Nobody knows. We're talking about SM-liiga here. With all the penailu going on, we're genre savvy enough not daring to take a stab.

Some can, however, make some educated estimates. Or revert to wild mass guessing, if you're into that sorta thing.

I would say just the usual suspects.

Kärpät, Jokerit, TPS and HIFK (can maybe throw JYP in there as dark horses) But as quite rightly Laho mentions this is the SM-liiga we are talking about, I wouldn't even dare to try guess any league positions.

In most seasons Jokerit have a team on paper that should be up there and challenging, but more often than not seem to dissapoint. This year most certainly seems to be the case as well. Furthermore, with Kekalainen at the helm this time around I am sure that the wheels will not fall of so easily (Jokerit have this habit of laying a massive egg at a crucial point of a season that just undoes them bigtime)

My personal favourites are Oulun Kärpät though. Dunno why just liking the look of their team epsecially the quality of their imports. I think they will posses one of the most potent lines in the entire league in Luomala-Kreps-Kuusela, looking forward to seeing them in action later this year !

Pretty much the usual suspects. Kärpät, Jokerit and HIFK are likely the three most stacked teams on paper. But that they were last year too, and all finished outside the final four. So yeah.

TPS is the reigning champion, but they've lost quite a few of their key players to different leagues. Plus the biggest single factor in their cup run, head coach Kai Suikkanen left to KHL. So perhaps their success falls more into that WMG department. Apart from the three big ones mentioned, I'd say JYP and KalPa don't look bad.

But if we're looking for a real dark horse, I'd say... Pelicans. Watch 'em.

That parallels the 2010-11 budgets, excepting Lukko

That definitely makes for some interesting reading, definitely a few suprises in there. HIFK have a slightly bigger budget this year than Jokerit ?!?! That definitely suprised me, there are always known as the 'big team,' with a great team framework and a massive arena, guess they aren't the biggest team ever anymore.

Can Kärpät's large budget be explain by the fact that they basically use a lot of Airline travel and stay in a lot hotels ? Can imagine they would be needed to work with a large budget due to these factors.

With Lukko I think there large budget is more to do with the ice arena that with player salaries.

Have to say, great job by JYP, KalPa, Pelicans and SaiPa (especially them) the improvement these clubs have made is pleasing to see and is great for the league. All these club have made a good account for themselves when at times they were working with very little. I remember when SaiPa looked finished a few years back, virtually had nothing so to be in the position they are in now (even if it's bottom of the ladder) still warrants kudos.

Some dissapointments being that of Jokerit, Blues, Tappara and Ilves. Tampere is a huge hockey market and its definitely a bit dissapointing at how poor the Tampere teams rank. I expect better from Blues for some reason as well with Espoo being a commercial market and all.
