    Playoffs quaerter-finals Game #1 - 17 february

    For a funny coincidence playoffs quarter-finals pairs are the same of last year...

    Val Pusteria – Alleghe Hockey 4:2 (1:2, 2:0, 1:0)
    1-0 Patrick Bona (Lynn Loyns, Nate DiCasmirro) 02:28
    1-1 Alberto Fontanive (inferioritą numerica) (Peter Sarno, Mac Faulkner) 07:36
    1-2 Vincent Rocco (Daniele Veggiato, Carlo Lorenzi) 10:13
    2-2 Joe Jensen (Joe Cullen, Nate DiCasmirro)PP 32:34
    3-2 Matthew Kelly (Taggart Desmet, Robert Sirianni)PP 39:09
    4-2 Robert Sirianni (Joe Cullen, Matthew Kelly)EN 59:22
    PIM: 10x2 - 13x2 SOG: 42-23 Att: 1.327
    Val Pusteria: Stromberg;Glira, Helfer, Hofer, Kelly, Mair, Persson, Willeit;Bona, Crepaz, Cullen, Desmet, DiCasmirro, Erlacher, Jensen, Loyns, Oberrauch, Pichler, Sirianni, Tauber;
    Alleghe: Dennis;Bowman, De Biasio, De Val, Ganz, Kovacevic, Lorenzi, Marsh, Scoville;Anger, Da Tos, De Toni M., Faulkner, Fontanive A., Fontanive F, Monferone, Rocco, Sarno, Tormen, Veggiato;
    Series: 1-0
    Val Pusteria won regular season for the first time in its history and has the chance to play post season always with home advantage. Brunico team won the last 14 consecutive games vs Alleghe but Steve Mckenna guys had a very positive final of reg. season, after the sign of american Peter Sarno. He, top scorer Mac Faulkner and goalie Adam Dennis are the hope for Alleghe, but frankly team has to realize a kind of feat

    Hc Bolzano Foxes – Ice Hockey Aquile FVG Pontebba 4:3 (1:0, 1:1, 2:2)
    1-0 Mike Souza (Colton Fretter, Alexander Egger)PP2 18:09

    4-3 Shane Endicott (Luca Felicetti) 50:12
    PIM: 11x2 - 8x2 SOG: 24-36 Att: 600
    Bolzano: Zaba;Busto, Ceresa, Egger, Lehtinen, Ruggeri, Suhonen;Bernard, Dorigatti,Fretter, Insam, Irmen, Mazzolini, Scandella, Souza, Walcher, Zisser;
    Pontebba: Hočevar;Ambrosi, Dufresne, Lutz, Marchetti, Nicoletti, Tav˛elj;Ciresa, Endicott, Felicetti, Guerin, Lavrentiev, Monych, Nicolao, Pittis, Piva, Rigoni, Rizzo, Stampfer;
    Series: 1-0
    Last year this series was the most thrilling with Bolzano won game #7 after being loosing 1-3 and also this year series is promising. Bolzano suffers the important loss of Cristiano Borgatello out for rest of season due to injury

    Renon – Hc Valpellice 4:2 (0:0, 2:1, 2:1)
    1-0 Kimmo Pikkarainen (Kevin Baker, Sami Ryhanen) 24:44
    1-1 Anthony Aquino (Trevor Johnson, Alex Nikiforuk)PP 30:42
    2-1 Kevin Baker (Sami Ryhanen, Kimmo Pikkarainen)PP 39:57

    PIM: 14x2+1x25(Rottensteiner) - 13x2+1x25(A.Aquino) SOG: 44-42 Att: 734
    Renon: Cloutier;Bregenzer, Buckey, Gruber, Hafner, Korhonen, Pikkarainen, Ploner F., Ploner K.;Ansoldi, Baker, Daccordo, Fauster, Ramoser, Rasom, Ryhanen, Rottensteiner, Scelfo, Spinell, Tudin, Watson;
    Valpellice: Regan;Ganzak, Johnson, Martinelli, Rivoira L, Runer, Saviels, Trevisani;Aquino A., Aquino L., Canale, Frigo, Iannone, McDonough, Nikiforuk, Pozzi, Silva;
    Series: 1-0
    Renon lost two positions in the standing in the last round but quarter final vs Valpellice is not dso bad for Collalbo team. Bulldogs are in deep crisis and secured a spot in post season thanks to a brilliant first part of season. December and january were horrible for Valpellice and management decided to fire coach Martinelli without many positive consequences. More: Renon won 15 out of 16 games played with Valpellice

