Ok, both s-f series are at 3:1 for the higher seeded team now...seems we're heading towards a final between Salzburg and Vienna.

I watched the Black Wings - Capitals game yesterday until the bar switched channels to show soccer around minute 50...went home then and afterwards a friend phoned me rejoycing about the win. I was totally amazed because for the 50mins I saw there was little evidence that the Wings could get the equalizer. The Caps were imho a notch or two better in almost everything and so tieing it and furthemore winning it is a big surprise even though it was just 1:0 to the Caps. In the forums immediately after the game accusations surfaced in which Caps fans suspected their team to have lost deliberately to get (the revenue of) anothe home game in this series. Not too plausible I'd say but on the other hand I'm quite sure that the Caps will end it on Thursday (although I hope otherwise).

So although the Bulls were prettyluckey yesterday to get away with a win my best guess for tomorrow is that both series will be done and the final be Salzburg against Vienna. This matchup we had for the last three years in the semi-finals and the Caps were sweeped every single time...

That Filewich was Medvescak target this past summer, RBS was several days faster in signing him...

    Two intersting games today.

Linz came after losing 4:1 in two periods by winning 6:4.It'll be very interesting in this series now.
In Salzburg another good game, RB won but Medveščak was very good once again. They were very close to extra time but finally didn't manage to equalise.RB scored once in first and once in second period which was enough for fourth and final win in series.

Goalies (Kristan and Leneuve today) were great, just like in all five games.

Now it's time to rest for Medveščak and time to make plans for the next season.

This one was overachievment and they need to be more than proud and satisfied with it.

I'll miss their games and it'll be hard to wait for start of another season.

I have never seen such a strange game in my whole "fan career". Vienna was dominating 30 minutes and lead 4-1. Linz' only home-grown player Michael Mayr, a 3rd line stay-at-home defender scored his second goal of the game to reduce the lead to 4-2. Vienna's Daryl Bootland hit the pipe one minute afterwards but the puck did not find its way into the net. Few minutes later Linz scored 3 shorthanded goals within 4 minutes (1 minute 5 vs.3) to gain the 5-4 lead. Matthias Iberer who was benched the last game and the first 30 minutes of this game extended the lead to 6-4 5 minutes into the third period. Vienna had another 5 on 3 powerplay but Linz was not able to score another shorthander. But as Linz did not allow too many high quality scoring chances in the last 10 minutes this wasn't very tragic.

Vienna is still leading the series 3-2 but the momentum is on Linz' side now and I'm looking forward to the next game on Sunday.

    Highlights of the game:

I think Medvešcak can be very proud of their first season in EBEL despite losing 4-1 against Red Bull Salzburg in the semi finals. Salzburg was the clear favourite to win the championship this year from the beginning but Zagreb was able keep most of the games close against them.

Even with the 4-1 series loss, I have to say that I think Medvescak's performance on the ice, and the way they filled the arena, has to be one of the biggest sensations of this season! Well done, Bears, svaka cast!

For first season this is great !! I am proud of every player, because every of them played for this team with so much passion and heart, just like they were born in Zagreb.

1600 season tickets are sold for next season already, so it is good sign already.

Of course, there will be some changes in roster. President Gojanovic said that first target will be Croats from Can and Usa. Other rumors says that Rodman brohters are close to sign a deal. We will see...

Game #6 between Vienna and Linz coming up today. The Capitals were so far the clearly better team when they were playing somehow close to their potential but some phases of weak performance in game 5 which were efficiently used by the Black Wings and their lucky win in game #4 made this series which seemd to head for a sweep after game #3 a tight affair as well. Pressure is surely high for both teams but the Black Wings by now have achieved more than anyone could expect after the first games and so they can probably be a little bit more relaxed than the Caps.

At first congrats to Linz for great comeback in series against Vienna.

Well, today hockey season in Zagreb is "official" over. Bears players and managment organized consort with fans in Dom športova. They were signing jerseys, shared autographs, photographed with fans. It was great atmosphere and attendance were amazing. On this final "party" came around 2000 people who wanted to thank to all players who left their hearts on ice, and achieve very good result as well, and that is something people and sports fans in Zagreb will always appreciate.

Official fan group of Medveščak, SEKTOR B, awarded Bears players in three categories. Best player - Robert Kristan. Heartiest player - Miroslav Brumerčik. Most promising young player - Mislav Blagus.

    Nice gesture by SEKTOR B

Here you can see some photos from this event.

Two minutes before the end of today's game Vienna was leading 5-4 but Linz got a two minute powerplay. In minute 59 the goalie was pulled and with only 50 seconds to play Patrick Leahy scored the equalizer. One of the Rodman brothers had penalty shot like break away but Linz keeper Alex Westlund made the save. After 3 minutes in OT Gregor Baumgartner had 1 on 0 chance against Viennas goalie Cassivi but was fouled from behind. So the referee awarded Linz with a penalty shot which was converted by Brad Purdie.

After an early 3-0 for Vienna the series is tied 3-3 now and a final decisive game will be played on Tuesday in Vienna.

