As usual for the tournaments early in the season a complete development roster and in fact the idea to test young players though quite an established tradition in AUT has never been taken so far than Bill Gilligan did with this roster.
If it comes up to test players Gilligan is doing a meticulous job. So meticulous that he doesn't only test young and inexperienced players that are doing well in their teams right now but also young and inexperienced players that have not been impressive at all, only got little ice time in their clubs or have recently been injured.
If it comes up to older players as leaders Jeremy Rebek and especially Philipp Lukas are obvious choices. Rebek has not done anything too special recently and Lukas is in an outright miserable shape.
I don't really get it but I guess it's ok

    Croatian final roster

    GK's:

    Krošelj (Medveščak)
    Krpes (Mladost)
    Tačković (Zagreb)

    DF's:

    Tadić (Mladost)
    Šijan (Medveščak)
    Ljubić (Mladost)
    Novosel (Medveščak)
    Senzel (Medveščak)

    FW's:

    Žibret (Medveščak)
    M. Čunko (Medveščak)
    T. Čunko (Mladost)
    Novak (Mladost)
    Kučera (Mladost)
    Kanaet (Medveščak)
    P. Trstenjak (Slovan, SVK)
    Blagus (Medveščak)
    M. Smerdelj (Mladost)
    Rajsar (Medveščak)
    Lazić (Medveščak)
    Brenčun (Medveščak)
    Z. Lovrenčić (Medveščak)
    Šupih Kvaternik (Medveščak)

    Missing players :

    M. Lovrencic (Fw, Medvescak - EBEL)
    Grozaj (Fw, Mladost/Team Zagreb)
    N.Trstenjak (Df, Medvescak/Team Zagreb)
    Sertić (Df, Medveščak/Team Zagreb)
    Brumerčik (Df, Medvescak - EBEL)
    V.Belic (Gk, Medvescak/Team Zagreb)
    S. Belic (Df, Medvescak/Team Zagreb)
    Jakovac (Fw, Mladost/Team Zagreb)

Only five defencemans and some questionable forward choices is not serious apporach for only EIHC tournament that Croatia will play this season. Since our U20 team won't play any friendly games or tournament in this international break (and that is not something new, since our federation treats young NT's like unwanted child) coach Bregant could invite some best U20 players that doesn't play abroad for this tournament. That would be nice experience for them and it would be somekind of preparation for upcoming U20 Div1 that will be held on Bled.

I can't predict result for this team, but let's say that we will beat Spain, game against Serbia will be equal, win could go to any side, while against Romania I expect slightly defeat.

My prediction from the challenge in Romania

    1. Romania
    2.Croatia
    3.Spain
    4.Serbia

Serbia team are without 3 canadians with serbian passport(Jacob, Furnier, Perouwn- all of them are stop playing hockey) and probably we will go just with players from Partizan( Belgrade), which is not enough for something more than last place. There are a few more players which is good for the national team, but they are not in the team( I suggest)....who knows why... It is impossible to find out the roster of Serbian team for this tournament, it is probably top secret from our National Federation...

    V.Cengeri (Vasas, Hungary)
    D.Filipovic (C.Zvezda)

Very young team going to Romania, some players aren't here like B.Mamic (Ferencvaroc, HUN), R.Sabados (Bled, SLO), Nemanja Jankovic (NCAA), goalie M.Lukovic and our Srb/Can players which played for us on last tournament D1 in Holland (Jacob, Bibic, Perowne, Fournier). It will be interesting to waching SRB team without help from abroad.

    Good luck.

For some unknown reason, Gasper Kroselj didn't travel with team in Brasov. So, we are without our top two goalies (Belic and Kroselj) and that changes things significant as our goaltender duo will be Krpes and Tackovic both young, nothing special(better word would be bad) and inexperienced.

I believe the romanian matches at least are on TV in Romania, so maybe a small chance.

Any info about the Russia B team? Interesting to see how strong team that is.

    Stanislav Nazarov (Tilburg)
    Nick de Jong (Nijmegen)
    Erik Tummers (Geleen)
    Bjorn Willemse (Geleen)
    Jordy van Oorschot (Den Haag)
    Reinier Staats (Eindhoven)
    Mark Tanner (Amsterdam)
Michael Brandasu (Stavanger Oilers - NOR)

    Forwards
    Peter van Biezen (Tilburg)
    Casey Vanschagen (Tilburg)
    Diederick Hagemeijer (Tilburg)
    Bert van den Braak (Heerenveen)
    Sander Dijkstra (Heerenveen)
    Kevin Bruijsten (Nijmegen)
    Raphael Joly (Nijmegen)
    Brad Smulders (Geleen)
    Lars van Sloun (Geleen)
    Marcel Kars (Zoetermeer)
    Terry Harrison (Zoetermeer)
    Ivy van den Heuvel (Eindhoven)
    Levi Houkes (Den Haag)
    Tony Demelinne (Den Haag)
    Ronald Wurm (Den Haag)
    Matt Korthuis (Den Haag)
    Jamie Schaafsma (Gherdeina - ITA2)
For a variety of reasons (most of them due to injury, work or team obligations), the following players declined head coach Tommy Hartogs' invitation:
    G Casper Swart (Zoetermeer)
    D Stanislav Nazarov (Tilburg)
    D Nick de Jong (Nijmegen)
    D Bjorn Willemse (Geleen)
    D Mark Tanner (Amsterdam)
D Mike Dalhuisen (Quinnipiac University - NCAA)
    F Peter van Biezen (Tilburg)
    F Casey Vanschagen (Tilburg)
    F Matt Korthuis (Den Haag)
    F Marcel Bruinsma (Zoetermeer)
    F Bob Teunissen (Eindhoven)
    F Akim Ramoul (Eindhoven)
    F Jan-Jaap Natte (EHC Dortmund - GER3)
F Mitch Bruijsten (University of Alaska-Anchorage - NCAA)
F Steve Mason (Miami University (Ohio) - NCAA)
F Nardo Nagtzaam (Alexandria Blizzard - NAHL)

Therefore, the final roster is as follows:

    Goal
    Ian Meierdres (Tilburg)
    Matt Anthony (Eindhoven)*

*) According to Hartogs, the dutch U20 goalies aren't ready yet for this level. Therefore, as Swart is sidelined due to injury, canadian Matt Anthony (Eindhoven) was approached to back up starting goalie Ian Meierdres.