    Asiago – SHC Fassa 4:1 (2:0, 2:0, 0:1)
    1-0 Layne Ulmer (John Vigilante, Adam Henrich) 15:13
    2-0 Michael Henrich (Matteo Tessari, David Borrelli) 16:52
    3-0 Adam Henrich (John Vigilante, Matthew De Marchi) 38:27

    Series: 1-0
    Defending champion Asiago redressed season in last two months (in december team stagnated at 4th-5th place of standing) and start to defend title as runner up in season. Fassa had a quite complicate season and lost Andergassen and Giudice probably for rest of playoffs, an hard task for Frycer team

    Series: 1-1
    With a great crowd as usual, Valpellice manage to equalize the series despite the absence of Anthony Aquino, suspended, and the injury of Agris Saviels after second period. Problem for Valpellice is very short roster and difference of performances between home and away games. After the game Valpellice announced sign of former Appiano Pirates coach Mike Ellis tas assistant coach

    Ice Hockey Aquile FVG Pontebba - Hc Bolzano 1:2 (1:1, 0:1, 0:0)
    1-0 Michele Ciresa (Patrick Rizzo, Luca Rigoni) 13:00

    Series: 0-2
    Great performance by both goalie, but Bolzano capitalized a decisive power play at begin of second period. Debut for Marek Chvatalk (out Tavzelj) in Pontebba roster

    SHC Fassa - Asiago 2:5 (1:3, 1:1, 0:1)
    1-0 Diego Iori (Stefano Margoni, Rudi Locatin)PP 00:51

    Series: 0-2
    Fassa, again without key player Gerome Giudice, resisted about 20 minutes vs stronger Asiago but with score on 2-3 Fassa didn't capitalized 2 power play and was punished by Tessari on following Asiago advantage situation. A fight between Intranuovo and Wilford take away from next game another important player for Fassa

    Alleghe - Val Pusteria Wolves 2-3 (0-0,0-3,2-0)
    0-1 Robert Sirianni (Matthew Kelly) 21:16
    0-2 Robert Sirianni (Taggart Desmet, Max Oberrauch) 24:49
    0-3 Robert Sirianni (Taggart Desmet, Armin Helfer) 33:52
    1-3 Niklas Anger (Peter Sarno, Darrel Scoville)PP 52:16

    Series: 0-2
    In the name of top scorer Robert Sirianni, one period is enough for Val Pusteria to close game 2 and take tha advantage in the series. Another good performance by Adam Dennis and Peter Sarno for Alleghe, but frankly seems really tough for McKenna team to re-open the series

    Game over for Pontebba, the supposted more balanced pair ended easily in 4 games for Bolzano. Very anonimous season for Pontebba...

    The miracle continues: Valpellice can enlarged a bit its thin roster (Ganzak is back from injury but Saviels is out) after elimination of farm team Real Torino in Serie A2. Best Real player David Stricker left his footprint on this game along with Anthony Aquino. Now Renon can't make further mistakes

    Fassa wasted a great chance to equalize serie: Marty Wilford - back after suspension and Smyth seems to close the game after 2nd period but an horrible last 20 minutes by home team give Asiago the chance to close serie next saturday

    Incredible!! With a small roster and a coach fired last month Valpellice advances to semifinals for the first ever time in its history knocking out super favourite Renon, finalist in last 3 consecutive seasons. A stellar performance by goalie Regan and a fight spirit by Iannone and Aquino twin made a miracle. more then 500 fans followed team in Collalbo from Torre Pellice. Now Bulldogs will face another favourite, regular season winner Val Pusteria

    What happened to Sirianni? I was able to watch his college playing days at Bemidji State in Minnesota and have been following him as well as I can over on this side of the pond.

    he broken a lumbar vertebra during quarter finals game 5 vs Asiago and will be out for at least 3 months. Tough loss for Val Pusteria but team this season seems able to capture its first title

    Asiago did the miracle! Great performance from champion, they recovered from a desperate situation equalizing the series. Saturday decisive game, but in Asiago. Bolzano will be without defender Suhonen (Borgatello is out for rest of season), injured in game 5, while Asiago continues with absence of Matteo Tessari and Mirko Presti and precarious condition of Borrelli, but will be a great match

    The Südtirol dream final is vaning...wouldn't bet too much on the Foxes anymore. One of my teammates in Vienna played for Bruneck until he quit last year, he said that everyone in the valley was absolutely excited to go as favourites in a final against the well "hated" big club from the capital city. But still getting a (very good) shot at the title is great for the wolves.