What an epic comeback form Linz!!!! From 0-3 in the series to 3-3 and that despite that Vienna was the better team whenever they played at their best or close to. But the Wings never gave up, Westlund was there when he was needed the most and they used they reoccurring weak phases Vienna had with an efficiency that couldn't have been any better. Now it all comes down to game 7 tomorrow and despite that you can say and argue almost anything if it comes down to psychology and pressure etc its clear if the Black Wings should lose tomorrow it still will be a positive season with a good ending. If the Capitals should however be eliminated it's gonna be nothing else but a disaster that clould cost coach Gaudet his job which btw is what many, many Capitals supporters hope for.

While our site was unfortunately down Black Wings Linz finished their in Austrian hockey history unparalleled comeback with the fourth straight win Tuesday night in game 7 and beat the Vienna Capitals on the road by 7:5. The game was again a thriller, 3:3 after the first period in which Linz was already up by 2:0. In the middle fram the Wings pulled away to 5:3 lead and added two more unanswered goals in the third to a convincing 7:3 score. Two late goals by MRod for Vienna were no threat for Linz' victory. Black Wings game was again very efficient, disciplined and backed by the league's top netminder who kept the Capitals from scoring many times.

The Wings' reaching the finals was not even expected by the most optimistic fans and even before the series against Vienna was done many observers projected that Salzburg will have an easy life with any of these two teams. Well, up to now that's not true as the Black Wings won the first game in Salzburg yesterday by 3:2. Maybe Salzburg lost the rhythm due to the break they had after ending their semi final series already in game #5 while Linz seems to be in a flow extending their winning streak to 5. Both previously sure home games in Linz were sold out already yesterday and in Upper Austria the media have jumped the Black Wings train and made the team the undisputed #1 sports topic these days which hasn't remotely been the case since the championship season 02/03. Good stuff.

I'll be glad for Linz to win the title. The story of comeback from 0:3 in the semifinals and winning the championship against the favourite is going to be a story of the season. I'd expect for IIHF.com to display the tale of Black Wings.

From this season on the league's MVP as voted by a committee of journalists will recieve the RON KENNEDY trophy in honour of the former coach and player who died last year.
A very worthy name this trophy carries now.

In game second of the series once again it was Salzburg who dominated the game. Linz hardly managed to get the puck out of the own zone but after 17 minutes it was Linz who scored the first goal without generating any big chances. Salzburg continued to outskate the Black Wings and finally scored the tying goal after 12 minutes in the second period. But Linz changed the momentum again only one minute later by scoring the 2-1 and even extended the lead to 3-1 with 2 minutes to play in a powerplay situation. After 46 seconds the 4-1 followed and I guess most of the spectators thought the second victory was already a sure thing but with 2 powerplay goals within 2 minutes the Red Bulls where back in the game. The Black Wings found the right answer and extended the lead with 2 goals. With 7 minutes to play Salzburg got a 4 minute powerplay and added another goal 5 minutes before the end. Goaltender Reinhard Divis was pulled for an extra attacker but neither team scored a goal.

Linz surprisingly leads the series 2-0 but given the dominance of Salzburg the series is still very open.

    Black Wings did it again!!!!

In their first home game of the EBEL finals the Black Wings withstood a frenetic initial rush by the Red Bulls and took the game with a 6:4 final score. Salzburg started like a rocket into the game pushing the Wings deep into their zone displaying speedy and well exceuted rotational play which brought them a couple of chances but was not enough to make the Wings' defensive play crack. The Black Wings defended the slot well and hardly allowed the Bulls to take unobstrcuted shots and it came as it also went in the semis against Vienna they were again very efficient with their chances. Rob Shearer opened the scoring circling around Reinhard Divis' net centering a pass to the crease which bounced off a Salzburg player's skate and went into the net. The first part of the second period was more even with good end to end hockey but slowly Salzburg built up the pressure once more and drove the Wings back into their zone for longer stretches of play. In a scramble in front of Alex Westlund's goal Filewich grabed the puck and wristed it over Westlund to tie the game. Moments later the Bulls killed their momentum when a failed shot by Regier led to an attack by the Wings which Baumgartner finished off from close range after a scramble in the crease. Shortly to the end of the second in another turbulent scene in front of the Bulls goal Grabher-Maier fired a slapshot top corner to make it 3:1 for the hosts. Shearer added one more top corner slaps hot goal only 46 seconds into the 3rd period to send the capacity crowd packed arena into euphoria. But the Bulls wer not beaten yet and 2 goals after 2 consecutive penalties against Linz made the game get on a knife edge again. But the Wings continued to be deadly efficient offensively and Iberer scored the insurance goal after a rush down the Wing when he musceled by the defenseman into the slot and sent the puck between Reinhard Divis legs. Moments later Linz' sole homegrown player defenseman Michael Mayr showed off his career high shape by perfectly timing a long pass to Rob Shearer amidst a failed line change of the Bulls who nicely finished of with a good deke and shot past Divis. On a 2+2 penalty against Buckely Salzburg got one goal closer on a shot past the screened Westlund by Welser but no more goals were scored although Pierre Page pulled Reinhard Divis already on the second of those powerplays. Salzburg played almost the entire remaining 5 minutes with an empty net but again could not break the defensive wall the Wings had built up. In the other end Leahy and Oberkofler both missed the gaping net from almost perfect positions.