    Defence
    Erik Tummers (Geleen)
    Jordy van Oorschot (Den Haag)
    Reinier Staats (Eindhoven)
Michael Brandasu (Stavanger Oilers - NOR)
    Dax van de Velden (Nijmegen)
    Max van Lieshout (Eindhoven)

Of these six defencemen, only Tummers, Van Oorschot and Staats have international experience at this level.

    Forwards
    Raphael Joly (Nijmegen)*
    Kevin Bruijsten (Nijmegen)
    Ivy van den Heuvel (Eindhoven)
    Tony Demelinne (Den Haag)
    Ronald Wurm (Den Haag)
    Levi Houkes (Den Haag)
    Lars van Sloun (Geleen)
    Brad Smulders (Geleen)
    Terry Harrison (Zoetermeer)*
    Marcel Kars (Zoetermeer)
    Bert van den Braak (Heerenveen)
    Sander Dijkstra (Heerenveen)
    Diederick Hagemeijer (Tilburg)
    Jamie Schaafsma (Gherdeina - ITA2)

*) Harrison and Joly both have Dutch passports, but are only playing their first season in the Dutch Eredivisie. This would make them eligible for World Championships in 2012. Hartogs wants to see what they can add to the Dutch NT, hence their invitation in spite of their inavailability for the upcoming WC's.

Interesting that the Dutch team is using ineligible players. Far as I'm aware, player eligibility is not just for the World Championships but for any IIHF competition. I wonder if any other teams will contest the inclusion of three ineligible players on the Netherlands squad.

EIHC is not an official IIHF competition

Isn't all international matches under IIHF, even though IIHF themselves might not exactly be arranging the tournament? Think that's what he meant.

Well, I think kerusz is right. We don't know what does "other competitions so designated by IIHF" from statutes & bylaws mean but I don't think it applies to EIHC tournaments. Hungarians were using players which weren't eligible for WC in EIHC before and no-one was questioning this. However for example Poland don't use Slovaks even in ordinary exhibition NT games because our association claims they're ineligible.

IIHF eligibility rules apply on the world championships and the olympics.

EIHC tournaments are exhibition tournaments where you can play with anybody you want.

I'm with Kerusz on this one. I remember an EIHC tournament in Italy where 'Oranje' played with Czech Thomas Kalousek in goal as no other senior goalie was available. No problems there.

Pardon my ignorance, but I take it that these games are basically the hockey equivalent of soccer friendlies?

you are correct. there are just too few international breaks, so coaches must use this games wisely in a way of preperation for world championship. as season ends, theres no time to play many friendlies, test matches, exibition games or whatever you call it

How competitive is it? I've managed to snag some pictures of action off of Yahoo Sports, of all places. Do the lower ranked teams have their best players playing in these games?

everybody is experimenting a bit. some lower countries cant ice best squad for a numerous reasons (injuries, fatigue during the league... work, exams ect.)

example, croatia came to romania with 3rd and 5th choice goalie and only 5 d-mans. up front they also miss some shooting power. in general, croatia probably iced about 2/3 of a squad that will play at world championship.

Good result by Serbian team, only 1-2 with Romania. First goalie was Arsenije Rankovic, his first time in senior squad. There are also very young defenders like Ilic, Lukovic, M.Korac, only Tumbas and G.Ristic is older - all in all, result for respect.

    gk:
    A.Rankovic (C.Zvezda) 1992.

    G.Ristic (Partizan) 1974.
    S.Ilic (Partizan) 1990.
    I.Tumbas (Partizan) 1987.
    A.Lukovic (C.Zvezda) 1992.
    M.Korac (C.Zvezda) 1992.

    Austria Update Team AUT

Goalkeeper Jürgen Penker, defensemen Florian Mühlstein and Stefan Ulmer (the only export in the planned squad) and forwards Patrick Maier and Michael Raffl are out and will be replaced by Bernhard Starkbaum (GK, VSV), Daniel Mitterdorfer (D, RBS), Andreas Wiedergut (D, RBS), Benjamin Petrik (F, VSV), Kevin Moderer (F, G99) and Alexander Feichtner (F, RBS).

The team will feature 7 debutants on senior international level and only 4 players who have made it to a world championship tournament so far and many of the newcomers are safe from ever doing so. What the strategy behind this selection is I don't know. Whatever it is (if there's one at all) I'd say it can't be using this tournament to prepare the team that's going to play in Slovakia. If more than 5 players from this roster make to IHWC I will be really surprised.
I will post the updated roster once it is online, the AUT federation hasn't cared to provide one yet.

It was only the game against Belarus, that was scheduled to be broadcasted by TV2 sport. I would assume that the only way to follow the Denmark - Norway game is by the live ticker.

Because they are participating in the Continental Cup, those players were allowed a break from the national team. However it was probably only 1 or 2 players anyway from the Sønderjyske team that was going to be invited anyway.

I'm guessing the Belarusian production team is only producing the games involving the Belarus team.