    And finally Asiago completes a great comeback knocking out Bolzano and advancing to finals as title holder. But Foxes, despite score, try to win the game (see SOG). For the health of Italian hockey finals won't be a South Tyrol affair...
    Very difficult to make a forecast. For what seen in regular season Val Pusteria is favourite (Wolves can play eventual last game at home) but Asiago is an expert team and during playoffs performances and chemestry between the lines - despite tough loss of promising Matteo Tessari - grew up. Bolzano closed another season without titles, uncommon habit for Foxes

    Historic first ever final for Val Pusteria began positively: without capitain Thomas Pichler and top scorer Sirianni, both injured, home team managed to equalize opening De Marchi goal (De Marchi took a game penalty during 2nd period and will be out from game 2, tough loss for Asiago) and overturns game in second period despite a brilliant game by Asiago goalie Daniel Bellissimo. Next thursday game 2 in Asiago

    Asiago is still alive! Maybe Val Pusteria will win title but surely has to toil for it. in front of a sold out arena, Asiago showed a great iron will, coming back from 2-0 and 3-1 with a great performance by Michael Henrich and goalie Daniel Bellissimo. The come back in shape of captain Dave Borrelli has a positive influence on Asiago, now with chance to equalize series at home on tuesday

    Raisport broadcasts every game live, so probably some streaming site has links

    Asiago tied series with a great game, won in first two perfect played periods. Again the Henrich brothers and goalie Bellissimo were the stars of team. On thursday a key game in Brunico. First goal in final series for very promising 17 years old Alex Frei

    With an amazing first period Val Pusteria annihilated Asiago and get the first match point. Probably Asiago is tired after 7 games with Bolzano and two tauts game to recover initial 0-2 gap

    I was pretty sure that with the unfortunate series of injuries Pustertal wouldn't win another game after Asiago had tied the series. But the Wolves bounced back impressively even without Taggart Desmet (broken collarbone in game #4) and also losing Matt Kelly during game #5.
    The club had also set up a huge video screen in Brunck to get the many people who couldn't get tickets to the games a chance to catch some close to live atmosphere. But the party is probably heading for an unfortunate turn: Asiago has apparently submitted a protest against the game because Pustertal had two foreign goalkeepers on the game sheet whereas the league regulations require at least one netminder to be trained domestically....quite ironic if one takes into account how Asiago's roster is composed. But rules are rules and HCP can only blame themselves should they lose this win.

    AS Rex anticipated, unexpected coup de théātre after last game and apparently childish mistake by Val Pusteria: they alligned 2 foreign goalies (Stromberg and Nikkila), against the rules, even if Val Pusteria claimed they reserved a place in roster for third goalie Hopfgartner (italian), but he doesn't appear on official gamesheet. But apparently the rule reads a team must have 11 italian players + 1 goalie in the roster BUT this doesn't mean the goalie have to be dressed (Val Pusteria thesis)... A big mess and tomorrow Asiago could win title....

    Asiago is my favorite Italian club, and the Wolves are #2 for me (Vipiteno is #3, but anyway....), so I'm pulling for Asiago.

    However, this rule is absurd, and the Val Pusteria win in game #5 should stand. And if they insist on having the rule, there's got to be a more equitable penalty than forfeiting a game that was already played.

    I'm sure Asiago and the referees knew damn well that there wasn't an Italian goalie on the gamesheet before they dropped the opening faceoff.....why not simply say something, and force them to dress the Italian goalie as the backup? Or why not fine the club a certain amount of money for the infraction?

    This seems like nothing other than sour grapes by Asiago........and any championship they win now will be stained, and probably mentally marked with an asterisk by any fair-minded Italian hockey fan. "Yeah, Asiago won in 2010-2011, but they had to whine like a bunch of little girls to win, since they couldn't do it on the ice....."

