHokej liga.

Coss is right, this year we basicly have two separate competitions - SloHokej liga, which is consisted of four foreign teams (Mladost, Medveščak, Graz, Partizan) and six Slovenian teams - without Jesenice and Olimpija main teams. The league will play out till the champion is crowned, with its own playoffs and everything. Slovenian national championship start after SloHokej league is finished and will consist of Jesenice, Olimpija and top four Slovenian teams from SloHokej league.

In principal, Slovenian championship will start in february or march and will be quickly finished.

I think this is a greatest solution. In previous years we saw a foreign teams in our championship that didn't have right to qualify for playoffs, then the next season they had the chance but it wasn't accepted well among the fans etc. etc. This year we have a separate league with national championship more as an exhibition - but still very prestigious - end of the season. Afterall, Jesenice and Olimpija are still far far ahead of other teams, but yet they get a chance to welcome the teams in their towns for a game or two, while Jesenice and Olimpija don't have to play too many games with lower teams...

So, an other MOL Liga solution. Great. Would be nice to join these two leagues (at least as two divisions).

Serbian team first time on higher level of league, it will be interesting... only 10 days on ice, no time for more trainings but I hope that guys will show something.

Canadians are ok, we know that guys and no fear of him but mistery are two players from Slovakia (goalie Surek and Foltin)... Fred Perowne, is missing for this team, his spirit is something special for us which support hockey in Serbia.

Good luck to all teams !!!

Bears farm team will finish around 6th place. I think Mladost can repeat last year 7th place and that will be good result for them, because they have weaker team. No more Belić in goal, best defender Jacmenjak has problem with spine and it is questionable how many games he will play this season. Mladost wont have problem with scoring, Mario Novak, Čunko, Smerdelj, Jakovac have good scoring touch, but problem can/will be defence.

Great to see Triglav doing so well!

I wonder how fans of teams like Triglav & Maribor can really live or die with their teams, though......no matter how well they do, the odds of a team like Triglav or Maribor knocking off one of the EBEL teams to win this league or the Slovenian championship are extremely slim.

Actually, I consider clubs like Triglav and Maribor the backbone of the Slovenian hockey. Everyone can collect enough money and create a professional team that will play in league like EBEL until the money runs out.

But, to maintain a hockey club with all the selections from atom to senior team and have them compete in the national championship is quite an achievement.

I hope for more Triglavs all over the region.

I agree with you......and thus my earlier question -

Don't the fans of teams like Triglav & Maribor get frustrated by the fact that they have almost no chance at all to become the Slovenian champions due to big money teams with big money players joining the playoffs at the very end of the season?

As far as the teams are concerned, I could agree with Drax, although most of the expenses for younger players, up to senior team are covered from parents. Senior team players are paid almost nothing. Teams are more or less amateur/semi-pro, there is no team at the moment, that could turn proffesional in short notice.

Most of the fans of Triglav, for instance, are parents and friends of players. Other Kranj inhabitants are true fans of Jesenice (some of the also of Olimpija), while they like to see their home team to do well. I don't think there is more than 20 true hardcore fans of teams like Triglav.

With all that in mind, there are no expectations of those teams to become the national champion (or at least play in the finals). They have their own goals, which is to reach the semifinals and get a game or two against Jesenice and Olimpija... But the main goal of those teams is to give young generation something to do, to produce players like Milovanovič, Pavlin, Tavželj, Muršak, Robar... players that are capable of playing for either Jesenice and Olimpija or for some foreign team. Jan Muršak (Detroit Red Wings / Grand Rapids Griffin) is a product of Maribor and I'm sure they are really proud on him.

Oh and Marc, about the fact "big money players joining the big money team" - that was really frustrating back in 90's for us, Jesenice fans. Olimpija signed a bunch of foreigners for the playoffs and that was frustrating :) Jesenice and Olimpija don't need to reinforce themselves to beat Triglav or Maribor at the end of the season, so I don't think it frustrates them in any way...

Finally something good from Mladost. In the next fixture they'll have a nice chance against Graz II for the third consecutive win.Obviously Jačmenjak's return was realy important for them because they started to play much better after that.
It's good to see that there is good hockey in the country(town) beside Medveščak(I and II).

Well, it is not such good hockey from Mladost as they played few seasons ago (2006/2007, 2007/2008 and first half of 2008/2009).

Does KHL Zagreb still have a senior team? If so, why not join this competition?

Zagreb has but few seniors left. Durinng spring they lost M. Blagus, Jutriša, Senzel, Belojević and Šupih-Kvaternik to Medveščak and S. Blagus, Plahutar, Franjković, Kopajtić, Mirić and Teuber to Mladost.

There are several reasons for this exodus. When Medveščak joined EBEL it immediatelly became attractive for many Croatian players of all ages from 7 to 20. Both players and their parents thought Medveščak will offer them better opportunity for development. In case of Mislav Blagus who earned a spot in EBEL roster that's true, in most other cases there are no obvious benefits.

When first batch of Zagreb players announced their transfer to Medveščak, it became obvious that two slots alloted to Croatians in Slohokej league shall go to Medveščak (who actually plays with its newly created farm team) and Mladost. Naturally, with no prospects of playing anywhere, the rest of Zagreb's seniors went to Mladost in order to continue their respective careers.

Such development didn't cause a headache in Zagreb's management because the club has little if any sponsors for the senior team. Without these costs, the money club receives from the parents of young players is more than enough to maintain club's hockey school and all selections up to U18.

Unfortunately, people who run Medveščak's non-EBEL activities do not even hide their contempt for the rest of the Croatian hockey community and actively undermine the very existance of both Mladost and Zagreb. Young players of all ages are activelly lured to leave their teams and join Medveščak with promises of playing in Slovenian and Austrian youth leagues.

Instead of using EBEL to spread the popularity of hockey across the country, Medveščak pursues the policy of identifying itself with the Croatian hockey in general. Although dissapointing, such behaviour isn't exactly surprising because Medveščak was systematically neglecting its own hockey school counting on grabbing prospects from Zagreb and Mladost.

Every single native born Croat currently playing in EBEL was a product of Zagreb's (Belić, Lovrenčić, Blagus) or Mladost's (Trstenjak) hockey school. What Medveščak is actually doing regarding Croatian hockey development leads Croatian hockey to its extinction. Unbeliavable, but unfortunately true.

It's really sad but maybe it's possible that sponsors will help other clubs because of current reneissance of hockey in the country(town).Public interest is high and I want to believe that better days of our national hockey are coming.
Sad thing is that nothing good happened so far from the time when Medveščakjoined EBEL.They aren't playing special, they are average team.Interest for the games is high, stands are always full but till when? Will it be the same next year?Mladost is worster than previous years and Zagreb practicly doesn't exist anymore.I won't talk about hockey outside Zagreb, everything is known about it.

Things are not so good that they look like for the fans(those who started to watch true hockey this season).Something must be done.

You mean second ( mestis ) division! He played last year for RoKi. RoKi was promoted to mestis. Did Badiura stay in Roki or he signed with another third divison club?
    Anyhow, good trade for Maribor!