It was a thriller of a game, Salzburg similar to Vienna in the semis were pushing Linz hard in their zone over extended periods of play but this was not enough to overcome Linz very strong defensive play plus the best goaltender of the league. Linz perfectly showed how a team with inferior speed has to play against an offense oriented strong skating squad as Salzburg. Disciplined physical workand good positional play by all skaters fended off the Bulls' attacks who in turn were defensively prone to mistakes which gave the Black Wings the chances they needed to win. And in the current shape Linz does need only very few chances to score.

Game #3 coming up in Salzburg on Tuesday and Pierre Page needs to come up with a solution soon...

EDIT: 2 reports on one game, this is better than any Austrian newspaper ;-)

I think "plan" is the word PP would use.

You certainly put more effort in writing your report.

Mine only has APA quality at maximum.

The plan was yesterday, now it's time for solutions and that he will come up with one for Tuesday...that was what I got out of PP's interview after the game (apart from his whining around that the refs do not protect the Bulls speed and skill hockey enough and that the opponents are unfair enough to play defense first etc...). Despite his eccentric behaviour I always thought he's a real pro and expert, just a big gun but now I get to think he's just a spoiled old fool.

    APA sometimes is very ok.

Btw, have you been at the game, even on TV one could feel it was something special. I will probably get tickets for next Tuesday but as it goes that might be obsolete ;-)...and that would be one of the games I'd whish the most to not be able to watch

APA articles are OK most of the time but sometimes they are more or less the game sheet in prose.

I've watched both games live in this series and will travel to Salzburg again tomorrow. Yesterday's atmosphere -perhaps apart from the first period - was very good. But in my opinion game 6 of the semi finals with so many momentum changes was the "most special" game I have ever attended in Linz.

Rex, my friend, I hope the Black Wings bring home a championship for you.

My team won the Stanley Cup for me in 1994, and at the rate they are going, I'll never see another one in my lifetime.

So, I certainly hope you get to see the Black Wings win the EBEL title this year.

I hope so too, buddy! But this series is far from over, Salzburg apparently won pretty clear tonight, so this could still go either way.

Salzburg turned the series around with 3 consecutive wins and now lead 3:2. The last two games both ended 3:2 in favor of the Bulls who contiued to dominate on offense most of the time but still are certainly within the reach of the Wings. Yesterday the Black Wings tied the game at 1 afterwards but Salzburg added 2 more in the second period and were lucky that Linz forwards couldn't convert two lone rushes on LeNeveu and thus fell short one goal in the end.
Tomorrow game 6 is coming up, last of the season in Linz. Bulls are favourites but a home team win and a decisive 7th game is well possible. And I'm in Linz and have my ticket already (Toni auch?). However it's gonna end the Wings have had a good season. Certainly with a deal of good luck but also lots of good spirit, good attitude and good hockey.

Red Bulls Salzburg EBEL and Austrian champions!

What a thriller of a game. Linz took a 2:0 lead in the opening period but imho awful and one sided officiating made the Bulls able to tie it in the second period. The Bulls were the quicker and more skilled team pressuring Linz hard many times and locking them up in their end but the defensive effort, a stellar Westlund and some good luck were enough to let Salzburg get away by one goal only early in the third period. Although the Wings were partly completely worn out they responded and tied it at three not even 2 minutes after Salzburg had taken the lead. The reminder of the regular time plus the first OT period remained scoreless although both teams had a power-play with 4 on 3. The Bulls were denied two times during theirs by the crossbar or the post and the rest of the pmany shots were turned away by league MVP Westlund. Linz also got close to score on some occasions but it was not until the 83rd minute that Doug Lynch after a bad line change by Linz fired a shot low inside the post on breaking into the zone to beat Westlund and give the Bulls their third championship. After a second of silence the crowd in the packed full "No worries" arena (no joke ;-) started to chant the typical "Linzaaa" call again to honor the Wings who have achieved much more than anyone thought.

A fantastic EBEL season is over and although I hwould have loved to see the Black Wings claim the title it is obvious that the best team in the league finally won. Congrats to the Bulls and hopefully their Mr. Plan stops whining around and gives the opponents and the league the respect they deserve.

As I and many others expected RB Salzburg became the new EBEL champion.Even Linz had a 2:0 lead in the final series they just couldn't do more.RB was better and luckier in other games and deserved the win.
Too bad for Linz, they played really good in the finals and were really close to win the series after two starting wins but looks like they run short of strenght in the decisive moments.
They had long and exhaustive semifinal series while RB had easier job with Medveščak.

Congratulations to both teams, they both had good season!

Although I was cheering for Linz in this series, congrats to Salzburg on title. I think one of the reasons why RBS won is what Pršljen said, Linz had very though 1/2 final series, while Salzburg won its series against Bears in five games. Of course, congrats to Linz for VERY good season and to their goalie on MVP award.

Great season behind us. Hope next will be same or even better