    This makes Serie A look like a bush league, and it's wrong.

    If I were the Wolves' General Manager, I'd tell Serie A to either reinstate the result, or I would do two things - first, I'd tell Asiago to take what would be a worthless trophy, since I'd refuse to allow my team to take part in any more games; second, I'd pull out of Serie A and look to join EBEL or another league.

    that's Italian hockey....
    Ok, the rule might be absurd, but it's rule...For me is really incredible how Val Pusteria can have made this mistake....they alligned Hopfgartner in every other game, why change now? and how is possible no-one in the staff corrected the mistake.....really a lack of professionalism. I hope Val Pusteria will win tomorrow in Asiago (not easy, they lost Matt Kelly, injured and also Di Casimirro is uncertain) and will play a regular 7th game in Brunico, for the credibility of hockey

    The real problem is that the rule is very fuzzy formulated as I understood it from the German language source I follow on the issue. Given that the rule is not clearly formulated the ruling of the league is completely wrong. You can't pull out the basically harshest sanction there is given this ambiguity that just smells awfully like a case of favouritism of the governing body towards Asiago.
    On the German speaking forum of the sonice.it website (my source of information) which is very much Pustertal oriented there is also the suspicion that Asiago knew about HCP's mistake beforehand and thus simply slacked off in the game leading to this lopsided score for the Wolves. Without having any proof of that beyond the story just fits the picture so well, if that was true it is a big disgarce on part of Asiago. If they knew beforehand on seeing the game sheet they could have showed real sportmanship by telling the lupi team manager...
    But as far as I got it there is a protest of HCP against the ruling which has yet to be processed. Maybe they get around this thing, tidy up the rules, probably give HCP a fine (at least they are to blame as well) and let the thing be decided on the ice.

    If not and Pustertal considered joining EBEL, just as a sidenote: EBEL has a brilliant reputation of treating "guest teams" 100% equally ;-)

    Playoffs final - Game #6 - 02 april

    Asiago - Val Pusteria Wolves 4-3ot 4:3 d.t.s. (0:0, 1:3, 2:0, 0:0, 1:0)
    0-1 Max Oberrauch (Joe Cullen, Nate DiCasmirro) 22:03
    1-1 Enrico Miglioranzi (Michael Henrich, Raffaele Intranuovo) 22:27
    1-2 Joe Cullen 26:58
    1-3 Joe Jensen PS 36:52
    2-3 John Vigilante (Adam Henrich, Layne Ulmer) 45:26
    3-3 Layne Ulmer (Adam Henrich, John Vigilante) 58:31
    4-3 Raffaele Intranuovo (Michele Strazzabosco, John Vigilante) 91:06
    PIM: 6x2 - 6x2 SOG: 29-37 Att: 2.700 (sold out)
    Series: 4-2 Asiago is Italian champion for 2010-11

    After a marathon Raffaele Intranuovo - tapping-in a rebound on Strazzabosco shot - gives Asiago its third title, second consecutive. Was a great game and really Val Pusteria, despite absences of Desmet, Pichler, Kelly ans Sirianni, tries to equalize series after the terrible mistake in game #5, lost by forfeit. This morning Federation confirmed 5-0 for Asiago. Pity for this conclusion, but was a great final series. Val Pusteria seemed clearly favourite after dominating regular season and lost a capital chance to win first ever title. Absence of top scorer Robert Sirianni, injured in quarter finals, was decisive. Future isn't bright for Brunico team, seems there are many economic troubles, will be a tough summer for Wolves.
    Congratulation to Asiago! They didn't started as favourite, despite last season title, and passed regular season always far from top, firing coach Harrington in january. Fan favourite John Tucker, replacing Harrington, did a great motivation job and Asiago emerged in the final and in playoffs, showing great character in semifinal series vs Bolzano (recovering from 1-3) and in these finals against a super favourite Val Pusteria, quickly on 2-0 in the series.
    League this season showed a good level of games and the very positive surprise of Valpellice but as usual which kind of league fans will see in september is a mystery: probably with addition of Vipiteno, but some teams (Cortina and Val Pusteria) haven't a stable financial situation..

    Are the fans in Italy looking at this as a tainted championship for Asiago?

    I certainly am.
